[0:00] Today, you're going to learn what backlinks are, why they're important, how you can check them for free, [0:05] and how to get more backlinks to your site. [0:07] Let's get started. [0:09] So what are backlinks? [0:11] Backlinks are links from a page on one website to another. [0:14] From the receiving end, these are often referred to as incoming links or inbound links. [0:19] And from the linking side, they're called external, outgoing or outbound links. [0:24] Take your pick. [0:25] And there are three reasons why they're important. [0:27] First, it's a factor that helps Google and other search engines determine which pages [0:31] should rank the highest for a given query. [0:34] Second, links to your website can send you more visitors through referral traffic. [0:39] And third, backlinks can help search engines discover your pages faster. [0:43] Now, the easiest way to conceptualize backlinks are to think of them as votes. [0:48] When a page receives a backlink, it's essentially another website vouching for the content on the page. [0:53] And the more "votes" you get from credible sources, the higher the trust. [0:58] But not all backlinks are created equal. [1:00] At a basic level, there are two things that separate "good quality backlinks" [1:04] from the not so great ones. [1:05] First is topical relevance. [1:07] Google talks about this in their "reasonable surfer" model which explains how the likeliness [1:12] of a link being clicked relates to its importance. [1:15] So let's say that you have a web page on "How to make slime." [1:18] If you were to label this topic with a category, it would likely fall under DIY, crafts, [1:23] or perhaps something for kids. [1:25] Now, assuming this page had two backlinks, [1:28] one from a tech blog and another from a kid's activity blog, the latter would hold more weight [1:33] since there's higher topical relevance from the page and domain. [1:37] Second is authority. [1:38] Now, when I'm talking about "authority," I'm referring to the quality and quantity of backlinks [1:42] from the referring websites and pages. [1:45] Google places a score on this called "PageRank." [1:47] But since these numbers aren't publicly available, third party tools like ours use our own proprietary [1:53] metrics like Domain Rating, which represents the overall strength of a website's link popularity, [1:58] and URL rating, which represents the overall strength of a page's link popularity. [2:03] To put this into perspective, let's say your slime article got a link from the Huffington Post. [2:08] This website is highly authoritative with a DR of 92. [2:12] And let's say it got another link from a lesser known site like KidsKingdom.ca, which has a DR of 17. [2:20] Based on the definition of Domain Rating, it's fair to say that the Huffington Post [2:24] is a more "authoritative" domain. [2:26] And assuming topical relevance and everything else were equal, a link from Huff Post would [2:31] hold more weight than the other one. [2:33] But let's throw a little twist in here. [2:34] Let's say that the page from the DR 17 site linking to you had collected hundreds of links [2:39] from reputable sources, while the article from Huffington Post had only collected a few [2:44] or maybe even zero backlinks. [2:46] Then the page-level authority of the KidsKingdom page measured by Ahrefs' URL rating score, [2:52] would likely be higher, potentially giving it an edge over the Huffington Post link. [2:56] So as you're looking to get backlinks, you'd ideally want to get them from both topically relevant [3:01] and authoritative pages to reap maximum benefits. [3:05] So how can you check backlinks to your own site? [3:08] There are two places you can do this for free. [3:10] The first is Google Search Console [3:12] If you haven't already set up an account, just go through the verification process [3:16] to prove that you own the site. [3:18] Then go to the Links report. [3:20] Here, you can see your pages that have gotten the most links, [3:23] the websites that have linked to your site the most, [3:25] as well as the link texts that are most frequently used, also known as anchor text. [3:30] To see the actual web pages linking to you, click on the More button here. [3:35] Then click on a page you want to investigate, so I'll click on our post on free keyword research tools. [3:41] You can then click on any of the linking websites to see the exact pages where they're linking from. [3:47] The second way is to use Ahrefs' Free Backlink Checker. [3:50] Just enter the URL or domain that you want to examine and you'll be able to see the top [3:54] 100 backlinks pointing at your target. [3:56] And if you want the full backlink profile, you can use our tool, Ahrefs' Site Explorer, [4:01] export the results or play around with the filters to narrow in on data you want to see. [4:06] Now, looking at your own backlinks can only do so much. [4:09] But you can also use Ahrefs' Backlink Checker or Site Explorer to get actionable insights [4:14] on your competitors. [4:16] Just enter the URL or domain of a competitor, go to the Backlinks report, and you can see [4:21] where their backlinks come from, allowing you to get an understanding of how they get backlinks. [4:26] This brings us to the final part: how do you get backlinks? [4:30] There are three methods to getting backlinks. [4:32] These are to earn them, create them, and build them. [4:35] Earning links refers to natural organic growth. [4:38] This is when people discover your pages through any medium like Google search, social media, [4:43] or word of mouth, and choose to link to your page. [4:46] Creating backlinks is when you add a link on another website that points to your site. [4:51] This might be through forums, directories, blog comments, or some other method. [4:56] Finally are building links. [4:57] And this is usually done through strategies collectively known as link building. [5:02] You can build links by reaching out to other site owners, editors, or webmasters and ask [5:06] them to link to your page. [5:08] As a general rule of thumb, the easier it is to get a link, the less valuable it will be. [5:13] And when you're new to SEO, you'll want to focus on link building to really get traction for your site. [5:18] Since people search for something and often read the number one result, that results in [5:22] some of them linking to that page from their own website. [5:25] And because of the new links, that first-ranking page often stays at the top, creating something [5:30] we call, "the vicious circle of SEO." [5:33] Now, we have a bunch of step-by-step tutorials on various link building tactics, so I strongly [5:38] recommend watching them now. [5:40] And if you have any questions, leave one below in the comments. [5:43] I'll see you in the next tutorial.
