[0:00] If your traffic is 70% in Google, we've
[0:03] seen people's businesses get wiped out
[0:05] before. Do you really think that
[0:07] efficient app is immune to these kinds
[0:09] of updates? Um, I would personally be
[0:12] looking to exit.
[0:17] Meet Alex and Andra, a husband and wife
[0:19] team running a software review site
[0:21] built on the backbone of Google search
[0:23] traffic. But when Google's algorithm
[0:25] starts wiping competitors off the map,
[0:27] you've got to wonder, are they next? But
[0:30] they have a sneaky edge. Authenticity.
[0:32] So our tagline is no software
[0:35] reviews because we want to be straight
[0:36] up. We've been consulting for a decade.
[0:38] We are just giving the same advice that
[0:40] we would give to a customer or friend in
[0:42] written and video format. How many
[0:44] visitors do you get from Google versus
[0:46] YouTube percentage- wise? We're around
[0:48] 70%
[0:49] like Google organic, maybe 30% YouTube.
[0:52] And how much money are you making from
[0:54] the site as a whole? When we were
[0:56] consulting, we were doing around 400k in
[0:58] revenue and we've managed to double that
[1:01] with the new business model. They're
[1:03] making over $800,000 a year, but what
[1:06] they don't know is their site might be
[1:08] at serious risk. I'm here to show them
[1:10] the red flags and how they can avoid the
[1:12] same mistakes that have wiped out
[1:13] countless businesses that have relied
[1:15] too heavily on Google. Let's get into
[1:18] it. Obviously, traffic is very
[1:20] impressive, especially in this niche
[1:21] being very competitive. Your traffic
[1:24] value is even more impressive. So,
[1:26] traffic value is the amount of money it
[1:29] would cost to get this traffic if you're
[1:31] paying in Google Ads. I'm curious, what
[1:33] do you think is the main reason for the
[1:36] success of your site? Programmatic SEO.
[1:38] Programmatic SEO is when you use
[1:40] templates to automatically generate
[1:42] pages at scale. Efficient app has
[1:44] created a way to automatically create
[1:46] versus pages to compare various tools
[1:49] like help scout versus zendesk. My
[1:52] thought is that Google views us more
[1:54] properly versus just a blog. We are
[1:57] actually putting a lot of intent around
[1:59] the structure of our site. But after
[2:01] digging into their site, it was clear to
[2:03] me that programmatic SEO wasn't the main
[2:05] reason behind their explosive growth in
[2:07] organic traffic. What was driving it?
[2:10] They had no idea. Your content is very
[2:13] well written. The effort that you put in
[2:14] your YouTube videos is apparent. But can
[2:17] I Yeah. Can I be honest? Like I feel
[2:20] like you know more than we do. So Okay.
[2:23] So in my opinion, much of the success
[2:27] comes down to a domain that you
[2:28] acquired. Okay. And you're now
[2:32] redirecting to your domain. Do you know
[2:34] which domain I'm talking about?
[2:36] Companies.tools. Companies. The
[2:38] companies. Domain came with a gold mine
[2:40] of backlinks. links from huge sites like
[2:43] Zapier, New York Post, Web Flow, and
[2:46] hundreds more. And in Google's eyes,
[2:48] backlinks are like votes of trust. In
[2:51] general, the more you have from credible
[2:52] sites, the higher you rank. But here's
[2:54] where it gets smart. Instead of just
[2:56] redirecting the old site to their
[2:58] homepage, Alex pointed those links
[3:00] straight into one of their most
[3:01] important pages, the stacks page, giving
[3:04] it a boost in authority. From there,
[3:06] that boost spreads across the site
[3:08] through links to their other key pages.
[3:10] And for backlinks that were pointing to
[3:12] specific tool pages like this one, Alex
[3:15] redirected them straight to the matching
[3:17] page on a fish app. Sure, landing on a
[3:20] domain like this might involve some
[3:22] luck, but how they used it, that was
[3:24] pure strategy. And the price they paid
[3:27] honestly blew me away. I'm going to show
[3:30] you something cool. So, you made the
[3:33] redirects around here, right? according
[3:36] to Href's 2,830 monthly organics. And
[3:39] when you made that those redirects, you
[3:41] start getting exponential growth. Like
[3:43] it looks like a meme stock, but it's not
[3:45] going down, right? You've done the site
[3:48] structure well, you ramped up your
[3:49] content. Uh the link profile basically
[3:52] gave what you had fuel.
[3:55] And so as soon as those redirects came
[3:57] in, it's just like and so like you know,
[4:00] Google saying things like, "Oh, links
[4:02] don't matter as much." Proof is in the
[4:03] pudding, right? As we see here,
[4:05] redirects made, bang, bang, bang, bang,
[4:07] bang, bang, bang. And all of a sudden,
[4:09] you get this kind of traffic. And
[4:11] because of things like your internal
[4:13] linking structure, having great links,
[4:14] there's a very clear correlation from
[4:16] the day that you made those redirects to
[4:19] when you started to get traffic growth.
[4:21] Little bit of luck on that side, which
[4:23] is great. I would never reject luck.
[4:25] Well done. It was all in the plan. How
[4:29] much money were you making from the site
[4:31] before you acquired that domain? Maybe
[4:33] like seven grand a month. Six grand a
[4:36] month. How much did you buy it for?
[4:39] Three and a half. $3,500.
[4:42] Okay. You paid three and a half for it.
[4:44] You are making roughly seven. So you
[4:47] have effectively 10x your monthly
[4:50] revenue from that one acquisition. I
[4:52] want a $3,500 acquisition like that. But
[4:55] when I looked closer, I saw something I
[4:57] couldn't ignore. Yeah, the growth was
[5:00] impressive, but it was starting to
[5:01] flatline. And anytime I see a curve like
[5:04] this, I get nervous because I've seen
[5:07] how the story ends. A small creator
[5:10] builds a life-changing site, traffic
[5:12] takes off, and then one Google update,
[5:15] poof, wipes it all out. And unless
[5:17] something changes, I was afraid Alex and
[5:20] Andra might be next on Google's hit
[5:22] list. So, I pulled up their top pages,
[5:24] and that's when things started to make
[5:26] sense, and not in a good way. Let's take
[5:28] a look at what you've done here. very
[5:30] impressive traffic growth up to here and
[5:33] now we're kind of stagnating right is
[5:36] we're kind of doing this thing and I
[5:39] don't know how much longer this is going
[5:40] to go on for. I don't know if it's going
[5:41] to go up next or I don't know if it's
[5:42] going to go down next. No one knows. So
[5:44] I want to show you the top pages report
[5:46] and we see that your top pages for
[5:49] browsers and that that's 41% of your
[5:51] organic traffic. Yeah. Right. 41%. And
[5:54] even if this page doesn't drive direct
[5:56] revenue, it's still bringing people to
[5:58] your site. Some of those people will go
[6:00] and explore and 41% is a lot. Yeah.
[6:03] Yeah. And then we start seeing some of
[6:05] your commercial stuff here. So best
[6:08] scheduler 7.4%. 7.2%.
[6:11] Six basically 7% your top six pages
[6:15] account for roughly 70% of your organic
[6:18] traffic. So if you lose traffic to one
[6:20] of those pages, that's a lot of traffic
[6:22] that you're losing. Yeah. I'm going to
[6:24] show you something else. And I'm sure
[6:25] you've already seen these before. G2,
[6:28] one of the biggest sites, also had that
[6:29] parabolic type growth and they kind of
[6:31] had that stagnating growth up, down
[6:34] August 2023, nobody saw it coming. Huge
[6:37] mega site goes from 3.8 million monthly
[6:39] organics down to 592,000. They are back
[6:43] down to basically June 2019 levels.
[6:47] They just lost like 5 years in traffic
[6:51] from from where they grew to Capterra.
[6:54] Same idea. They lost all their traffic
[6:56] too, but this time May 2024.
[7:00] Do you really think that efficient app
[7:02] is immune to these kinds of updates? If
[7:05] it can happen to the two largest players
[7:07] where we've seen large sites taking over
[7:10] SERs,
[7:11] are you guys immune? I don't think we've
[7:13] ever thought we're immune. Like I don't
[7:15] think we've ever thought that we figured
[7:17] out Google. I think we always just think
[7:20] about is this content helpful? Would I
[7:22] like to read it? And if we lose all of
[7:25] our traffic, I would start asking
[7:27] ourselves questions. And I've tried to
[7:30] reverse engineer it to to get back with
[7:34] creating more useful content. But here's
[7:36] the thing. Helpful content is in the eye
[7:38] of the beholder. And when the beholder
[7:40] is Google's algorithm, all bets are off.
[7:42] We've seen it with the helpful content
[7:43] update. Sites doing everything right
[7:46] still wiped out overnight. Because the
[7:48] hard truth is, it's not just about good
[7:51] content. So, taking advice directly from
[7:53] their playbook, I told them exactly what
[7:56] I'd tell a friend if they asked for my
[7:58] advice. Given the circumstances of
[8:01] what's happened to the biggest players
[8:02] in the space, I would personally be
[8:05] looking to exit. If your traffic is 70%
[8:08] in Google, we've seen what happens.
[8:11] We've seen people's businesses get wiped
[8:13] out before. Is there a number that you
[8:15] have in mind that would actually make
[8:17] you think about it?
[8:20] Yeah, I think we still feel like this is
[8:22] just the beginning. I like to think of
[8:24] decisions of like if I got to my
[8:25] deathbed, how would I feel about this?
[8:27] And if I sold just because I was fearful
[8:30] that we would lose everything, I would
[8:31] not feel congruent with that. This was
[8:33] the moment it clicked. Alex and Andra
[8:36] weren't just building a site to make
[8:37] money. They genuinely love software.
[8:40] They care about helping people pick the
[8:42] right tools. And once I realized that,
[8:45] my mindset shifted. My goal wasn't just
[8:47] to help them survive a Google update. It
[8:49] was to help them build something that
[8:51] lasts, something that's algorithm proof.
[8:54] So, we started talking about how to take
[8:55] some risk off the table and how to
[8:57] futureproof their business. So,
[8:59] basically, when I'm looking at how to
[9:00] grow traffic, the first thing I do is I
[9:03] look at what's working for us now and
[9:06] how do we do more of that. So, if we
[9:07] look at your top pages report, your top
[9:10] pages, the ones sending you the most
[9:11] traffic are all your best of pages.
[9:13] Best, best, best, best best. So, let's
[9:16] see here. Let's see how many of these
[9:18] best pages you have that are ranking in
[9:21] the top 100. So, 76 pages. And we can
[9:25] kind of see here in the traffic chart
[9:27] that this is the majority of your
[9:30] traffic, if not all of it. So, I would
[9:33] be looking to split this up even more.
[9:35] So, like let's assume that best browsers
[9:37] goes to zero for whatever reason. I
[9:39] would be looking at how do I get more
[9:41] best of listicles to rank like this. So
[9:44] how do we find topics like that? Keyword
[9:46] research, right? The place that I would
[9:48] start is in chat GBT and I'd say give me
[9:50] a list of categories that a software
[9:51] review site might write about. So for
[9:54] example, CRM, SEO tool, project
[9:56] management, and you end up with this
[9:58] huge list of seed keywords is basically
[10:01] what they are. And so I'm going to just
[10:03] take this list and I'll take it to
[10:06] keywords explorer. And if we just kind
[10:09] of paste these in here and go to the
[10:11] matching terms report. So what we're
[10:13] going to do is we're going to narrow
[10:14] this down to just keywords that include
[10:16] the word best. So we know that that's
[10:19] going to surface a bunch of listicles.
[10:21] So we're looking here. Have you created
[10:23] something on best AI chatbot? No.
[10:26] Apparently no competition. The whole
[10:28] point of this is that we want to take
[10:30] risk off. This all works for SEO. This
[10:32] all works for Google. But I would love
[10:34] to see you guys just continue to
[10:36] diversify beyond Google. So, we know
[10:38] that you're doing YouTube. We have a
[10:39] 7030 split roughly in traffic and
[10:41] revenue. But to go even further, so have
[10:45] you tried LinkedIn? Gosh, no, we have
[10:47] not. Not properly. So, my natural
[10:50] thought is you're selling B2B software.
[10:52] Yeah, it's on LinkedIn. Most people in
[10:55] SEO focus on ranking in Google, but what
[10:58] if the traffic isn't going to individual
[11:00] websites at all? You see, a core
[11:02] fundamental of marketing is to show up
[11:04] where your audience already spends time.
[11:06] And what I was about to show them was a
[11:08] perfect example of that. So we have here
[11:11] these best of keywords of random
[11:14] softwares. So let's copy all of them.
[11:16] Let's go back to keywords explorer and
[11:17] paste all these in there. And I'm going
[11:19] to go to the traffic share by domains
[11:20] report. So it's going to show us which
[11:22] websites are eating up most of that
[11:24] traffic. Reddit is by far number one.
[11:27] You'd think that it'd be some software
[11:29] review site. No, it's Reddit. Is taking
[11:31] 22% of the traffic for these keywords.
[11:33] Why not go and post on Reddit? A way
[11:36] that you can do that actually is just
[11:38] look here. So, of the however many
[11:40] keywords we put in, 49 of those, Reddit
[11:42] is ranking high. So, go here, click
[11:46] through, and go write your response here
[11:48] because we know that they're getting
[11:49] consistent traffic. Okay, that's fair,
[11:51] right? So, now you're working a little
[11:52] smarter. You're not going through Reddit
[11:54] and searching for CRM. You know which
[11:56] pages are ranking that are getting
[11:58] consistent traffic from Google. It's a
[12:00] super simple way to get exposure.
[12:02] Diversifying where your traffic comes
[12:04] from is key to building a strong and
[12:06] resilient online business. The whole
[12:08] goal here is simple, take risk off the
[12:10] table. But then Alex and Andre dropped
[12:13] something on me that can be extremely
[12:15] risky if you don't do it right. Well, we
[12:19] are
[12:21] relaunching our site. We hired engineers
[12:24] to rebuild it from scratch. We'll be
[12:26] rewriting a lot and structuring it
[12:28] differently. And there's just a lot more
[12:29] scalability and giving people better
[12:32] answers. Are are you redesigning or are
[12:34] you migrating? Same domain, same site
[12:36] structure. Now that you're getting
[12:37] traffic, you're you're kind of worried
[12:39] of what could happen. If we're trying to
[12:41] mitigate risk, I would be careful. Yeah.
[12:44] Okay. Like if you're just doing it just
[12:46] cuz you're tired of the look and
[12:48] whatever, I don't think that's a good
[12:51] reason to to do that. So like with more
[12:54] with migrations, the risk is higher. you
[12:55] you really want to pay attention to
[12:57] redirects in the case that you're moving
[12:59] to a different domain, but also internal
[13:01] linking. If you said that you're keeping
[13:02] the same pages,
[13:05] you want to make sure that you know
[13:06] which internal links are on those pages,
[13:08] which might be moving the needle. And
[13:10] you can start making changes after
[13:11] you've done it successfully. If you're
[13:13] going to put this redesign in, I would
[13:17] crawl your site with a site audit and
[13:20] then recrawl it after you've made the
[13:22] changes. And then you can actually
[13:24] compare the changes in site audit. So
[13:26] you can see what's changed. Have
[13:28] internal links been removed from this
[13:29] page? Are we starting to see massive
[13:31] 404s or 500 error somewhere that we just
[13:35] can't see cuz we have too many pages?
[13:37] Redesigning a site that's already
[13:38] getting a ton of valuable traffic is
[13:41] risky. One wrong move, some bad
[13:43] redirects, an unintentional sitewide no
[13:46] index tag, lost internal links, or a
[13:48] hundred other things, and your traffic
[13:50] can vanish overnight. I'm just
[13:52] interested if we're having this
[13:54] conversation a year from now. So much
[13:56] will have changed. A lot will change.
[13:59] That will be interesting to see where
[14:00] we're at in a year. Alex and Andra
[14:03] aren't just running a business. This is
[14:05] personal. They'd rather bet on
[14:07] themselves. Risk it all rather than sell
[14:09] out and walk away not knowing what could
[14:12] have been. All of this can go away
[14:14] tomorrow. And I think this is the
[14:15] unfortunate part of having an SEO
[14:18] business. Him bringing up that
[14:20] acquisition.
[14:21] the magnitude at which he speaks to it
[14:24] is it does actually hit a little bit cuz
[14:26] it feels like we actually have worked
[14:28] really hard
[14:33] it's like I don't feel like that is the
[14:35] thing that has resulted in us finding
[14:38] success in this so it is a weird
[14:41] dichotomy and I guess hearing that be
[14:43] said um and it feel and the hope is that
[14:46] that was not solely the reason I I can I
[14:50] can get behind it being a part of the
[14:53] reason. You could hear it in Alex's
[14:55] voice because when you've spent years
[14:56] pouring everything into something, it's
[14:59] tough to hear that a domain acquisition
[15:01] and some redirects might be seen as the
[15:03] reason for your success. The backlings
[15:06] helped, but that's not the full story.
[15:08] The driving force behind the business
[15:09] was years of effort, obsession, and the
[15:12] relentless focus Alex and Andra have for
[15:14] helping people pick the right software.
[15:16] But the truth is, even with all that
[15:19] hard work, it can still go away
[15:21] tomorrow. That's the reality of building
[15:23] a business that relies on algorithms. No
[15:25] matter the platform, the rules can
[15:27] change overnight. But what no update can
[15:29] take away is how much they care about
[15:31] what they've built. They're not in this
[15:33] just for traffic or even wealth. They're
[15:36] in it because they love software. They
[15:39] love helping people. And since this
[15:40] recording, it looks like their Google
[15:42] traffic is on the rise again. If you
