[0:00] I’ll be honest with you. [0:01] It’s often easy for established sites to build backlinks without much effort. [0:05] In fact, we haven’t done outreach for links in a while, yet our link profile continues [0:10] to grow at a steady pace. [0:12] Now, I’d love to say that it’s all because of high-quality content, but the truth is [0:16] that our brand has built an audience, credibility, and trust over time. [0:21] But what if you have a brand new website or if people don’t really know who you are in your industry? [0:25] Well, today I’m going to show you how to build backlinks [0:27] to a brand new website in a systematized way. [0:30] Stay tuned. [0:31] [music] [0:35] What’s up SEOs? [0:36] Sam Oh here with Ahrefs, the SEO tool that helps you grow your search traffic, [0:40] research your competitors and dominate your niche. [0:43] Today, I want to talk about which links you should focus on creating first and how to [0:47] progressively get better links as you build your brand and credibility. [0:51] Let’s get to it. [0:52] So assuming you’re starting with zero links pointing at your site, [0:55] the first thing I’d focus on is building links to your home page. [0:59] There are 3 strategies that I find work really well. [1:02] The first method is to build citations and create social media accounts to boost trust signals. [1:07] Citations are online mentions of your business and they’re most commonly used in local SEO. [1:12] So if you’re a local business, you’d basically find business directories and add your business name, [1:17] address, and phone number, which are collectively known as NAP. [1:21] In a 2018 study by Moz, they found that citation signals help websites rank [1:26] in both the map pack and organic search. [1:29] And these are usually nofollowed links, [1:30] so the purpose of these links isn’t to building website or page level authority. [1:35] But it’s to somewhat legitimize that you do have a real business. [1:39] A great way to find these opportunities is to search in Google for something like [1:43] “your city” and “your job.” [1:45] From here, copy down a few domains from local competitors, ignoring anything like directories. [1:51] Next, we’re going to use Ahrefs’ Link Intersect tool, which will show you who’s [1:55] linking to one or more of your target URLs. [1:58] So I’m just pasting the homepage URLs of my plumbing competitors here. [2:02] And as a final step, I’ll set the mode to URL since we want to see who’s linked [2:06] to just their homepages since that’s where the link will generally point to. [2:11] Let’s run the search. [2:13] Generally speaking, the more intersections there are from the referring domain, the higher [2:17] the probability of it being a place to create a citation. [2:21] To analyze the link, click on the number, and then click on the link. [2:25] And as you can see, the company’s name, address, phone number, [2:29] and a link to their website are all there. [2:31] So I’d go and add my site to this directory too. [2:34] Now, whether your website targets visitors locally or globally, it’s also worth creating [2:39] social accounts with a link back to your site. [2:42] But don’t bother signing up for every network out there. [2:44] Instead, focus on the primary ones in your niche whether that be Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, [2:50] Pinterest and/or LinkedIn. [2:52] Even if you don’t plan to use the social network immediately, it might be worth creating the account [2:57] so you can also claim your business name. [2:59] The second thing you’ll want to do is build authority links to your homepage. [3:03] To do this, I like using Help a Reporter Out, also known as HARO. [3:08] HARO is a company that connects journalists to sources and sources to journalists. [3:12] Just sign up for an account as a “source,” and you’ll get emails with a list of queries [3:17] from journalists at various publications. [3:20] And these aren’t just your run of the mill publications. [3:23] There are journalists from places like Forbes, The New York Times, Huffington Post and more. [3:29] Responding to queries quickly and concisely can land you mentions and links to both your [3:33] homepage and/or social profiles. [3:37] A few places I’ve been featured because of HARO are Inc Magazine, Reader’s Digest, [3:41] and CIO to name a few. [3:43] This, in my opinion, is the easiest place to get authority links that can boost trust and rankings, [3:48] especially since you’ll be judged on your knowledge more than your current online visibility. [3:54] The third place that I think is absolutely awesome for homepage links are Podcasts. [3:58] Podcasts are hot and there are a ton of them in almost every industry. [4:03] Best of all, podcasters are always on the lookout for interesting guests [4:07] that can provide value to their audience. [4:09] And for almost every podcast I’ve seen, they’ll provide a link to the guest’s homepage [4:14] as well as other resources that come up throughout the interview. [4:17] To find podcast opportunities, just search in Google for something like “[your niche] podcasts.” [4:24] And the results should almost always be list posts with popular podcasts in your industry. [4:29] So let’s go to this awesome page on the 12 best SEO podcasts. [4:34] Scrolling down, you’ll see podcasts like Authority Hacker and Search Engine Nerds. [4:38] So let’s click through to one. [4:40] And as you can see, they’re featuring numerous guests in the SEO space, [4:44] so this might be a good podcast to pitch. [4:46] To expand your list even further, go to one of the podcast episodes. [4:51] Scrolling down, you’ll see links to her websites like express writers and content hacker. [4:56] So I’ll copy one of the domains and put into Ahrefs’ Site Explorer. [5:00] And since we know that podcasts generally link to homepages, [5:03] I’ll set the search to URL mode and run the search. [5:07] Next, I’ll go to the backlinks report, where we can see all pages linking to the homepage. [5:12] To filter our results, I’ll type “podcast,” in the include search box. [5:16] Then I’ll set the search filters to only look for that word in the titles and URLs of the referring pages. [5:22] And it looks like I could contact other sites like ProBlogger, CoSchedule, and Shane Barker, [5:28] to potentially be a guest on their shows. [5:30] Not only are podcasts a great source for links, [5:33] but they continue to send us new customers every month. [5:37] Doing these three activities are a great way to build high quality homepage links [5:41] as well as to boost trust signals. [5:43] Now, let’s move onto some page-level link building strategies because links to your homepage alone [5:48] won’t be enough to build sustainable and growing traffic. [5:51] One of my favorite strategies is resource page link building. [5:55] This is where you get backlinks from web pages that curate and link out to useful industry resources. [6:00] And the sole purpose of their existence is to link out to other relevant pages, [6:05] making them easy links to get. [6:07] Now, what I love about this strategy is that you can branch out to pages on broader topics. [6:12] So let’s say you had a blog post on crossfit exercises. [6:16] With a lot of link building tactics, you’d probably have to find a page where they mention something [6:20] super-relevant, like crossfit. [6:23] But with resource page link building, you can try and get links on pages that cover [6:27] broader topics like fitness, weight loss, and exercise. [6:32] So just go to Google and search for something like [6:35] inurl:resources.html intitle:fitness [6:40] Now, just visit the pages, make sure they’re actually resource pages and link out to external resources, [6:46] and pitch your content appropriately. [6:49] Now, rather than rehashing what I’ve already said, I highly recommend watching our video [6:53] on resource page link building where you’ll learn how to execute this step-by-step. [6:58] Another link building strategy that I highly recommend is the Skyscraper Technique. [7:02] This strategy is simple. [7:03] You find a page that has a lot of links, improve on that topic, and then reach out to those [7:08] that are linking to the original page and ask them to link to you. [7:12] A great way to find Skyscraper opportunities is to use Ahrefs’ Content Explorer, [7:16] which is a searchable database with over a billion pages of content complete with social and SEO metrics. [7:23] So let’s say that I want to create a post on Instagram marketing. [7:26] I’ll type that in the search bar and I’ll also change the search mode to a Title search. [7:32] Now, a requirement of the Skyscraper Technique is to find pages that have a lot of links. [7:37] So let’s set a filter to show only pages that have at least 50 referring domains. [7:42] And you’ll see that these articles have gained a ton of links, [7:45] and you can look at the content to see if you can improve on. [7:48] After you’ve created your superior page, click on Details, then click Backlinks, [7:54] and reach out to the linking pages to try and get your resource mentioned. [7:57] Now, this is just a very low-level view of how you can find and execute Skyscraper styled link building, [8:04] so I highly recommend watching our full tutorial on doing it at scale. [8:08] And even though I showed you in somewhat of a sequential order [8:11] of how I think backlinks ought to be built, [8:13] it doesn’t mean that you can’t do Skyscraper outreach while doing things like HARO or Podcasts. [8:18] But I do want to encourage you to build somewhat of a balanced link profile [8:22] where things like your homepage shouldn’t be ignored. [8:25] So I hope this tutorial was helpful and if you enjoyed it, make sure to like, share [8:29] and subscribe for more actionable SEO and marketing tutorials. [8:33] And again, I highly recommend watching some of our link building tutorials so that you can [8:38] execute these strategies with ease. [8:40] So keep grinding away and I’ll see you in the next tutorial.
