[0:00] nobody visits the second page of
[0:03] Google we brought together top SEO
[0:05] experts to expose some of the biggest
[0:07] myths in the industry I wish I could pay
[0:10] Google only big companies can rank on
[0:13] the first page of
[0:15] Google bust it if we s like in generally
[0:18] to rank generally you can rank with
[0:20] smaller size but for longer keywords and
[0:22] if you're able to publish like an
[0:24] amazing aggregator piece that compares
[0:27] like all of these different vacuum
[0:28] cleaners for instance that might be
[0:30] really really valuable content that a
[0:32] small company could be able to spend
[0:34] that time and spend the resources really
[0:36] being able to do that and just focus on
[0:38] just backing clears more traffic equals
[0:41] more
[0:43] sales that's so situational in general
[0:46] yes uh in many cases no I yeah you don't
[0:49] want more you want the right traffic
[0:51] commodity content is a dime a dozen on
[0:54] the internet you want specific problems
[0:55] specific content and if you hone in on
[0:58] that you can you can really cever some
[1:00] gains even on our blog like we don't
[1:02] just go off of traffic traffic value
[1:04] whatever uh we literally have a business
[1:07] value to every blog post that we assign
[1:09] and and because yeah something might be
[1:11] like this is a keyword volume of 50
[1:14] which we might be like well we don't
[1:15] want to even bother writing that but if
[1:18] it's the right people and we're pitching
[1:20] the product in the right way that's can
[1:22] be super valuable for us only techsavvy
[1:25] people can do
[1:28] SEO this is one of those big
[1:30] misconceptions in SEO a lot of people
[1:32] over index on the technical Parts
[1:34] because they feel like if they can fix
[1:37] some broken links or something something
[1:39] they can control and understand and see
[1:41] changing they'll get amazing SEO results
[1:43] I normally think of like technical SEO
[1:45] as just removing barriers to good
[1:47] performance it's not actively building
[1:49] anything that people will care about
[1:51] once you start to get some momentum
[1:53] don't get me wrong like somebody with
[1:55] technical like knowhow can probably come
[1:58] in and do more advanced strategies but
[2:01] no I don't think you need to be
[2:03] technical to do LCA some some of the
[2:05] most successful people I know are doing
[2:08] minimal SEO just publishing pages on
[2:10] their WordPress blog and just doing the
[2:12] very basic something they learned on
[2:14] Twitter or something like that making
[2:16] good content I always think is more
[2:17] important than getting the SEO perfect
[2:20] behind it and I think that's how Google
[2:22] feels too so yeah you need to pay Google
[2:24] to rank high in search results
[2:28] [Music]
[2:32] I wish I could pay
[2:33] Google there's no money that's being
[2:36] paid to Google you know to rank high in
[2:38] the organic search results historically
[2:41] I've been a very very cheap person when
[2:43] it comes to marketing and managed to get
[2:45] millions of page views from Google and I
[2:47] did it with very little money it's a
[2:49] question of if you have the right
[2:50] knowhow the right time to continue and
[2:53] do SEO over a long time Horizon you
[2:55] still can get good results from it paid
[2:57] ads do subtly influence search results
[3:00] like just from a pure impression
[3:03] click-through rate standpoint if you see
[3:04] a brand show up and then you see the
[3:07] same brand show up again that's going to
[3:09] help you indirectly through engagement
[3:12] metrics but yeah you can't directly pay
[3:16] the librarian to go get your book The
[3:20] more pages you have the better you'll
[3:25] rank that's a half the tides kind of
[3:28] turning these days where more does not
[3:30] equal better I think we generally see
[3:31] larger sites still do well but it's uh
[3:35] it's not what it used to be it really is
[3:37] the opposite like there are some shared
[3:38] signals and stuff and I would say fewer
[3:40] quality pages are generally going to
[3:42] rank better but if you do have more
[3:44] pages like you can rank for more things
[3:46] so the more content you post the better
[3:49] your
[3:53] results AG we agree it's not a more more
[3:56] more quantity quantity quantity game
[3:59] Google is expecting if you just spat out
[4:02] a bunch of content and it sucked then
[4:05] there's no reason why it should or would
[4:08] rank it's like less is more less focus
[4:10] on doing something that is quality and
[4:12] not just for quantity's sake backlinks
[4:15] don't matter in
[4:19] SEO come on I have so many
[4:22] thoughts links will always matter every
[4:24] experience I've ever had of any website
[4:27] links always help it's a link from an
[4:29] external site that says to everybody and
[4:32] their dog hey this piece of content that
[4:34] you posted is actually really really
[4:36] awesome you can have tons of great
[4:38] content nothing happens and you build
[4:39] you know 10 decent contextual links and
[4:42] suddenly the traffic starts to climb
[4:44] after that point and you know if you
[4:45] look at any chart in Side Explorer
[4:48] you'll see that the links in the traffic
[4:49] go up almost exactly together it's it's
[4:52] uncanny links are important if you have
[4:54] a good product or something to back it
[4:55] up it's still that great way for the
[4:58] mention and for when you're doing it
[5:00] correctly to be able to organically say
[5:02] yeah this this rules we should Index
[5:05] this and we should rank this really well
[5:06] I mean they matter a lot less in some
[5:08] ways I I think Google ignores a lot more
[5:11] links than than we realize but you still
[5:14] need links you shouldn't buy
[5:16] [Music]
[5:23] backlinks I thought you were going to go
[5:25] the other way no I prefer not to buy
[5:27] back Lings I prefer I think you can
[5:29] marketing campaigns that are much more
[5:32] effective cost for dollar but I think
[5:33] there are some good placements out there
[5:36] in digital PR where you can buy
[5:38] placements that's that most backlinks I
[5:41] think that are paid for suck but I think
[5:43] you you can get a good good value yeah
[5:45] I'm not going to say like do it for the
[5:47] link value but digital PR contents
[5:50] syndication sponsorships like these are
[5:52] all valid reasons to again not
[5:55] necessarily buy links for the sake of
[5:57] back links but it's it's normal thing in
[6:00] doing business my favorite thing today
[6:01] is buy links to build your brand not
[6:03] point at your content but you know I
[6:05] work in legal in the United States and
[6:08] it's some of the most competitive like
[6:09] keywords people are biding $3 $400 a
[6:12] click I think it's impossible to rank
[6:14] without paying for backlinks and when I
[6:16] say paying for backlinks sometimes what
[6:18] we do is we look at like the first page
[6:20] of Google for a Target keyword and we
[6:22] see like what are all the legal
[6:24] directories that are there right so I
[6:26] always advise my clients that they
[6:28] should be on those legal director iies
[6:30] even if they don't get any business by
[6:32] being on those legal directories they
[6:33] need those websites to link back to them
[6:36] because all their competitors do and
[6:38] sometimes these links are like $300 $400
[6:40] a month just to be on that directory
[6:43] there are some types of links that are
[6:44] probably worth buying if there if you're
[6:46] basically saving yourself effort and
[6:47] time you know like getting nap citations
[6:49] or something like that I think it was a
[6:51] trick question right I mean like you're
[6:52] not going to go to Fiverr and buy links
[6:55] I have bought links on Fiverr as well
[6:57] and it did not go well they did not go
[6:59] well at all
[7:00] no technical SEO isn't important for
[7:03] small
[7:03] sites oh my God come on you're you
[7:08] serious I don't know which way to go I
[7:10] think it's less important than it used
[7:12] to be that is an absolute fallacy I've
[7:15] talked to a lot of folks people who had
[7:17] no idea what they were doing and just
[7:19] staring the website out from scratch and
[7:21] being like Oh we are get all of our
[7:24] referrals through word of mouth and like
[7:26] I just don't really see like my website
[7:28] or SEO being important and then their
[7:31] whole side is no indexed everyone who's
[7:34] ranking on top is you know actively
[7:36] improving their their website and and
[7:38] from a technical perspective every day
[7:40] every week every month and if if you
[7:42] know you are not doing it good luck
[7:44] competing with everyone else you'll
[7:45] probably have 10x or like 5x more
[7:48] budgets for everything else if you don't
[7:50] optimize the website well it's
[7:51] impossible to compete with authority
[7:55] [Music]
[7:56] sites what made you hesitate it's
[7:58] probably the hard it's ever been to
[8:00] compete with big Brands I think you
[8:02] probably still can but it's definitely
[8:03] not as easy as it used to be I think
[8:05] yeah I agree I think with certain
[8:07] queries like best running shoes you have
[8:09] a new site and you're going up against
[8:11] like Runners world yeah chances are you
[8:13] probably won't be able to outrank them
[8:15] but I also think that there's
[8:16] opportunity for small creators with Sur
[8:18] features so things like with videos when
[8:21] you create videos with YouTube then you
[8:23] on a Level Playing Field as everybody
[8:25] else SEO is always a game of um
[8:28] short-term Arbitrage you're always
[8:30] trying to take advantage of whatever is
[8:31] available and at some point the
[8:32] advantage does close up but you can
[8:34] still make hay while the sun is shining
[8:36] I think I agree nobody visits the second
[8:40] page of
[8:43] Google yeah that's it I think you know
[8:45] nowadays people are just like uh
[8:47] conditioned to just refine their search
[8:48] after they see they don't get what
[8:50] they're looking for I think Google is so
[8:53] hellbent and so good at trying to match
[8:55] search your intent resolve queries
[8:58] immediately with all the search features
[9:00] they have now ai overviews featured
[9:02] Snippets all the carousel features that
[9:04] yeah if it's not resolved straight away
[9:06] within the even fold of the page it's
[9:08] not going to be resolved but you know
[9:10] who does go past the 10th result seos
[9:14] all day long yes I'm in position 67
[9:18] right there's hope it's better to build
[9:21] an in-house team than hire an SEO
[9:26] agency I'm wishy-washy on this one my
[9:28] agency are going to kill
[9:31] me I knew we proba different so what do
[9:33] you do for a
[9:35] living I love building in-house teams I
[9:38] think you can work have longer
[9:40] engagements and really dig into the
[9:42] problem ideal scenario has to be
[9:43] in-house team just because you develop
[9:45] institutional knowledge a better
[9:47] understanding of like what people are
[9:48] working on better communication
[9:50] sometimes you just want to hire an
[9:51] agency that already has the track record
[9:54] and The Proven strategy to execute it's
[9:57] a lot harder to actually get resources
[9:59] to hire someone in house than it is to
[10:02] hire like a a partial contractor or an
[10:04] agency completely different budgets and
[10:07] I think a lot of people don't realize
[10:08] that yeah maybe we just have our
[10:09] in-house teams that hire hire for
[10:11] specialty reasons yeah yeah I I
[10:14] typically would favor in-
[10:16] house but uh yeah the agencies have
[10:19] their uses SEO is more effective than
[10:21] paid
[10:22] [Music]
[10:24] ads but I think we might be coming at
[10:26] this from the same way I think long term
[10:28] it's the smart strategy short term it's
[10:32] hard to prove Effectiveness to the sea
[10:34] level you know Executives you can prove
[10:36] it with the paid ads I just actually
[10:38] just ran a big data study for this that
[10:40] yall will see on the HS blog and the
[10:42] clickthrough rates are not there for pay
[10:44] not nearly what SEO gets best you're
[10:46] looking like 20% the paid side just
[10:49] doesn't get that many clicks I will
[10:51] happily turn that around when that study
[10:52] comes out okay okay if you want to learn
[10:55] how to get traffic from Google watch our
