[0:00] Hey guys, this is Tim Soulo from Ahrefs, and today I wanted to give you my answer [0:06] to the big question: [0:09] "how to rank number one in Google." [0:13] What you see on my screen right now, is a cool article on Ahrefs' blog that talks about the famous [0:19] "Skyscraper Technique", by Brian Dean. [0:23] The article was written by Dale Cudmore and [0:26] when I was publishing it on Ahrefs' blog, I decided that we should try to target [0:33] the 'Skyscraper Technique' keyword, and see how well we can rank for it. [0:38] Actually, I didn't even do much to optimize the article for this keyword. [0:44] As you can see, we have the exact match keyword in the URL of this article. [0:50] We don't have the exact match keyword in the heading of this article, [0:56] but actually, the keyword appears in the content of the article 16 times. [1:02] But we didn't do anything to have so many appearances of this keyword, [1:08] it just happened naturally as Dale was writing the article. [1:12] And actually one last thing is the title of the article. [1:18] Search for the title. [1:21] Yeah, the title starts from the keyword, [1:23] "Skyscraper Technique." [1:25] That's all we did to optimize the article for the keyword [1:29] "Skyscraper Technique." So now, let's go to Google and see how well we managed to [1:35] rank for it. [1:37] And as you can see, the first two positions are taken by the author of [1:41] the technique, Brian Dean, from Backlinko.com, [1:46] and the third position is blog.ahrefs.com. [1:50] And the first one is CoSchedule's blog, which is [1:55] also a very great resource and a very great tool. [1:59] What I want to do now is understand why the post by Brian Dean ranks number one, [2:06] why the post at Ahrefs blog ranks number three, [2:10] and why the post by Co Schedule's blog ranks number four. [2:16] And I'm going to use the tool called 'Site Explorer' by Ahrefs, [2:22] to get some takeaways about why these posts rank where they rank. [2:28] I am now going to open two more instances of Site Explorer and put all three URLs [2:37] there to be able to compare the data behind them. [2:43] Okay, that's it. We have the data for all three posts. [2:49] First of all, take a look at the amount of backlinks [2:52] pointing to each of the posts. So the first one is the skyscraper technique by [2:59] Backlinko, and we can see that there are 936 backlinks. [3:06] That's a ton of backlinks you guys! [3:11] Our article that ranks number three has only 139 backlinks. [3:17] So this actually explains why the article by Backlinko ranks above it. [3:23] And the last one is the post on Co Schedule's blog and it only has 61 backlinks. [3:31] You may also take a look at the amount of referring domains because this also has [3:37] a huge impact on how well you rank. [3:40] So the post by Backlinko, has 406 referring domains. [3:46] Again, that's a very big number for a single article. [3:51] Let's go to Ahrefs. [3:52] We see only 30 domains. [3:55] And CoSchedule has 18 domains. [3:59] So here we have pretty straightforward data, [4:03] the more links and the more referring domains you [4:06] have, the better you rank. [4:08] That's of course considering that the quality of [4:12] content is the same for all three URLs, which is true in our case. [4:19] One more thing that you might want to compare is [4:22] how all these people link to you. [4:25] I mean, which anchor text they use, while linking to your page. [4:29] So, let's scroll down to the portion of this report that's called anchors cloud [4:34] and you can pretty much see that for Brian Dean from Backlinko.com, [4:39] the Skyscraper Technique keyword, [4:42] accounts for 34% of all backlinks. [4:47] But let's see blog.ahrefs.com. [4:50] Again, if I scroll down to the anchors cloud, here's the funny thing: [4:56] the most common anchor of our backlinks coming to this page is, [5:02] 'illustrate key points', which is totally irrelevant to the skyscraper technique. [5:08] And the last one is Co Schedule. [5:11] Let's check their anchor cloud. [5:14] Again, they have skyscraper technique in 22% of all backlinks. [5:21] What all this data says to me, is that the [5:25] amount of links and the amount of referring domains, [5:29] is still a more powerful ranking factor than the actual anchors of these links. [5:37] But I'm sure you guys are still waiting for me to answer the question: [5:42] how to rank number one. [5:44] So, in our case with the 'skyscraper technique' keyword, to outrank Brian Dean and rank [5:51] number one, I guess we'll have to create backlinks from like four hundred more [5:58] domains because only thirty domains link to our article, while four hundred [6:06] different web sites link to the post by Brian Dean. [6:10] As you can see, by the graph of referring pages by time, [6:17] the amount of links and referring domains [6:20] just keeps growing while in our case, there was a quick bump and now I [6:27] don't think we'll get a lot more links. [6:31] So to be honest, in this particular case, [6:35] it's almost impossible for us to outrank Brian Dean. [6:40] But if that was the matter of life and death for me, to outrank Brian for the [6:46] keyword skyscraper technique, here's what I would probably do. [6:50] I would open the links report of Ahrefs Site Explorer and try to get a link from every single [6:58] domain where Brian has earned links from. [7:03] And then I would need to take it a step further [7:06] and find a dozen or two more domains to get links from, [7:12] so that eventually the number of backlinks every end referring domains on our article [7:19] would be a lot bigger than Brian has. [7:24] That would definitely help me to outrank him. [7:27] So that's it! This is how you rank number one for practically any keyword. [7:32] You need to check who's ranking at the first spot, replicate all his links and [7:37] then go get even more. [7:40] I'm not saying this is something easy to do, but [7:42] this is what will get you the ranking you need. Hope you enjoyed this video! [7:47] Let me know if you have any feedback in the comments section below. [7:51] Bye!
