[0:00] For a long time, people have said that long form content performs better than short form. [0:05] Meaning, write longer content if you want to rank higher in Google. [0:09] But what's long and what's short? [0:13] Hubspot says that long form content is anywhere between 1,000 to 7,500 words. [0:19] Wordstream says anything that's over 1,200 words long. [0:23] And MarketMuse says anywhere between 700 and 2,000 words. [0:28] You see, there's no such thing as an optimal blog post length or a threshold in terms of [0:33] word count. [0:34] I mean, we can't even seem to agree on what long form even means. [0:39] Now, because there's hundreds, maybe even thousands of articles recommending to publish [0:43] long form content for your greatest chance at success, we wanted to put this myth to rest. [0:49] So in this video, we'll put some common misconceptions around blog post length [0:53] to rest backed by an analysis of 900 million pages of content. [0:58] Stay tuned. [0:58] [music] [1:03] Now, on the surface, there are 2 logical reasons why people think that longer content performs [1:08] better than short content. [1:10] Reason #1 is that longer content leads to more backlinks. [1:15] And this seems logical because the more content you have, the more potential [1:19] linkworthy points there'll be. [1:21] But our analysis of 900 million pages doesn't exactly support this theory. [1:27] We found a clear positive correlation between word count and referring domains for content [1:31] that's up to 1,000 words long. [1:34] But if we zoom out, you'll actually see that there's a strong negative correlation between [1:39] backlinks and word count for content over 1,000 words. [1:44] Now, our theory is that the correlation partly comes down to a balance between thoroughness [1:49] and succinctness. [1:51] People generally don't read full blog posts. [1:54] So if your guide is 20,000 words long, then the most important points that people might [1:59] reference are likely to be buried in your content. [2:02] And if people aren't reading your content, you won't be getting links. [2:07] Now, the second thing that many people believe is that longer content gets more organic traffic. [2:13] Again, this makes sense at face value because longer content, assuming it's not filled with fluff, [2:18] will include more subtopics which may lead to more organic keyword rankings. [2:23] And our data supports this. [2:25] There was moderate positive correlation between word count and organic traffic. [2:30] But… this is only up to 2,000 words. [2:34] There was actually a moderate negative correlation for content that's longer than 2,000 words. [2:40] So, does this mean that you should write content that's up to 1,000 words to get as many backlinks [2:45] as possible? [2:46] And then should you update your content so it's longer but no more than 2,000 words [2:51] so you can rank for more keywords? [2:53] No, and I really hope that wasn't your conclusion. [2:56] As Google's John Mueller said, word count is not a ranking factor. [3:01] So I don't think this is something you should take into consideration when writing your content. [3:07] So how long should a blog post be? [3:09] The answer is "as long as it needs to be to cover the topic in depth." [3:13] This might come off as a bit of an annoying answer, but that's only true if you're still stuck [3:18] in the mentality that blog posts need to be a certain length in order to rank high in Google. [3:24] Fortunately, there are content writing processes that are going to naturally guide you to an optimal [3:30] blog post length. [3:31] And we have a full video on content writing for SEO, which will walk you through this [3:36] process and come to your "as long as it needs to be" answer. [3:40] I highly recommend watching that video and I'd love to hear your comments on whether [3:43] you think long form content is still the route you should go when writing blog posts. [3:48] I'll see you in the next tutorial.
