[0:00] Just two years ago, I was running an agency. [0:02] And our client base was pretty widespread. [0:05] Everyone from lawyers to banks to world renowned DJs. [0:08] Now, you want to know the craziest part of this all? [0:10] We didn't even have a website. [0:12] So how were we able to get SEO clients and how can you get them for your business? [0:16] Keep watching because I've got some pretty cool tactics to share with you today. [0:20] Stay tuned. [0:21] [music] [0:25] What's up SEOs? [0:26] Sam Oh here with Ahrefs, the SEO tool that helps you grow your search traffic, research [0:30] your competitors, and dominate your niche. [0:32] Now, when I first started looking for client work, man… it was tough. [0:36] But after focusing on just a few strategies, [0:39] things started to click and getting clients became actually really fun. [0:43] In fact, the very reason I'm working at Ahrefs today is because I tried to convert them into a client, [0:49] which worked and didn't work at the same time. [0:52] More on this later because right now I want to get into some strategies that worked for me [0:57] and others in my network. [0:58] And I hope they'll work for you too. [1:00] Let's get to it. [1:01] Now serious sidenote: [1:02] This isn't a tutorial about getting clients then trying to figure out if you can actually help them. [1:08] I hate those kinds of courses and tutorials. [1:11] You should have a history of producing results and be able to help any client you choose to take on. [1:16] So if you're just looking to make a quick buck, I recommend mastering your craft first [1:21] so that the tips and strategies you learn today will be 10X more effective. [1:26] Alright, so the first way to get SEO clients is to get involved in partnerships. [1:31] Now, there are two types of partnerships I want to talk about. [1:34] You might have heard of the first one and that's to team up with non-competing agencies and freelancers. [1:40] For example, if SEO is the service you sell, then look for like-minded agencies that specialize [1:45] in other digital marketing channels like PPC, web design or social media. [1:50] Assuming your businesses are somewhat at an equal stage, then referring clients [1:54] is a free and passive way to grow together. [1:57] There's no need to get greedy. [1:59] The SEO industry is approaching 80 billion dollars. [2:02] And chances are, if you're watching this video, you probably don't own very much of that market. [2:08] A great place to meet like-minded people is marketing conferences because they attract [2:12] marketers from all lines of work. [2:15] For example, if you're a freelancer that focuses on SEO, you might want to go to a general marketing conference [2:20] to meet web design, social media and PPC freelancers. [2:25] You probably wouldn't want to go to an SEO conference for this purpose because everyone [2:29] will be selling the exact same services as you. [2:32] Now, if you don't have an "equal" number of leads to pass back and forth, [2:36] then a common structure is to offer a 10-20% kickback for any referrals that turn into clients. [2:42] The second partnership model is probably my favorite and that's to partner with companies [2:46] who have your audiences, but are in completely unrelated industries. [2:51] An awesome example of this is to team up with business bankers and private lenders. [2:56] Everyday, they have tons of leads coming in and if you're dealing with one of the bigger banks, [3:01] they can send you more clients than you can handle. [3:04] A model that I've seen work really well is to have the lender sell a high-level SEO strategy. [3:10] Reason being, the barrier to entry is pretty low. [3:13] They can essentially upsell your services for a one-time fee and take around 15-25%. [3:19] You then have the opportunity to give your presentation, [3:22] showcase your value, and bring them onto a retainer agreement. [3:26] Alternatively, you can approach other professionals like accountants and corporate lawyers [3:31] where you can refer clients to each other. [3:33] Partnerships don't always come easy, but if you're able to execute and systematize, your revenue will grow fast. [3:40] Another way to find SEO clients is to speak at conferences. [3:43] I actually didn't attend or speak at conferences until I was out of the agency world. [3:48] And I think it was a huge opportunity I missed out on. [3:51] For example, I spoke at a conference earlier this year where I gave a talk on link building. [3:56] Afterwards, a handful of people came up to me. [3:58] But they weren't there to ask me questions about the strategies I shared. [4:01] They were there to hire me. [4:03] And these weren't your average mom and pop shops. [4:05] They were decision makers from companies doing 1-20 million dollars in ARR or backed by VC money. [4:11] I strongly recommend applying to speak at conferences where your target audience would be [4:16] and deliver as much value as you can. [4:19] Next up is inbound marketing. [4:20] And this is likely the most valuable for your business [4:23] because your results are your strongest selling point. [4:26] For example, Ahrefs isn't an agency. [4:29] We provide a suite of SEO tools. [4:31] But a lot of the content we create is targeted around keywords that potential SEO clients [4:36] might be searching for. [4:38] And they're finding us through marketing mediums like Google and YouTube. [4:41] And by teaching how to do SEO, not only do we get customers for our tools, but we also [4:46] get numerous requests for consultations. [4:49] Not to mention the individual emails we get from great companies. [4:53] By creating content that demonstrates your expertise and ranks, you're building trust [4:58] with prospective clients through proof of concept. [5:00] And in my opinion, trust is the most valuable commodity when it comes to winning new clients [5:06] because it instills confidence. [5:08] Now, if you're still relatively new to the game, it might be advantageous to focus on one specific niche. [5:14] For example, if you wanted to do SEO for realtors, [5:17] you can find some topics by going to Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer and searching for broad keywords like "SEO," [5:23] "keyword research," and "link building." [5:25] Next, go to the Phrase match report to see keyword ideas that contain your seed keywords. [5:30] From here, I'll click on the Include search filter, [5:33] and type in words related to the profession like "realtor" and "real estate." [5:37] And I'll choose the "Any" option to show all keywords that contain any of these words. [5:42] And as you can see, search volumes may not be massive compared to the head terms, [5:47] but they're lower competition, and seem to have a good amount of commercial value based on [5:51] the CPC values of these terms. [5:54] We have a full tutorial on doing keyword research, so feel free to check that out for more great ideas. [5:59] The next strategy is actually the last one I tested before giving up agency work, [6:03] and that's to apply for jobs. [6:06] As an agency or freelancer, you want clients. [6:08] And when a company posts a job listing, they likely want to hire someone in-house. [6:13] Now, while these two things might seem vastly different, [6:16] there's a more powerful factor that comes into play. [6:19] And that's intent. [6:21] So nearly two years ago, I decided to run a lead generation experiment on Ahrefs. [6:25] They had a job listing for a "funnel hacker," so I applied for the job with the intent to turn Ahrefs into a client. [6:31] Tim, on the other hand, was the one handling interviews. [6:34] And he was looking to hire someone in-house. [6:36] Long story short, we were able to come to some kind of agreement where I was able to [6:40] work full-time for Ahrefs, but I was still able to be involved with my agency. [6:45] And after a year of doing work for Ahrefs, I decided to give up agency work. [6:49] Now, my point is that with job postings, you and the lead have the same overall intention. [6:55] In my opinion, if you can sell them as an individual candidate, then converting them to an agency client [7:01] is the easiest part of the battle. [7:03] If you want to learn more about this little experiment, [7:05] I've added a timestamped link in the description [7:08] which goes through the story from my end as well as Tim on the hiring the side. [7:12] Finally is the most common approach to getting SEO leads and that's cold outreach. [7:17] Now, when you're doing cold outreach, you want to provide as much value as possible [7:21] and you definitely don't want to be too pushy in your first email. [7:25] Here's a sample template that Daryl Rosser wrote on our blog about getting SEO leads. [7:29] I'll break it down as we go through it. [7:32] "Hi Ricky, I came across your website today when searching for "Roofing in London," [7:36] and noticed that you don't show up in the maps section and are #33 in the organic listings. [7:42] That's a lot of calls you're missing out on." [7:44] So he told Ricky how he found him and addressed a pain point that I'm sure Ricky already knew about. [7:49] He goes on to say: [7:51] "So I made a video showing you why your top 3 competitors are out-ranking you: [7:56] Site 1, Site 2, and Site 3." [7:59] This is a super-simple way to differentiate yourself [8:01] from all of the other emails these people are getting. [8:04] Most people won't go through the trouble to create a video and it also gives a more personalized feel. [8:09] Best of all, he's mentioning competitors that Ricky should be well aware of. [8:14] Finally, he says: [8:15] "Are you the right person to send this video? [8:18] If you are, please reply to this email, and I'll send it over. [8:21] Otherwise, just let me know." [8:23] The final part is a simple conversation starter. [8:25] Do you want the video, yes or no? [8:27] Or if I contacted the wrong person, then can you point me in the right direction? [8:31] Then after they respond, you make a video, [8:34] send it to them, and have your CTA in the video, which would be to jump on a call. [8:38] Super-simple and I can imagine it converts really well. [8:42] Now, for you agency owners and freelancers out there, [8:44] I'd love to know what you do to get more SEO clients. [8:47] Leave a comment and if you enjoyed this video, make sure to like, share and subscribe for more [8:51] actionable SEO and marketing tutorials. [8:54] So keep grinding away, find creative ways to find prospects, and I'll see you in the next tutorial.
