[0:00] If you want Google’s algorithm to love your site, then create free tools. [0:04] You don’t need coding knowledge and you don’t need a lot of money to make it work. [0:08] Unlike blog posts, free tools inherently contain value at scale and ultimately give Google [0:14] exactly what they want: useful resources for searchers that organically attract backlinks. [0:20] But here’s the thing: no matter how useful your tools are, they won’t reach their full [0:25] traffic potential unless you carefully follow a proven 3-part strategy. [0:30] And this strategy is responsible for possibly two of the greatest organic traffic growth stories ever. [0:36] And it all begins at part 1, choosing the right tools to create. [0:40] Now, it’s important that you choose tool ideas that are a) in demand, and b) relevant to your business. [0:47] And don’t compromise on either list item otherwise part 2 and 3 will be a waste of time. [0:52] Take our keyword generation tool as an example. [0:55] The main query definitely has tons of search demand with roughly 29,000 monthly searches. [1:01] And because it’s basically a free version of our paid tool, Keywords Explorer, [1:06] it’s very relevant to our business. [1:08] So to find a list of tool ideas for your site, start by brainstorming some broad keywords [1:13] related to your niche. [1:14] So if you have a personal finance site, you’d jot down things like credit card, [1:18] retirement, 401k, social security, bank account, and mortgage to name a few. [1:24] Now take that list and paste it into a keyword research tool like Ahrefs Keywords Explorer. [1:29] And then head on over to the Matching terms report. [1:31] And to narrow in on just tool keywords, hit the "Include" box, then the “Any word” tab, [1:36] and type in these exact words: "calculator," "generator," "tool," "checker," "tracker," and "estimator." [1:44] Apply the filter, and just like that, I’ve got over 67,000 tool keywords with over 6 million total [1:51] searches in just the us. [1:53] Now, because a lot of these keywords will have very similar meanings, we need to extract [1:58] just the main tool ideas. [2:00] So at worst, you can manually sift through the keywords to find the unique tool ideas, [2:05] or at best, you can cluster them instantly by using the “Cluster by parent topic” feature [2:10] in Keywords explorer. [2:12] So now those 67,000 keywords have been brought down to 1,500 or so clusters – [2:17] or basically tool ideas. [2:19] Now, you might want to start creating tools right now, but that would be a huge mistake [2:24] because you’d be skipping one of the most important parts of this strategy. [2:28] And that’s planning your tool hub. [2:30] A tool hub is a set of related online tools that are connected to one another. [2:34] And in my opinion, the structure is the x factor to getting these quick vertical traffic graphs. [2:40] I’ll explain that in more detail soon because first, it’s vital that you understand two fundamental steps [2:46] to creating an effective tool hub. [2:48] So step one is to group your tool ideas together. [2:51] To do that, export your list of clusters, clean them up as needed in Sheets, [2:55] and then head on over to ChatGPT and say: [2:58] "Using only this list of keywords, organize them into a hierarchy with "main categories" [3:03] (like "Retirement"), sub categories, and sub-sub categories if needed. [3:07] And I like to see the output in Yaml. [3:09] And step two is to finalize and visualize your structure. [3:13] And this is important to do because it’s going to make sure that your tools are organized in [3:17] a logical structure, maximizing the impacts from part 3 which we’ll get to soon. [3:22] But we need to finish things up in part 2 first – creating these free tools. [3:26] Thanks to AI tools like ChatGPT, you can create just about any simple tools you want [3:32] without coding knowledge or money. [3:34] All you need is the idea and a bit of patience. [3:38] So we already have the ideas in our tree chart, so let’s build out the Roth IRA calculator. [3:43] To start, I’ll Google for my target keyword and I’ll hit up BankRate’s calculator. [3:48] Now, I’m going to make a note of the form fields, the default settings, and the result, [3:52] which I’ll use for testing in a bit. [3:54] So I’m going to open up ChatGPT and say: [3:57] "Create a Roth IRA calculator that calculates compound interest of a time period. [4:02] Use JS and HTML. [4:04] These are the fields and some default values. [4:06] Show me the estimated IRA balance when the retirement age is met." [4:11] And within seconds, our first tool is ready to test and we want it to return the expected [4:16] result that we got from Bankrate. [4:18] To test your tool, go to Jsfiddle.net, paste in the HTML portion here and the JS portion [4:24] here if needed. [4:25] Then hit Run. [4:27] And finally, I’ll hit the Calculate button which should return back the same result [4:31] from our test site. [4:32] And a big time fail! [4:34] Which is why you need to sprinkle in that bit of patience and help ChatGPT solve the problem. [4:39] And after about 10 minutes of doing some math together, we ended up with some successful code. [4:44] Now, you could technically go with this duplicate tool and put it on your site. [4:48] But it’s going to make your job very tough in part 3 so the best thing you can do at [4:53] this point is to find a way to improve on this tool. [4:57] And a great place to find inspiration is Reddit. [5:00] So I’ll search for something like "is there a roth ira calculator with", [5:05] and I’ll narrow the search down to just Reddit. [5:08] And this one looks super interesting. [5:10] The person said: “I’m trying to figure out how much money I should put in [5:14] per month to eventually reach 1 mil.” [5:17] That's brilliant! A reverse roth IRA calculator. [5:20] I’m definitely adding that to our tool. [5:22] Now, after your code is ready you’ve got to put it up on your site. [5:25] So let’s go back to ChatGPT and ask it to combine HTML and JS code into one snippet so I can copy [5:32] and paste it into a WordPress code block. [5:35] Nice. [5:36] Now all we need to do is add a new HTML code block to a WordPress page, paste in our code [5:42] without the additional body tag, and when ready, we’ll preview the page and test it out. [5:48] And everything is in working order. [5:50] Now all there’s left to do in part 2 is to: make your tool look not so terrible using CSS, [5:56] write some copy for your landing page using our SEO copywriting tutorial video, and to build out [6:01] the rest of your tools in your hub. [6:04] And now we have part 1 and part 2 of the strategy completed. [6:07] But it’s impossible for this strategy to be a success without part 3: links. [6:13] Now, backlinks are hyperlinks from one webpage to another website. [6:17] And they are and have been one of Google’s most prominent ranking signals for decades. [6:23] But backlinks impact pages – not websites. [6:26] So if you want to rank 5, 10, or even 50 different tools, then you’ll need to get backlinks to all of [6:32] them, which is no easy task. [6:35] But remember the x factor I was talking about? [6:37] You and I have already done something that’s going to make ranking our pages [6:41] much much much easier. [6:42] And it’s right here. [6:43] Each line here represents a reciprocal internal link. [6:47] And these connections actually help the pages to share the so-called “value” they get from backlinks. [6:53] For example, if my retirement calculator gets a bunch of backlinks, the page becomes more [6:58] ‘authoritative’ in Google’s eyes. [7:00] And that authority helps it to rank higher in Google. [7:03] But there’s also some residual value that’ll be passed to the pages it links to - like these ones. [7:08] And even the ones that go further down the structure, but to a lesser degree. [7:13] So when one page gets backlinks, the whole hub is benefiting, helping all of the tools [7:18] to work together as a team to rank higher in Google and ultimately, get that vertical [7:24] traffic growth that we all want. [7:26] And both Canva and Veed, two of the greatest organic traffic growth stories have meticulously [7:32] created tool hubs growing into the millions of monthly search visits. [7:37] Now, in order for the structure to work its magic, we need to get some backlinks that will help us [7:41] get to the first page of Google. [7:43] And while pretty much any classic link building tactic will work, there's one technique that [7:48] stands out above the rest because of something we did earlier. [7:52] We took the extra time to make our tool better than our competitors. [7:56] And what that does is it gives us a unique angle for outreach when trying to “steal” [8:02] backlinks from inferior tools. [8:04] Let’s put it into action for our roth IRA calculator with the cool reverse roth function. [8:09] I’ll start by going to Google and search for my target keyword. [8:12] And then I’ll copy some of the top URLs to a notepad. [8:15] Next, I’ll paste one of the URLs into Site Explorer and go to the Backlinks Report. [8:20] Now, I’m going to visit these pages and see if there’s a way I can pitch my free tool. [8:24] For example, this page is recommending all sorts of Roth IRA calculators. [8:29] And having done my research, I know that none of them have a reverse Roth IRA function. [8:34] So I’mma email Alvin and tell him about my tool and the cool feature that no one else has. [8:40] And if he digs it, I’ll ask to be included. [8:43] Now, as you get more and more backlinks, you’ll start feeding that hub with link authority. [8:48] And if you do it enough and do it right, you’ll eventually start pushing some of those pages [8:53] to the top of Google’s search results. [8:55] And now here’s the best part of this whole system. [8:58] Once your free tools are ranking high in Google, backlinks will continue to organically come in [9:03] because free tools are inherently useful and people link to useful things. [9:09] And this will only continue to signal to Google that you have a great site with great resources, [9:15] causing them to fall deeper and deeper in love with your site. [9:19] Watch our full case study on how Veed used this exact strategy to get millions [9:22] of monthly visits from search.
