[0:03] Hi everyone, Kathryn Aragon here.
[0:06] If you've done much SEO work, you
know how hard it is to rank on page one.
[0:10] One solution, which we've reviewed in previous tutorials, is to research your competitors so you can
[0:15] go after their best keywords and
replicate their high ranking content.
[0:19] But in this video we're going to take a
different route and find some amazing
[0:24] keyword opportunities that your
competitors might not even know about yet.
[0:28] In particular, let's look at a
process for finding some easy keywords
[0:32] that you can potentially rank for within a month or two.
[0:37] Step 1: finding tons of great keyword ideas.
[0:40] For this, we'll use Ahrefs' powerful Keywords Explorer.
[0:44] This tool runs on a massively large database of
about 3 billion keywords, which is
[0:50] updated with fresh keywords every month.
[0:53] That's something no other tool can match.
[0:54] So let's look at how you can do it.
[0:57] To begin, we'll enter one or two
top-level terms related to your website.
[1:02] For example, let's use 'backpack'
and 'backpacks', then click explore.
[1:07] Scroll down and you'll see a section with keyword ideas.
[1:10] Let's focus on the first list, 'having same terms.'
[1:14] Above the list, we tell you how many
[1:16] keyword suggestions there are in this list;
in this case, well above 200,000.
[1:21] Click to view the full report and you'll
see the list ordered by search volume.
[1:25] Remember, this number tells you how
many times people search for the
[1:29] keyword in Google each month in your
chosen country and notice also how
[1:33] relevant this list is, since all the keywords
have your original search terms in them
[1:38] either backpack or backpacks.
[1:40] Step two: finding the best keyword opportunities for you.
[1:44] With such a huge list to sort through, you need some
[1:47] metrics to help you find your
best keyword opportunities.
[1:50] Search volume is one of the first things you'll look at.
[1:53] The second is another interesting metric,
[1:55] KD, or keyword difficulty. It's an
estimate of how hard it will be to rank
[2:00] for this keyword based on the number of
backlinks the top 10 ranking pages have.
[2:06] When you first open the report, the
keyword difficulty scores will be grayed out.
[2:10] The number you see here is the one we have in cache.
[2:13] To refresh it, click on the get metrics button.
[2:16] This gives you our most current data.
[2:19] As you can see, you can push several buttons at the same time and just wait while it's being refreshed.
[2:25] Once it's updated, the color changes,
so you can see at a glance that
[2:29] the difficulty score is fresh.
[2:31] The color also gives you an idea
of how hard it will be to rank for this keyword.
[2:35] It ranges from red to bright green,
with red meaning it will be very hard.
[2:41] Green means it could be relatively
easy if you do some link building work.
[2:46] Under each term, we also give
you a few icons to show you
[2:49] what people see in the search engine
results pages. For instance, this one has
[2:54] shopping, an ad, site links, and an image.
[2:58] And if we put this keyword into
Google, you can see them.
[3:02] Here are the search results for 'JanSport backpacks.'
[3:06] Just like the icons indicated, we have shopping an
ad, site links and images.
[3:13] Notice that all of these features take up room on page
one of the search results, which means
[3:18] people have to scroll further to see the
organic search results; even the top three results.
[3:23] And they may not actually click on any of them,
but we'll talk more about that in a minute.
[3:30] For this demo, let's take 'waterproof backpack'.
[3:33] First, I'll refresh the metrics.
[3:36] Then we'll open it in a new tab and look
at the overview page for the keyword.
[3:41] Once we do this, we're ready for step 3:
[3:45] researching the number of referring domains you need.
[3:48] At the top of this page, you can see
the keyword difficulty score for this term.
[3:52] Remember, this is a score from 0 to 100 that indicates
[3:56] how hard it will be to rank for the term.
[3:58] And below the score, you have a hint that tells
you how many backlinks you'll need to rank
[4:03] in the top 10 for this keyword. For this
keyword, the keyword difficulty is very low.
[4:08] Let's scroll down to the search
engine results page overview and see why.
[4:13] Here, you can see all the top ranking pages at a glance.
[4:17] Under referring domains, notice that most
have low numbers, so you won't need a lot
[4:23] of backlinks to compete with these
pages and rank well for this keyword.
[4:28] Based on this information, it looks like this
keyword could be a good opportunity
[4:32] since it has a relatively high search
volume and a low keyword difficulty score.
[4:37] But there's one more metric we
need to look at to be sure.
[4:41] Step 4: reviewing clicks and clicks per search.
[4:45] Traditionally, we use search volume to determine
[4:48] how much traffic a keyword could send
your page, if you rank well for this keyword.
[4:52] But just because people search for a term,
[4:55] it doesn't mean they click on the results.
[4:57] That's why we developed the 'clicks' metric.
[5:00] This is something that only Ahrefs shows you.
[5:03] No other tool tracks clicks and gives you
[5:05] this kind of depth for researching keywords,
at least at the time of this video tutorial.
[5:10] It's likely, they'll add this functionality
once they see how useful it is.
[5:15] And here's why:
[5:16] You can use this metric to confirm that a keyword doesn't just have a high search volume,
[5:21] but can actually send traffic to your page.
[5:24] Let's look at two search terms
to show you what we mean.
[5:28] First, let's look at 'Donald Trump age.'
[5:31] Notice that even though the
search volume for this term is high,
[5:34] the number of clicks is very low.
[5:37] Let's take it into Google to see why.
[5:40] Some search queries, like this one are
made when people want a quick answer.
[5:45] So Google gives it to them at the top of
the page in a knowledge card.
[5:49] For a keyword like this one, even the top 10
pages don't get many clicks.
[5:53] You can see that reflected in the 'clicks per search'
number, which represents the number of
[5:58] clicks divided by search volume.
[6:00] And as you can see, it's way below 1, which means
[6:04] that only a fraction of the searches results in a click.
[6:07] Now let's look at 'iPhone 7 case'.
[6:10] For this keyword, clicks are
higher than the search volume,
[6:14] even though only 70% of searches
seem to be resulting in clicks.
[6:19] And if you divide the number of clicks by
the search volume, you get a 'clicks per search'
[6:23] number that's greater than 1.
[6:25] Any time this number is higher than 1, it means
[6:28] people tend to click multiple pages
when they search for this keyword.
[6:32] And that's a good thing because
even if you rank below number one, you
[6:37] could still get a lot of traffic.
[6:39] As a result, this term is definitely worth targeting.
[6:42] Can you see how valuable this
metric is?
[6:45] Instead of finding keywords with high search volume
[6:48] and assuming they'll send you a lot of traffic, you
[6:51] can verify that the term actually gets
clicked in the search engine results, so
[6:55] you know for sure how much traffic you can get from it.
[6:58] So let's review.
[7:00] In Keywords Explorer, enter one or two
top-level keywords that relate to your niche.
[7:05] This will give you a huge list of potential keywords.
[7:08] Start by looking at the search volume
[7:10] because this is the basic metric
we show for all keywords at once.
[7:15] And it's easy to order or filter your results by it.
[7:18] Same with the keyword difficulty score.
[7:20] It's already cached for the best
keywords in our database, so you
[7:24] can order and filter by it, use it to
know how much link building work it will
[7:28] take to rank in the top 10 for that keyword.
[7:31] Then, once you see some potentially cool keywords based on search volume and keyboard difficulty,
[7:37] it's time to pull their advanced metrics
to make a more educated decision.
[7:42] For that, look at the 'clicks' metric.
[7:44] The idea is to review these numbers
for several keywords at once.
[7:48] Then select the keywords you like and
[7:50] add them to a list for future optimization.
[7:54] In this video, we're only scratching the surface of the
[7:57] advanced keyword research you can
perform with the Keywords Explorer tool.
[8:01] There are many other features and
metrics that we didn't cover, but we'll
[8:05] explain everything in future tutorials.
[8:08] We'll also give you some ideas on how to
[8:10] create high value pages for the keywords
you choose, so you can rank higher and
[8:14] get more search traffic to your site.
[8:17] In the meantime, add 'clicks' to the search metrics
[8:20] you review when picking your best
keyword opportunities and create a
[8:24] list of the easy keywords that you can
possibly rank for in just a few months.
