[0:00] Hey, it's Sam Oh and welcome to the second module which is about on-page SEO. [0:04] If you haven't seen the introduction to SEO video and the module on keyword research, [0:09] then I highly recommend watching those first. [0:11] They'll help you get the foundational knowledge you'll need to get the most out of this module. [0:16] I'll leave links in the description. [0:18] Alright, so what is on-page SEO? [0:20] It's simply the practice of optimizing web pages to rank higher in search engines. [0:25] And it revolves heavily around optimizing pages for search intent. [0:30] But on-page optimizations also involve creating and optimizing HTML tags like titles [0:36] and meta descriptions. [0:38] Now, if you've been exposed to the practice of on-page SEO, then it's quite likely that [0:43] you've heard conflicting advice. [0:45] And for that reason, we're going to discuss both what on-page SEO is and what it is not. [0:51] Let's talk about common advice you might see on on-page SEO best practices which just aren't [0:57] true today. [0:58] And while there are many old-school tactics that are still being recommended, I want to [1:03] focus on just 3 points to help you navigate the noise. [1:07] #1. On-page SEO is not about stuffing exact match keywords. [1:13] It used to be common practice to include the exact keyword you wanted to rank for in your [1:18] title, URL, and content. [1:20] For example, if you wanted to rank for "Car dealer San Diego" you would stuff that keyword [1:25] throughout your page despite the fact it doesn't make sense - grammatically speaking. [1:31] Google is smart enough to understand things like connecting words, synonyms, and closely [1:35] related words and phrases. [1:38] In fact, for all of these queries, the top 10 pages are nearly identical. [1:44] Unfortunately, stuffing exact match keywords is still being practiced today which can lead [1:49] to poor user experience and poor readability; all things that on-page SEO should not do. [1:57] The second thing is that on-page SEO is not about using your keyword a specific number [2:02] of times on the page. [2:04] In our study of 3 million search queries, we found that on average, the top-ranking [2:08] page ranks for around 1,000 other relevant keywords in the top 10. [2:14] Now, can you imagine what it would be like if a top-ranking page had to mention all 1,000 [2:19] of those keywords at least three times? [2:22] It makes no sense. [2:24] The content would be unnecessarily lengthy and create an awful user experience for visitors. [2:29] Here's an example. [2:31] Look at the SERP for the query "diet plan." [2:33] You'll see that Healthline's article on "how to lose weight" ranks #1. [2:38] And there's no mention of a "diet plan" in their title or URL. [2:41] In fact, there's only one fleeting mention of it on the page. [2:45] Not even a subheading. [2:46] Here's another example: [2:48] GQ ranks in the top spot for "classiest watch." [2:51] But if we look at the page, you'll see that the word "classiest" isn't there. [2:56] And neither is the word "classy." [2:59] The third point is that on-page SEO isn't about meeting a minimum word count. [3:04] Some studies have shown that the average content length of the top 10 results is over [3:09] 2,000 words. [3:10] As a result, many SEOs have recommended that you create pages that are at least that length. [3:16] But that isn't exactly sound advice. [3:19] For example, our backlink checker is 628 words, yet we rank #1 for our target keyword and [3:25] the page generates around 130,000 monthly visits from Google search alone. [3:32] Here's another example. [3:33] This page only has 76 words on it. [3:36] The majority of content are images. [3:38] According to Ahrefs Site Explorer, the page gets over 170,000 monthly search visits. [3:45] Now, let's talk about what on-page SEO is today in 2021 and beyond. [3:49] Looking at the definition again, on-page SEO is the practice of optimizing web pages to [3:55] rank higher in search engines. [3:57] And as I mentioned, this revolves heavily around optimizing pages for search intent. [4:02] The keyword here is "search intent." [4:05] Translation: the goal of your pages should be to satisfy the searcher's intent. [4:10] How? [4:11] Well, we talked about the 3 C's of search intent which should help you get the basic [4:15] stuff down like the content type, format, and angle. [4:19] In addition to this, your content needs to address the things people expect to see. [4:24] You'll also want to nail the more "tangible" items like titles, subheadings, internal linking, [4:30] readability, and of course, the actual content itself. [4:34] These are the things we'll be answering in part 2 of our on-page SEO module, where we'll [4:39] get more tactical and talk about how you can create content that's optimized for search. [4:44] This video is set to release in a couple of days, so be sure to subscribe so you don't [4:49] miss out on that. [4:50] Or if you're watching at a later time, check the description in this video where we have [4:54] links to all of the lessons in this SEO course. [4:57] I'll see you in the next lesson.
