[0:00] In this video, I’m going to show you how
to do a basic backlink analysis on your competitors’
[0:04] websites.
[0:05] Stay tuned.
[0:06] [Music]
[0:10] What’s up guys.
[0:11] Sam Oh here with Ahrefs.
[0:13] So today’s video is about analyzing your
competitors’ websites and webpages to uncover
[0:18] actionable link building opportunities for
your own site.
[0:21] If you’re an experienced SEO, what I’m
about to share with you in the next few minutes
[0:25] may seem somewhat basic, but there will be
two follow-up videos with advanced techniques
[0:30] that you’re going to love and I promise
you this.
[0:32] By the end of this series, there are two things
you’ll be able to do.
[0:36] The first is to be able to analyze any website
and uncover potentially thousands of link
[0:40] prospects.
[0:41] And the second thing is that we're going to
speed up your link building efficiency using
[0:45] some really, really cool hacks that you may
not be using yet.
[0:48] So, let’s jump right in.
[0:49] First, we’ll go to Site Explorer and enter
in a domain or URL that you want to analyze.
[0:54] So, I’ll use the domain, contentmarketinginstitute.com
for our example.
[0:59] Here, you’ll see a top level view of the
website you’re analyzing.
[1:02] And since we’re just focusing on backlink
analysis and link building throughout this
[1:06] series, we’re just going to talk about these
two metrics here.
[1:09] Backlinks and referring domains.
[1:11] You can see that Content Marketing Institute
has almost 2 million backlinks with almost
[1:16] 23,000 referring domains.
[1:18] But you might have noticed that right below,
there’s mention of “recent” and “historical.”
[1:23] These 3 numbers represent our 3 backlink indexes.
[1:26] The Live Index contains all links that were
live on our last recrawl, which tells you
[1:31] that they're almost certainly live right now.
[1:33] Our recent index contains all live links plus
lost backlinks that were removed within the
[1:38] past 90 days or so.
[1:40] So this could mean anything from the website
having temporary downtime when we last crawled
[1:44] it or the website no longer existing at all.
[1:47] Finally, is the historical index.
[1:49] And these contain the history of all links,
dead or alive.
[1:53] This is the reason why each link index is
bigger than the next.
[1:57] If we scroll down a bit, then you’ll see
a few interactive graphs that shows you the
[2:00] dynamics of link acquisition over time, both for the number of referring domains and referring pages.
[2:06] And there are a few filters you can use here too.
[2:09] By default, you’ll see the growth over the
last year, but you can narrow this down to
[2:12] the last 30 days, or look at an all time view
to see how each website has done over time.
[2:18] These graphs are the most useful when you
compare another website to it side by side.
[2:23] This will reveal the site or URL that’s
more effective at acquiring backlinks.
[2:28] So if I go back to Site Explorer, we can do
an apples to apples comparison of another
[2:32] website in the content marketing industry.
[2:34] I’ll use copyblogger.com as our comparison site.
[2:39] If we look at these side-by-side, you’ll
notice that CMI has had consistent year-to-year
[2:43] link growth, while Copyblogger’s link acquisition
has been a little bit stagnant, especially
[2:48] in the past couple of years.
[2:50] When you find websites that seem to acquire
links at a fast pace, these are totally worth
[2:55] deeper analysis, which is exactly what we’ll
be doing in the next couple of videos.
[2:59] In this graph, we’re looking at an overall
domain comparison, but if you compare URLs
[3:04] of two pieces of content on a similar topic,
you’ll instantly see which page is more
[3:09] popular with link acquisition.
[3:11] This is a quick 5 - 10 second analysis you can
do before you actually jump into the individual
[3:16] backlinks reports. So I highly recommend doing this.
[3:20] Alright, the last graphs on this page that
we’ll be covering today, are the new and
[3:24] lost referring domains and backlinks graphs.
[3:27] These graphs show you a non-cumulative view
of a website or a URL’s backlink growth.
[3:32] The cool thing with this graph is that you
can quickly scan for spikes that will help
[3:36] you identify new link worthy pages that your
competitors are creating, and it's going to
[3:41] help you reverse engineer link building strategies
or campaigns that were implemented over a
[3:46] specific period of time.
[3:48] I’ll have a really cool example for you
of two titans fighting for the keyword “SEO”
[3:52] in the next video.
[3:53] The last thing that I want to show you in
this basic backlinks analysis is the referring
[3:57] domains report.
[3:58] If you look to the sidebar, and click on “Referring
Domains”, you’ll see a table that shows
[4:02] you all of the unique linking websites to
this target domain that we’re analyzing,
[4:06] right now.
[4:07] Now, if the site has a ton of referring domains,
manually reviewing it will be near impossible.
[4:13] So in this case, you’d need to use some
of the filters in this report to narrow down
[4:17] the results.
[4:18] So, the first thing I would do when I hit
this table is to set the link type filter
[4:22] to 'dofollow' to find only the domains that
are passing link equity.
[4:27] All of these columns are sortable, so if we
sort by the number of dofollow links in descending
[4:32] order, you’ll notice some websites link
to CMI hundreds of thousands of times.
[4:36] Normally, when you see a ton of backlinks
from a single referring domain, it means that
[4:41] they’re sitewide links.
[4:43] If we click the number of backlinks from informationweek.com,
[4:46] you can see all of the pages, some key metrics,
[4:48] and the anchor/backlink that was created.
[4:51] And right away, we can tell that this is a
sitewide link without even clicking through
[4:55] to a page since the anchor text and the backlink
URL are all the same.
[5:01] Finally is this cool search filter.
[5:02] You can just type in a domain and see if it’s
linking to the target website or URL.
[5:07] So I’ll type in Ahrefs.com and you’ll
see that we have linked to CMI 11 times.
[5:13] And if we click on the number of backlinks
we've created for them, you can get more details
[5:17] on where the backlinks are coming from and
where they are pointing.
[5:21] With a website as popular as Content Marketing
Institute, that has a good number of backlinks
[5:26] and referring domains, it’s tough to get
a ton of value here.
[5:30] But I’ll finish off by showing you how easy
it is to filter through small websites using
[5:35] the Referring Domains report.
[5:36] So I’m going to enter in a very unpopular
domain in Site Explorer, moneyjournal.com,
[5:42] ya, it’s mine.
[5:44] Now, I’ll click on the referring
domains report in the left sidebar.
[5:48] Then I’ll filter it down to just the dofollow links.
[5:51] And you can see that there are a few decent
links in here from some high DR websites which
[5:56] tells us that I’m not blatantly using any
shady link building tactics.
[6:00] And we can click on this number here beside
entrepreneur.com, which again, will show me
[6:04] some more details on the backlinks and linking pages.
[6:08] So, I could even reach out to these people
to start building a relationship
[6:11] with them, right?
[6:12] Now, I’ll open this one up in a new tab.
[6:16] Oh… it’s just me…
[6:20] But you get the point.
[6:21] With smaller websites, you can quickly use
the referring domains report to see whether
[6:25] a website’s link building strategies are
legit and worth replicating, or if you should
[6:30] just move on to your next backlink analysis.
[6:33] That’s it for part one of our backlink analysis
and link building series.

[6:48] on to part two, where we’ll be taking this
backlink analysis a step deeper and getting
[6:53] into some actionable insights.
[6:54] I’ll see you in the next video.
