[0:00] You might think that Google hates AI content because they have an entire section on it in [0:04] their spam policies. [0:05] But the keyword here that often gets missed is "spammy". [0:08] In fact, I think they love AI content when it's used in a very specific way. [0:14] I'm going to prove it by ranking #1 in Google, surpassing some of the biggest [0:18] sites in the world using just AI content. [0:20] In fact, I'm going to do it in less than an hour starting... now. [0:26] Alright, so the way we're going to rank #1 is to go after a keyword where there's a Featured Snippet. [0:30] And the only real thing you need to qualify for a snippet is to rank in the top 10 for that keyword. [0:37] So let's go and find those keywords. [0:38] I logged into my free Ahrefs' Webmaster Tools account, went to the Organic Keywords Report [0:43] and set a couple filters to find featured snippet opportunities. [0:47] And after a minute of work, I had over 7,000 keywords to choose from. [0:52] Okay, so my game plan is to Google some of these keywords and choose one where I think [0:56] the current snippet can be improved. [0:58] And I was going to make some minor edits to our post using content generated by ChatGPT. [1:04] And so, I'm thinking like 15 minutes of work – max. [1:08] And then from there it's just a waiting game to see if Google thinks that our page deserves to rank #1. [1:14] My hopes were high and spirits were even higher. [1:17] But it was then that I remembered what happened the last time I tried this… [1:22] There's a hole in my plan. [1:24] The last time I tried to make small edits and shortcut my way to #1, it didn't work. [1:29] And basically, I had to rewrite an entire article in order to win that snippet, [1:33] which by the way Google referred to as "epic tips". [1:37] Anyway, I obviously don't have enough time to do a full rewrite nor do I trust ChatGPT to do a full rewrite. [1:45] And more than anything else, I just really don't want to make the same mistake again. [1:50] My stress levels were on the rise. [1:52] And with time ticking away and no hope in sight, it felt like I was on the express train [1:57] to Fail town. [1:58] But after a moment of success, two questions popped to mind that would set me on the right track. [2:03] Ok… so what if last time actually wasn't a failure? [2:08] But rather, I didn't give Google enough time to give credit to those small changes I made? [2:14] And what if… what if rather than optimizing for one keyword, I did it for a whole bunch [2:21] until my time ran out? [2:23] I've gotta try. [2:24] So back I went to the organic keywords report to choose my keywords. [2:28] And because there were 7,000 to choose from, I made a few rules for myself. [2:32] Rule #1. Our blog post needs to be a good match for the query. [2:37] For example, this page ranking for "create an affiliate program" is a perfect match for the keyword. [2:43] Our "Affiliate marketing for beginners" guide isn't. [2:46] So, disqualified. [2:48] Rule #2. The page that owns the snippet has to have a similar or, ideally, higher level [2:54] of authority than our website. [2:56] And that's because people love to comment with things like: [2:59] "This is never going to work for 99% of websites. [3:02] Ahrefs has one of the highest domain authorities". [3:04] "It's worth mentioning that Ahrefs has high domain authority." [3:08] Yeah, we do… but so do all of our competitors, including Wikipedia that has a DR 96! [3:15] And yeah… [3:16] I'm definitely going after Wikipedia. [3:18] We have a DR 91 in case you're wondering. [3:20] And Rule #3. Our pages can't have ranked recently in the featured snippet for an extended period of time. [3:27] So again for Pagerank, the last time we had and held the snippet was like 7 months ago. [3:33] This way, I'll know that a sudden #1 ranking for a sustained period of time would have [3:38] been because of my work, and not luck. [3:41] So after 15 minutes, I'd chosen 10 keywords to go after. [3:45] It was time to call in my team of writers. [3:47] And by writers… I'm talking about ChatGPT. [3:50] Alright, so the first keyword I have is "marketing funnel". [3:53] And it looks like HotJar owns the snippet here and it's clearly a definition or paragraph snippet. [4:00] So I'm actually going to copy this definition and go to ChatGPT and I'm going to say: [4:04] "I want to win the featured snippet for the query "marketing funnel." [4:08] HotJar currently owns it with this definition." [4:10] And Paste. [4:13] "This is the definition from our page." [4:15] And I'll copy and paste that into our chat. [4:18] "Now make ours better." [4:20] And I couldn't believe the definition it gave me... [4:24] The definition is like a full blog post. [4:26] No one wants to know this. [4:28] This is terrible. [4:29] I thought this would be a homerun win. [4:31] I was even planning to scale this to the 7,000 plus eligible keywords on our blog! [4:36] We'd get a vertical spike in traffic, I'd share it on our YouTube channel, and everyone would [4:41] subscribe because they'd know that this is the place to learn digital marketing. [4:46] But all my dreams shattered – from a single prompt… [4:50] And a single prompt is the very reason why this didn't work. [4:55] Okay, so I remember reading in OpenAI's API documentation about system roles… [4:59] and I can't find the exact snippet, but just look at their code samples. [5:05] They all define a system role like, you are a helpful assistant, a personal math tutor, or an HR bot, [5:11] and you have access to files to answer employee questions about company policies. [5:16] Now, I'm not an AI expert or an engineer, but what I think a "system role" does is it [5:21] adds context and expectations to the conversation. [5:26] Like what makes a featured snippet "good"? [5:29] ChatGPT and I gotta align ourselves here so we're playing from the same playbook. [5:35] And once we're on the same page, it's only then that I can ask for a snippet optimization [5:42] and expect something, maybe, decent. [5:45] So in an attempt to set context and expectations, I asked ChatGPT to tell me the different types of [5:51] Google featured snippet?" [5:53] And the first two types were exactly what I wanted to optimize for. [5:56] I decided to start with definition snippets, so I asked it: [6:00] "What makes one definition snippet better than the other?" [6:02] And ChatGPT outlined a checklist of criteria. [6:05] Now, because I agreed with most things said, I didn't ask for modifications or provide any [6:10] further suggestions. [6:11] I needed to start editing these posts because I was racing against time. [6:15] So I gave it my first target keyword, the content from the snippet, and their entire page's content [6:21] for additional context. [6:22] I also told it my goals, gave it our full content, and asked why HotJars is better than ours [6:28] based on the criteria we established before. [6:31] And the justification was decent. [6:34] Now it was the moment of truth. [6:35] "ChatGPT, Can you rewrite my definition to be better than hotjar's? [6:41] Explain why it's better using our 7 point criteria as support." [6:45] And with only 35 minutes remaining I saw something unfamiliar… hope. [6:50] Alright, so this still isn't perfect, but it's way better than what we had before and it's [6:56] actually working off a framework which I can reuse for all of the other keywords that I chose. [7:01] So I'm going to finetune this definition with ChatGPT and then we're going to try and blitz [7:05] through the rest of our keywords. [7:07] We were off to the races. [7:09] I told ChatGPT to shorten our definition. [7:11] I gave it some complimentary images that would be used in our post, and I asked it to [7:16] use simpler language. [7:17] And while it would have been way faster to just manually edit the definition myself, [7:21] I was on a mission to prove that Google actually loves AI content when it's used to improve [7:26] clarity and user experience. [7:29] Alright, so I've done the first featured snippet and I feel like there's some chemistry now, [7:33] and so, I'm going to go and try and finish off the rest of the 9 snippet optimizations. [7:38] ChatGPT and I optimized snippets for the query "PageRank," "SEO tips," "SEO vs. SEM," and more. [7:44] We were like two peas in a pod. [7:46] And with less than three minutes remaining, it was time to call it. [7:50] Okay, so I did 9 out of 10 snippet optimizations with AI that I'm pretty happy with so all we can [7:57] do now is wait. [7:58] And we didn't have to wait long. [8:00] With just one day passing by it happened again… [8:04] Yesss!! I got my first snippet for "SEO vs SEM"!!! [8:07] I was on an SEO high and there was nothing that could bring me down. [8:11] I went to bed thinking of what might happen over the weekend. [8:14] Will Google add me to their SEO starter guide page? [8:17] Will they issue me a trillion dollars in stock? [8:20] All I knew is that whatever was coming my way would be well deserved. [8:23] And before I knew it, it was Monday December 11th. [8:27] I logged into my Ahrefs account, went to my Rank Tracker Project, and it was gone… [8:33] I lost the snippet. [8:34] And the whole point of this wasn't to just win it, but it was to win and hold it for a sustained [8:40] period of time. [8:41] So, we are back at square one with less than three minutes of our time. [8:49] I need a break…. [8:50] The next day came… then the next… and the next… but nothing. [8:55] I knew something was missing, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what. [8:59] So as a final attempt, I went back to Google and searched for "seo vs sem" to see what [9:05] could be missing.. [9:06] Okay, so this is going to sound like a completely "conspiracy SEO"-type theory, but just stay with me here. [9:13] So, I noticed that the SERP is still showing the old date. [9:17] And that's because I didn't change the updated date in the post considering it was a super-minor edit. [9:23] So, I think I have like three minutes left from my original hour, so I'm going to just change [9:29] the updated dates to the time the posts were changed. [9:32] No bumping to the top of the blog or anything like that. [9:35] Literally, just going to change the dates. [9:37] So I did that with the 9 posts that I'd updated and submitted most of them to Google search [9:41] console for indexing. [9:43] My timebank had officially hit zero.. [9:46] And two days later, I'd learn that my conspiracy SEO theory may not have been as crazy as I had [9:52] originally thought. [9:54] Okay, so, it's December 15th and I think something's happening. [9:58] So, our share of voice had a noticeable bump for our featured snippet keywords – the most [10:03] notable movement being for the keyword "pagerank." [10:07] And yeah, it's not a number one ranking but I feel like something's brewing here. [10:12] And as crazy as it might sound, I think it has to do with changing this tiny little part, [10:18] which by the way, has nothing to do with the quality of the changes. [10:23] Was I going crazy? [10:24] It sure felt that way. [10:26] So I had to get to the bottom of this. [10:28] And I knew just the person to call to find out if I was crazy or if there was something [10:32] happening under the surface. [10:34] Okay, so, when I changed the definition for the PageRank article and Google recrawled [10:39] the page, nothing really happened in terms of, like, a boost in rankings. [10:43] But when I changed the last updated date and nothing else, we jumped, like, 3 positions. [10:48] So, do you think that the date change had anything to do with this boost? [10:54] Maybe. [10:55] There's a lot of SEOs that believe if you update the date - it's going to help. [10:59] I think you probably triggered another system, maybe the Featured snippet system, you got [11:03] a better answer and it's trying to rank you higher. [11:06] Some of those processes are delayed a little bit, so I think that's a little more likely. [11:10] So you're saying there's still hope to win the snippet? [11:12] There's always hope. [11:14] The fire inside of me was reignited. [11:16] And I knew it was just a matter of time before we'd see success. [11:20] But with the holidays just around the corner, I decided to take some much needed time off. [11:25] I sang carols with the family, exchanged gifts, and rang in the New Year with a delicious burrito. [11:30] And before I knew it, I was back in the office on January 3rd, checking our rankings… [11:36] I did it!!!! I can't believe I did it! [11:38] Alright, so, I got the snippet for "seo vs. sem" and I got the snippet for "keyword cannibalization"! [11:45] Also, we went off from position 6 to position 3 for the keyword "pagerank." [11:50] So, we're holding it and we're really not that far off from overtaking Wikipedia. [11:55] But I quickly realized that the battle wasn't won because at least one of our keywords [11:59] needed to hold the #1 ranking position for an extended period of time. [12:04] Days went by and we lost the featured snippet for "keyword cannibalization." [12:08] But we were still going strong holding the snippet for "seo vs. sem." [12:13] And more importantly, our total share of voice was at a sustained new level. [12:17] Something was happening. [12:19] Then on January 9th, the unthinkable happened. [12:22] Yooo, I just outranked Wikipedia! [12:25] And by the end of the month, I hit peak adrenaline, winning 3 out of 9 featured [12:29] snippets using just AI content. [12:32] Now, as for the keyword "seo vs sem", we held a #1 position for well over a month and the last [12:38] time this happened was nearly a year ago. [12:41] And the same happened for "pagerank" with a tiny bit more volatility. [12:44] By the time we were halfway through February, we were holding the snippet for 3 keywords: [12:49] "marketing funnel," "seo vs sem," and "pagerank." [12:52] Okay, so we are at the end February and it's safe to say that this is a win, but I want [12:58] to show you something even crazier than ranking #1 for a few keywords. [13:02] So, I was tracking the 9 URLs I was working on in an Ahrefs, and just look at the massive [13:07] total traffic boost! [13:08] Even with just these tiny optimizations we've got an estimated over 10,000 more monthly visits from search. [13:16] This is amazing!!! [13:18] But then I realized that maybe I hadn't proven anything. [13:21] I mean - did the ranking increase come from changing the dates? [13:25] Did we just luck out from some algorithm update? [13:27] I knew that the only way to prove that Google loves AI content was to switch it back to [13:33] the original human-written content. [13:35] So I went to archive.org, pasted in one of our URLs, but they didn't have a snapshot [13:40] of our page when I made the changes. [13:42] So I checked in Ahrefs Page Inspect... [13:44] Oh my goodness, there's so many dates to choose from. [13:47] I chose the date right before I made the changes to this page. [13:51] I scrolled down and immediately saw the original version there. [13:55] So all I had to do was copy and paste this into WordPress and hit the Update button. [14:00] Then I submitted it to Google search console. [14:03] Rinse and repeat for the other pages and we're back to the waiting game. [14:07] But I didn't have to wait long… [14:08] Alright, so it's only been like three hours since I submitted for indexing in GSC and we already [14:13] lost the snippet for "seo vs. sem." [14:16] And let me remind you - we held that snippet for, like, two months straight… [14:21] And a few hours later, we'd lost the snippet for "marketing funnels" and "pagerank." [14:26] Now, while I may have proven that the AI content snippets beat our human written snippets, [14:31] it doesn't exactly mean that Google loves all content created by AI tools, clearly. [14:36] Google loves what the user loves, and when a user searches for informational content, [14:41] they want simple, clear, and concise information, which AI just so happens to be good at creating [14:48] – probably better than humans. [14:50] So, rather than creating spammy AI content, risking getting deindexed and losing a large [14:55] portion of your business in the name of scale… [14:58] Focus on clarity and AI may just be a good assistant for that. [15:02] If you want to see how to do that, go and watch our video where I ranked #1 for a super competitive [15:07] query in under 24 hours.
