[0:00] SEO in 2020 both has and hasn't changed.
[0:03] Let me explain.
[0:04] In 2019, there were three core algorithm updates.
[0:08] One in March, another in June, and the final
one in September.
[0:11] And do you know what happened in each one
of these updates?
[0:14] Probably not.
[0:15] But I can guarantee you that 99.99% of people
watching this video don't either.
[0:21] And it's not because the updates weren't important.
[0:24] It's because they didn't affect the fundamental
principles of SEO success.
[0:28] So rather than searching for the latest EAT
hack or trying to optimize for BERT, you should
[0:33] focus on the three most important things
that will determine the fate of your rankings.
[0:37] And that's what we're covering in this video today.
[0:39] Stay tuned.
[0:40] [music]
[0:44] Google's algorithm is always changing.
[0:46] But the one thing that hasn't changed
is what the algorithm is trying to do.
[0:52] Google's job is to provide the best search
results for any given query.
[0:56] They need to find pages and rank the ones
that best match and serve the user's intents.
[1:01] And to figure this out, they use hundreds
of different ranking factors.
[1:05] So there's really no point in chasing algorithms.
[1:08] Instead, our job as content creators and marketers is
to show search engines that our pages deserve to rank.
[1:15] And the three things that will determine
whether you rank or not are content,
[1:20] backlinks, and indexation.
[1:22] Let's go through each one of these.
[1:24] First and arguably the most important thing
in SEO is content.
[1:28] No matter how prolific your writing skills are, you
won't rank unless you've gotten your content "right."
[1:34] And by "right," there are a few major things to consider.
[1:38] First is search intent.
[1:40] Search intent means the reason behind
a searcher's query.
[1:42] To figure this out, just do a search in Google
for your target keyword, and look through
[1:46] the titles of the top ranking pages.
[1:49] From these, you should be able to figure out
the three C's of search intent.
[1:53] The first C is content type.
[1:56] Content type can usually be categorized into
blog posts, product, category, and landing pages.
[2:03] The second C is content format.
[2:05] And this applies more to blog posts and landing pages.
[2:08] A few common blog formats you'll see are
"how-tos", step-by-step tutorials, list posts,
[2:13] and opinion editorials.
[2:15] For a landing page, that might be something
like a tool or calculator.
[2:19] And the third C is content angle, which often
depicts the "benefit."
[2:23] It's basically your hook as to why someone
should click through to the page.
[2:27] Search intent today is more important than ever.
[2:29] And if you want to rank high, you'll want to match
the type, format, and angle of other top pages.
[2:36] Second, make sure you've covered the topic in full.
[2:40] This doesn't mean that you have to give every
last detail on the topic.
[2:43] For example, if you're writing about a topic
like "the best headphones," you don't have to
[2:47] mention every single manufacturer and/or model.
[2:51] Instead, look at what the top ranking pages
are talking about.
[2:55] So for "best headphones," you'll see that
TechRadar has organized their post by
[2:59] "best [type] headphones."
[3:01] Like "best in-ear headphones," "best on-ear
headphones," and so on.
[3:06] See the article from Digital Trends, and they've
followed the same or at least very similar format.
[3:12] You can also use Ahrefs' Content Gap tool
to see common keyword rankings
[3:16] among the top 3 to 5 pages.
[3:18] Just enter the top ranking URLs here, which
I've already done and run the search.
[3:24] And now that we can see keywords that the
top pages rank for, we can extract subtopics
[3:28] and create a thorough page to maximize search traffic
[3:32] So I might want to talk about budget headphones
as well as the best portable headphones
[3:36] and categorize my post that way.
[3:39] Finally, make sure you get the on-page stuff down pat.
[3:42] Things like titles, URL slugs, and heading tags are
basic things in on-page SEO, but they're important.
[3:49] Rather than going into the details, I recommend
watching our full on-page SEO checklist tutorial
[3:54] which will walk you through all of the important steps.
[3:58] The second thing is to continue focusing
on building backlinks.
[4:01] Links have been and still are one of the strongest
ranking signals.
[4:05] And if you want to rank for anything remotely
competitive, you'll need to build them.
[4:10] Now, while you might be searching for new
and revolutionary link building tactics in 2020,
[4:15] my recommendation is to stop.
[4:17] Things like broken link building, the Skyscraper
Technique, and guest posting all work really well.
[4:23] What doesn't work is when you copy other people's
templates verbatim.
[4:28] By doing that, you're essentially putting
yourself in a box with hundreds of other people
[4:32] sending the exact same email, which probably
won't yield the best results.
[4:38] Try and provide value to the person who's receiving
the email to increase your chances of getting links.
[4:44] We have an awesome playlist on various link
building strategies, so if you're relatively new
[4:48] to link building or struggling to build quality backlinks,
I highly recommend watching those videos,
[4:54] choosing a strategy for your pages, and executing.
[4:58] Alright, the final piece to ranking is indexation.
[5:01] Search engines crawl, parse, and store information
in a database called a search index.
[5:07] End users are then able to access this information
using Google search.
[5:11] So if your pages aren't indexed, then it's impossible
to get your site or pages discovered in search.
[5:17] To check if your site is indexed, go to the
Coverage report in Google Search Console
[5:22] and you should be able to see which pages
Google has indexed.
[5:25] Also, if you haven't submitted a sitemap,
then you can do that here, too.
[5:29] Now, if you don't have Search Console setup,
go to Google and search for site:yourdomain.
[5:35] Hopefully you'll see most of your pages there.
[5:38] If you're seeing zero results, it means your
site isn't indexed.
[5:41] If this is you, there are three things you
should look for.
[5:45] First, make sure you haven't unintentionally
noindexed all of your pages.
[5:49] This often happens with redesigns where developers
will noindex an entire site during development
[5:55] and forget to switch it back when migrating.
[5:57] Just open the source code on your homepage,
and search for noindex.
[6:01] If you see it in your meta robots tag, then
you'll want to fix that.
[6:05] Second, make sure you're not blocking Googlebot
or all user agents in your robots.txt file.
[6:12] Just go to yourdomain.com/robots.txt
[6:15] And if you see something like this,
[6:17] it means you're blocking all bots from crawling
any page on your website.
[6:22] And third, check Search Console for a manual action.
[6:25] You can do that by clicking on Manual actions
in the sidebar.
[6:28] Fix whatever it is, and submit a reconsideration request.
[6:32] Now, if you have specific pages that aren't
being indexed, then you likely have more of
[6:36] a technical SEO issue.
[6:38] First, do the same checks that I mentioned,
like making sure you didn't noindex the page.
[6:43] Another reason can be if you're automatically
generating millions of indexable pages.
[6:48] These are most likely going to be low-quality
and will affect your crawl budget.
[6:53] Some examples are forum profiles or faceted
navigation issues on ecommerce pages.
[6:58] There are literally an endless number of things
to check for if your pages aren't being indexed,
[7:03] but these are the most common.
[7:05] Bottomline: if your pages aren't in Google's
index, your SEO future in 2020 or even 2222
[7:12] won't be very promising.
[7:14] Now, while things like BERT or using Python
to automate SEO tasks might seem exciting,
[7:19] prioritize and don't lose focus on these three things
[7:22] that are actually going to get your pages ranking high.
[7:25] Think about it like this.
[7:26] You don't need to know how running shoes are
made in order to become a better sprinter.
[7:30] You need to strengthen your core muscle groups,
[7:33] practice the fundamentals like starting, accelerating,
and finishing.
[7:37] Most importantly, you need to get out there
and compete with others.
[7:41] In the same way, SEO is all about fundamentals.
[7:45] Focus on the things that matter most rather
than chasing shiny tactics from headlines
[7:50] claiming SEO has completely changed.
[7:53] Now, I'd love to hear from you.
[7:54] Do you think that SEO will be more or less
the same in 2020 vs. last year?
