[0:00] This survival blog is worth six figures
[0:02] and was built by one guy with zero
[0:04] marketing experience. And he's even
[0:05] outranking Reddit and Amazon on Google.
[0:07] And when the world looks like it's
[0:09] falling apart, traffic to his site
[0:10] doesn't just rise, it explodes. In this
[0:14] video, I'm breaking down how he's using
[0:15] SEO to beat billiondoll companies, how
[0:18] much money he's really making, and how
[0:20] you can steal his playbook even if
[0:22] you're starting from scratch. But first,
[0:24] let's see what the site actually looks
[0:26] like.
[0:28] So yeah, site looks like a typical blog
[0:32] kind of like from the mid 2000s, like
[0:36] 2015, 2016. The theme looks like a free
[0:39] one. So here is our founder and lead
[0:42] writer, Sean Gold. Let's check him out
[0:45] on LinkedIn. Yeah. And here's his US Air
[0:48] Force Reserve experience. He was an
[0:50] emergency manager there, a hazmat
[0:53] technician, a degree in emergency
[0:55] management. So, emergencies, disasters,
[0:57] and survival situations. Yeah, if the
[0:59] world was ending tomorrow, this is the
[1:01] guy that I want to call.
[1:03] Hello. The threat list. What's this?
[1:06] Holy crap. Look how long this thing is,
[1:10] man. Wa. This is a massive guide. Yeah,
[1:14] I'm really impressed. Like, look, this
[1:16] is him. This is a great site. While most
[1:19] affiliate sites recycle product blurbs,
[1:21] Shawn's in the field testing, reviewing,
[1:24] and actually using this gear. Even with
[1:26] content like a threat list, which barely
[1:28] has any search volume, he goes all out
[1:30] because every piece he publishes gets
[1:32] the same 100% effort. From the homepage,
[1:35] it looks like a hobby blog, but it ranks
[1:37] like a publishing empire. So, I popped
[1:40] it into HFS to see what was really going
[1:42] on. Wow, he's getting like
[1:44] 37,000 monthly organics. That's pretty
[1:47] impressive. has like a traffic value of
[1:49] $11,000 per month. Based on these
[1:52] numbers alone, we would take
[1:54] $11,200, multiply it by 12, and we end
[1:56] up with like
[1:59] $130,000. From the very short time that
[2:01] I've actually looked at his site, I
[2:03] don't think he's making that much. I
[2:05] guess he's making between like $50,000
[2:08] to $70,000 per year. This traffic trend
[2:11] is really interesting here cuz like he
[2:13] said it started in 2016. Yeah. And we
[2:15] start seeing some traffic build up here.
[2:18] Oh, and then check this out. Boom. March
[2:20] 2020. Remember what happened then? We
[2:23] see a big spike in traffic there.
[2:24] Interesting. Another spike there. It's
[2:27] very spiky this traffic. And it doesn't
[2:29] seem like he's like an SEO pro or
[2:31] anything like that or even doing SEO
[2:33] actively. All right. So, let's see what
[2:35] kind of keywords he's ranking for. Uh, I
[2:37] don't want to compare the data so much
[2:39] right now. I just want to see what he's
[2:40] ranking for right now today. Right here.
[2:42] Best gas can. Wow. Oh, he's outranking
[2:45] Reddit and Amazon. Yeah. So, he's
[2:48] basically like ranking for a lot of
[2:50] these like best type products for like
[2:53] super super like niche stuff. Ranking
[2:56] number three for that, number one for
[2:57] this. Like this is super niche. Like, is
[2:59] he actually buying all this stuff and
[3:01] testing it? Looks like it. Man, this
[3:04] guy's opening it up and like there it is
[3:07] of him holding it. This is like
[3:09] affiliate site done right. I I hope he's
[3:12] killing it. Best powdered eggs. Look,
[3:16] best powdered milk. So, he's just going
[3:19] after all these like best of terms. And
[3:21] then it's got affiliate links to Amazon.
[3:24] Amazon. Another affiliate link to
[3:26] Amazon. Yeah. Okay. So, that's basically
[3:28] his strategy. Sean's targeting best of
[3:31] keywords, which are perfect for adding
[3:32] affiliate links to Amazon because the
[3:34] searcher wants product recommendations
[3:36] and he's not chasing big search volume
[3:38] keywords. He's targeting low competition
[3:40] ones that his audience wants and that he
[3:43] can actually rank for and the results
[3:45] are compounding. That's exactly how
[3:47] small site should start. Compete in your
[3:49] own weight class. Yeah. Let's actually
[3:51] find out what was happening here with
[3:52] all these spikes. So, this was the co
[3:57] something happened here in March 2020.
[4:00] Go away green. What is this thing? He
[4:03] got a huge spike in traffic from this.
[4:06] Is this when he did it? Oh, no. He's had
[4:08] it forever. Yeah, the post came out in
[4:10] 2017, but it never really gained
[4:12] traction. So, if we go and just put that
[4:15] one in here. Let's look at Yeah, he
[4:18] didn't really get traffic until much
[4:20] later. This might have just been like a
[4:21] trendy keyword, was it? Let's look it up
[4:24] in Keywords Explorer. Yeah. Okay. Okay.
[4:27] Check this out. April 2021. It had
[4:30] 91,000 searches. That's crazy. Whether
[4:34] he's doing it on purpose or not, Shawn
[4:37] is ranking for keywords that get massive
[4:40] search volume when certain events happen
[4:42] and and when they do, tens of thousands
[4:46] of people end up on a site. Now,
[4:48] depending on your niche, this can
[4:50] potentially be a huge opportunity
[4:52] because people don't put that much
[4:54] effort into optimizing for non evergreen
[4:57] topics. It's the same idea with seasonal
[4:59] topics like a blog post on gardening
[5:01] tips. there's going to be a huge spike
[5:03] probably in like April and May and then
[5:05] it's going to completely die down. And
[5:07] this is going to happen every single
[5:08] year. So, a key to ranking for these
[5:11] queries is going to be to prepare well
[5:13] before the wave actually hits with 10x
[5:16] content. And this is going to make it so
[5:18] much harder for your competitors to
[5:19] actually catch you. And a cool way that
[5:22] you can actually spot these seasonal or
[5:24] eventdriven type trends is to use HF's
[5:27] keywords explorer. Just enter a seed
[5:29] keyword, go to the matching terms
[5:31] report, and then scan the spark line
[5:33] charts to look for recurring spikes in
[5:36] searches or just oneoff big spikes,
[5:38] which you can then investigate further.
[5:40] And you're going to find that these are
[5:41] often lower competition, too, which is a
[5:43] bonus. As I kept digging through his
[5:46] site, I started to notice a pattern with
[5:47] these traffic spikes. And then it
[5:49] occurred to me that they might not be so
[5:52] random. Maybe they were tied to
[5:54] something bigger.
[5:56] Okay, so call me crazy, but I think some
[5:59] of these spikes actually line up with
[6:02] major world events, stuff like natural
[6:04] disasters or wars, that kind of stuff.
[6:07] All right, so this spike right here,
[6:09] that was during the violence in Myanmar.
[6:12] And here there was tons of unrest like
[6:14] bombings, suicide attacks. Then here
[6:18] you've got extreme weather, floods,
[6:21] hurricanes, and wildfires around. And
[6:23] now 2025.
[6:26] M yeah, we're not in a good place. But
[6:28] ranking is only half the equation. Shawn
[6:31] figured out how to monetize that
[6:33] traffic, and I'd say he did a pretty
[6:35] solid job because according to LinkedIn,
[6:38] he left his 10-year job and went
[6:40] full-time self-employed in 2024, which
[6:44] just so happens to be right around the
[6:46] time True Prepper went parabolic. So,
[6:49] yeah, I guess you could say Shawn struck
[6:52] gold.
[6:55] Okay, so how exactly is this site making
[6:57] money? Let's dig in. Okay, the most
[7:00] obvious thing is affiliate links. So,
[7:03] this one here goes to an affiliate
[7:05] network. Let's open them. Let's see.
[7:09] 511tactical.com, right? Uh affiliate
[7:12] commission. How much did they pay? How
[7:14] much do they pay? Oh, here it is. 6% per
[7:17] sale. Amazon would give you 3% on the on
[7:20] the outdoor category. 6%. That's
[7:23] actually decent. All right. So, that's a
[7:27] an affiliate link to Amazon. Link ID
[7:30] tag. Yep. So, that's definitely an
[7:32] affiliate link. Clothing.
[7:34] Amazon. Amazon. Amazon. I don't know
[7:37] why, but the feeling that I get is that
[7:39] this isn't just like a list of random
[7:42] stuff that's added here, but it's
[7:44] actually a lot of thought and care.
[7:46] Like, jeez, look how massive this bugout
[7:49] bag checklist is. Yeah, this guy's cool.
[7:51] like he's really committed to his work.
[7:53] Wow. Win a get home bag kit. He had
[7:58] 29,000 entries. He's actually giving
[8:01] stuff away. He's probably doing that to
[8:02] build his email list. I think he could
[8:04] be making six figures like easily based
[8:08] on what I'm seeing here. But yeah, in
[8:10] terms of monetization, all I see are
[8:13] affiliate links. I think there needs to
[8:15] be more. True Prepper's monetization
[8:17] strategy is simple. He ranks for high
[8:19] intense survival keywords like best
[8:21] freeze dryer. And when thousands of
[8:24] people Google that each month, they land
[8:26] on his site, read his guides, click on
[8:28] the gear he recommends, and when they
[8:30] buy, he earns a commission. It's stupid
[8:33] simple, and it works way better than
[8:35] you'd expect. True Prepper is clearly
[8:37] doing a lot right, but after an hour
[8:40] inside the site, I couldn't help but map
[8:42] out exactly how I'd grow it if I took
[8:44] over today. Okay, so gears are turning
[8:47] and I'm starting to see a few things
[8:48] that could easily double the site's
[8:50] traffic and revenue. Right now, the only
[8:52] monetization I see are affiliate links
[8:55] and those only pay when someone clicks
[8:57] and buys. So, the first thing that I do
[9:01] is to add display ads, ideally through
[9:03] Mediavine since it typically pays better
[9:05] than AdSense. All you got to do is just
[9:07] sign up for an account, install their
[9:09] code snippet on your site, and you're
[9:10] ready to roll. That way, you're getting
[9:12] paid for every page view, not just ones
[9:14] that convert. And it doesn't have to
[9:16] look like a spammy recipe blog. Display
[9:20] ads can actually be clean, classy, and
[9:22] unobtrusive. So, if I had to guess, True
[9:24] Prepper is probably getting around
[9:26] 75,000 page views a month. And if we
[9:29] assume a 20 to $25 RPM, that's $1,500 to
[9:33] $2,000 a month in extra revenue for like
[9:36] 10 minutes of work. That's not bad. Now,
[9:38] since we be getting paid for every page
[9:41] view, the goal becomes simple. We just
[9:43] got to get more page views. And the best
[9:45] way to do that consistently is by
[9:48] repeating what's already working for the
[9:49] site, which is SEO. And I'd start with
[9:51] this. I would ask Chad GPT to give me 20
[9:55] seed keywords in the survival and
[9:57] prepping niche. Then drop those into
[9:58] HF's keywords explorer. Filter for
[10:01] affiliate style terms like versus,
[10:03] review, and best. and bang bang,
[10:06] thousands of high intent keywords, many
[10:08] of which are low competition ready to
[10:10] go. But I wouldn't stop at just
[10:13] affiliate terms because if we're running
[10:15] display ads, informational content is
[10:18] going to print money, too. All while
[10:20] attracting our target audience. I'd run
[10:22] true prepper through site explorer, hit
[10:24] the organic competitors report, pick two
[10:26] or three relevant prepper sites like
[10:28] this one and this one, and then drop
[10:30] them into content gap tool. And in
[10:33] seconds, we have tons of keywords that
[10:36] our competitors are ranking for where
[10:38] our blog isn't. And here's the coolest
[10:40] thing about doing these things in this
[10:42] order. Once your traffic goes up, so
[10:45] does your negotiation power with
[10:46] affiliate merchants. Most affiliate
[10:48] programs, they publish like a base
[10:50] commission, but almost all of them are
[10:52] negotiable. And I'm not talking about
[10:54] pocket change. I've seen some affiliate
[10:56] offers go from $50 to $200 per sale just
[11:01] by asking. So, let's say that True
[11:03] Prepper is responsible for around a,000
[11:05] sales at an average order value of $50
[11:07] per month. Through Amazon, he'd make
[11:10] roughly 3% for the outdoor category
[11:12] products for a total of around
[11:15] $1,500. But if he were able to find
[11:17] another reputable e-commerce store that
[11:19] offered 6%, if the clicks and
[11:21] conversions were equal, he double his
[11:24] income. Which is why the next thing I do
[11:26] is diversify affiliate partners away
[11:28] from just Amazon and look at negotiating
[11:32] rates. And you can find tons more
[11:33] affiliate merchants through a network
[11:35] like Commission Junction. A key takeaway
[11:38] here is that traffic isn't just money,
[11:41] it's leverage. Obviously, there are
[11:43] things to consider like how well an
[11:45] affiliate merchant converts because
[11:46] you're paid for sales, not clicks. But
[11:48] I'm not going to go deeper into this
[11:50] because it's all covered in our free
[11:51] affiliate marketing course, which I'll
[11:53] link up in the description. So, True
[11:56] Prepper, this site isn't just about
[11:58] prepping. It's about serving an audience
[12:00] that's interested in a specific niche.
[12:02] And that's done by picking the right
[12:04] keywords through keyword research,
[12:06] creating actually helpful content for
[12:08] that audience, and optimizing it to turn
[12:10] it into a cash flowing machine. And if
[12:13] you want to learn how to grow your site
[12:14] like True Prepper did, watch our free
[12:16] SEO course for beginners right here on
