[0:00] Part 4. How perform an SEO audit of your published content. [0:04] In the previous lessons I showed you how to find amazing content opportunities with huge [0:08] traffic and business potential. [0:10] And now you also know how to squeeze the most traffic out of these opportunities. [0:14] So you must be keen to pick a new topic and write an amazing new article for your blog, right? [0:18] Well, let me stop you right there. [0:20] If you're looking for a quick win, the best thing you can do is audit the content that [0:24] you already have on your blog. [0:26] And here's why. [0:27] First of all, your published articles may already have some backlinks, which signals to Google [0:32] that they are cool and deserve to rank. [0:34] While the new article has to be promoted in order to get some websites to link to it. [0:38] Secondly, your competitors most likely don't bother updating their content. [0:42] So if the top-ranking articles for your target keyword seem outdated, you can often outrank [0:47] them by making your article up-to-date and re-publishing it as if it was brand new. [0:52] Google will usually reward fresh content with higher rankings. [0:55] I see this happen quite often. [0:56] And finally, your past articles might be simply targeting the wrong keyword, and therefore [1:01] not bringing you any traffic. [1:03] Figuring out the right searcher intent and re-optimzing your article for the right keyword [1:07] can do wonders to your search traffic. [1:09] So here's how you audit your existing content. [1:11] Go through every published article that you have on your blog and assign it [1:15] to one of the three following groups. [1:17] Group #1: "Update" [1:19] These are the articles, that already bring you some nice traffic from search. [1:22] I'm pretty sure each and every one of them could be improved somehow, using the tactics, [1:26] that you've just learned. [1:27] Even your best-performing articles can be updated and improved. [1:31] Take a moment to think about it. [1:32] Most bloggers never bother improving their top- performing articles, and that's a huge mistake. [1:38] Because the guys who rank below you are most likely working hard to outrank you. [1:43] Group #2: "Merge" [1:45] It doesn't make much sense to have multiple articles on the same topic. [1:48] It's always better to have one great in-depth article other than five mediocre ones. [1:54] Especially, if those duplicate articles have some backlinks. [1:57] You can use 301 redirects to point these backlinks to your main article on that topic and help it rank better. [2:03] Group #3: "Delete" [2:04] This group is optional. [2:06] But here at Ahrefs Blog we have deleted nearly half of our old articles. [2:10] The primary reason for doing that was that these articles were massively outdated and [2:14] didn't bring any search traffic at all. [2:16] So deleting them didn't make any difference to our traffic. [2:19] However, some people believe that getting rid of your underperforming content makes [2:23] Google love your website more. [2:25] I cannot prove or dispove that statement, but if I were in charge of Google, I'd definitely [2:29] use something along these lines as a ranking signal. [2:32] And that's pretty much it. [2:33] I'm sure you have many great articles on your blog that could be futher improved. [2:37] Do it and you'll see a nice traffic boost in the next few weeks. [2:40] And then you can go ahead and publish some new amazing articles, using all the tactics [2:45] and strategies that you've learned so far in this course. [2:48] Speaking of writing amazing articles, that is exacly what we're going to cover in the [2:52] very next lesson. [2:53] Sounds good? Then I'll see you there.
