[0:00] Everyone wants to rank for competitive
keywords, but sometimes, it's just not
[0:04] possible in the short term.
[0:06] And that's why everyone loves
low competition keywords.
[0:09] They're easy to rank for.
[0:11] You don't need many and in some cases,
any backlinks to the page, and they send
[0:16] you a decent amount of consistent
search traffic month over month.
[0:20] So in this video, I'll show you how to find
low competition keywords and to confidently
[0:25] determine if they are indeed low competition.
[0:29] Stay tuned.
[0:29] [music]
[0:34] First, let's get on the same page and talk
about what a low competition keyword is.
[0:39] Simply put, it's a keyword that's
easy to rank for.
[0:42] Now, with so many different factors that go
into ranking on Google, people generally think
[0:46] of low competition keywords as topics that
don't require a lot of backlinks to rank high.
[0:53] But the thing is ranking high on Google
isn't always just about backlinks.
[0:58] So for the rest of this tutorial, we'll go
through a 5-step process which will help
[1:02] you find low competition keywords and more
importantly, validate that these keywords are
[1:07] indeed easy to rank for.
[1:09] So the first step is to brainstorm
a list of topics.
[1:13] And when I say topics, I'm talking about broad
keywords that are related to your niche.
[1:17] These are called seed keywords.
[1:20] For example, if we have a site on parenting,
some broad keywords might include "parenting,"
[1:25] "stroller," "pregnancy," "babies," and "car seat."
[1:30] Try to think of 5-10 broad topics within your
niche, but try to be specific enough that
[1:36] the keywords can't be interpreted
in too many different ways.
[1:39] Alright, step 2 is to expand your
topics with a keyword research tool.
[1:44] Keyword research tools give you information
about how often words and phrases are searched.
[1:49] They're also the main way SEOs
generate keyword lists.
[1:53] And the one I'll be using is
Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer.
[1:56] So to get started, enter your list of seed
keywords you just brainstormed and then
[2:01] run the search.
[2:03] Next, go to the Phrase match report.
[2:05] Now, with well over 3 million keyword
ideas, we'll need to narrow this down.
[2:10] This brings us to step 3, which is to filter
keywords for low difficulty scores.
[2:15] A lot of keyword research tools provide
some kind of ranking difficulty metric.
[2:20] At Ahrefs, we call ours Keyword
Difficulty or KD.
[2:24] Our KD scores run on a scale of 0-100 and
tries to determine how hard it'll be to rank
[2:30] in Google's top 10 results for
a given search query.
[2:33] And the way we calculate it is based on a
weighted average of the number of websites
[2:38] that link to the top 10 pages.
[2:40] This means that the top 10 pages for low
difficulty scores won't have many linking
[2:45] domains pointing at them.
[2:47] So let's set a Keyword Difficulty filter with
a minimum value of 0 and a maximum
[2:51] value of 20.
[2:53] And now we have over 160,000 potential
low competition topics.
[2:58] The key word here is "potential."
[3:01] Again, ranking isn't just about backlinks.
[3:04] There are lots of other things
you need to consider.
[3:07] And we'll go deep into some examples
of "false positives" in a bit.
[3:11] For now, let's move on to the next step, which
is to check if you can match searcher intent.
[3:16] Search intent tells us the reason
behind a searcher's query.
[3:19] And if you can't match searcher intent, you
won't be able to rank - even if the query is
[3:23] so-called "low competition."
[3:26] For example, when someone searches for
"best baby strollers, are they looking for blog
[3:31] posts, product pages, or ecommerce
category pages?
[3:34] The easiest way to find out is to just Google
the query and look at the top-ranking pages
[3:39] for what we call, the 3 C's of search intent.
[3:43] The first C is content type -- so are the
top- ranking pages blog posts, product
[3:48] or category pages?
[3:49] In this case, they're all blog posts.
[3:52] The second C is content format.
[3:54] So are they listicle type pages, how-tos,
opinion pieces, or step-by-step tutorials?
[4:00] For this query, they're all
listicle-styled posts.
[4:04] And the third C is content angle.
[4:07] This is the dominant selling proposition
that the top-ranking pages are using.
[4:11] In this case, they've gone with the "freshness"
angle, seeing as the top pages are using
[4:16] the current year in their titles.
[4:18] Assuming you have a blog, you should
be able to match searcher intent.
[4:22] Now, what about a query like "baby strollers?"
[4:25] Looking at the top pages, you'll see that
they're mostly ecommerce category pages.
[4:30] So if you don't actually sell baby
strollers, it would be tough to rank.
[4:34] There's more to search intent than the 3 C's
but this should be enough to get you set on
[4:38] the right path.
[4:40] But I highly recommend watching the lesson on
search intent from our SEO course for beginners
[4:45] so I'll link that up in the description.
[4:47] Alright, the final step is probably the most
important, and that's to assess whether
[4:51] the query is actually low difficulty.
[4:55] Metrics like Keyword Difficulty and Referring
Domains can only tell you so much.
[5:00] And while combining these metrics can be
helpful, they don't always paint a full picture.
[5:05] For example, the query, "compact flash card
reader" has a low keyword difficulty score.
[5:11] And if we scroll down to the SERP, you'll see
that the top 10 pages don't really have that
[5:15] many links pointing at them.
[5:17] But that doesn't mean if you can get more
links and match search intent that you'll
[5:22] be able to outrank these sites.
[5:24] Now, you might be thinking...well, it's because
all of these websites have high authority.
[5:28] Well, in my opinion, more than DR,
it's about brand equity.
[5:32] Sites like Amazon, Best Buy, and BH Photo
Video are places people trust and want to
[5:39] buy products from.
[5:40] They've built trust and topical authority in the
area of electronics and photo and video gear.
[5:46] And I won't even get into on-page
considerations like facets.
[5:50] So is this a low competition topic?
[5:53] Definitely not unless you're an equal
to one of these brands.
[5:56] The big thing to take away from this is that
there's no tool that can accurately determine
[6:01] ranking difficulty with a 1 to 3 digit number.
[6:04] And this is one of the reasons why we've
made our Keyword Difficulty score based
[6:09] on just linking domains.
[6:11] Backlinks are generally a prominent
ranking signal.
[6:14] With that said, you need to manually assess
each individual SERP to understand whether
[6:19] the query is indeed a low competition topic.
[6:22] Now, we've looked at an example of
a "false positive," so let's look at
[6:25] an example of an actual low-competition
topic and how we come to that conclusion.
[6:30] So the keyword we'll be looking at is "best
convertible car seat for small cars."
[6:35] Looking at KD, you'll see that
it's relatively low.
[6:38] So what that tells us is that the top-ranking
pages, for the most part, don't have many
[6:43] referring domains pointing at them.
[6:45] So that's a good sniff test, but nothing more.
[6:48] Let's scroll down to the SERP.
[6:50] Now, the first thing I'm going to look at is
whether I can match the dominant search
[6:54] intent because if I can't, then
there's no point in looking further.
[6:57] And you'll see that they're all listicle-styled
blog posts, which would be easy to match.
[7:02] Next, let's do a quick check of the DR column.
[7:05] And it looks like there's a mixture of both
low and high DR sites, which is promising
[7:10] because it tells us that the query probably
isn't going to be a matter of just brand.
[7:15] And the fact that very low authority websites
were able to penetrate the top 10 tells us that
[7:20] our hypothetical website
could probably compete too.
[7:24] So far so good.
[7:26] Now, let's look at the domains that are
ranking to get an idea of topical authority.
[7:30] Meaning, do these sites likely have lots of
content related to babies, parenting, or baby
[7:35] products like car seats?
[7:37] And it looks like they all do.
[7:39] Now, assuming our site is related to babies,
baby products, parenting, or whatever closely
[7:44] related topics, then we'd likely
be on a similar playing field.
[7:48] The next thing I'd want to look at is
relevance of the top-ranking pages.
[7:52] Looking at the top page, the title specifically
says "best convertible car seats for small cars."
[7:59] It exactly matches the query.
[8:02] Now, it's not to say that they're ranking
higher because of an exact-match keyword,
[8:06] but convertible car seats for small cars
actually serve a very specific need.
[8:12] And this is likely why some of these lower
authority websites with low page authority
[8:16] are ranking ahead of bigger players.
[8:19] For example, this page is targeting just
"the best convertible car seats" in general.
[8:25] And finally, let's look at the Referring
Domains column.
[8:28] As you can see, the top-ranking page
only has a handful of referring domains.
[8:32] In fact, if we click on the referring domains
number for the page, you'll see that all of
[8:37] the links come from relatively
low-authority sites.
[8:40] And if I click the Link Type filter, you'll
see that only one of those links is followed.
[8:45] So assuming we can outdo these pages on
the content side of things, this to me looks
[8:49] like a low competition keyword.
[8:52] As a final tip, I want to show you one
super-cool trick to find low competition
[8:56] keywords with high traffic potential.
[8:59] Not just that, but it'll help you find totally
new groups of low competition keywords
[9:04] in virtually any niche.
[9:05] So to get started, go to Ahrefs Content
Explorer, which is a searchable database
[9:10] of over five billion pages.
[9:12] And since we're working on a hypothetical
parenting site, let's set our query to "parenting"
[9:17] and run the search.
[9:18] Now we need to set a few filters.
[9:21] First, I'll set a referring domains filter with
a maximum value of something low like 10.
[9:27] Meaning, the pages for our search
query won't have many links.
[9:30] Next, I'll set an organic traffic filter to
show pages with a minimum of at least
[9:36] 500 monthly organic visits.
[9:38] And right away, you'll see over 3,500 pages
that mention parenting, get at least 500
[9:45] monthly organic visits and have 10
or fewer referring domains.
[9:50] Now, it's just a matter of looking at
the titles for topic ideas that would
[9:53] be appropriate for your site.
[9:55] For example, this one on coconut oil
for diaper rash seems promising.
[10:00] So I'll click on the page traffic box to see
the top keywords the page ranks for.
[10:05] And judging by the KD values, it does
look like another low competition topic.
[10:10] But you still need to manually
assess the search results.
[10:14] Now, if you happen to be in a niche without
a ton of low competition keywords or you just
[10:18] have an unhealthy obsession with easy-to-rank-
for topics, then you can use these keywords
[10:23] as new seeds and go through the first
steps I showed you in the tutorial again.
[10:28] So I'll go back to Keywords Explorer, but
this time, I'll search for "diaper rash" as
[10:32] my seed.
[10:34] Next, I'll go to the Phrase match report.
[10:36] And finally, I'll set the maximum
KD value to 20 again.
[10:40] And now we have even more great keyword
ideas where some will likely be very easy to
[10:45] rank for.
[10:46] Now, while low competition keywords are
great to target when your website is fairly
[10:50] new or has low authority, they shouldn't
be the only strategy you use.
[10:55] Higher competition topics generally lead
to more traffic and links, two things that
[11:00] all SEOs are after.
[11:02] Plus competitive topics usually
have higher commercial value.
[11:06] So it's worth going after competitive topics but
you should set your time horizon realistically.
[11:12] Now, go and try this out for your site and
if you enjoyed this video, make sure to like,
[11:15] share and subscribe for more actionable
SEO and marketing tutorials.
[11:20] I'll see you in the next one.
