[0:00] #4. How to determine your chances to rank in Google [0:03] As you can tell, analyzing the search traffic potential of your article idea [0:07] is a very simple and straightforward process. [0:10] A much bigger challenge is to determine your chances to outrank the existing articles with [0:14] your own one and get all this traffic to yourself. [0:17] The truth be told, no one really knows for sure how exactly Google ranks pages in their search results. [0:23] Google is using hundreds of different ranking factors, and they are mixing them depending [0:28] on the search query. [0:30] A lot of people, who are new to SEO, are often looking for some magic tool, that will give them [0:34] very specific recommendations on what they need to do in order to rank #1. [0:39] Or even better... a magic tool that will do it for them. [0:42] But I'm afraid such a tool doesn't exist. [0:45] For many years Google was pouring billions of dollars into building the most sophisticated [0:49] search engine on the planet. [0:51] So there's no way for some third party tool to crack their algorithms and give you the [0:56] power to effortlessly get your pages to the top. [0:59] But what we can do is get clues from pages that already rank at the top of Google. [1:05] We can analyze them from different angles, compare them between each other and make assumptions [1:10] on why certain pages outrank others. [1:13] And there are only two sources of information for us: [1:16] It is The page itself [1:18] And Links to that page from other websites. [1:21] I'm going to cover the on-page factors later in this course. [1:24] So for now let's just assume that all the top 10 ranking pages for your desired keyword [1:29] are equally awesome. [1:30] And your own page is no exception. [1:32] The content of your page is 100% relevant to that search query. [1:36] It helps searchers with whatever they were searching for. [1:39] It loads fast. It is optimized for mobile. [1:42] It provides great user experience and it is visually appealing. [1:45] And I have a perfect example to illustrate such a situation. [1:49] Take a look at my guide to keyword research that was published at Ahrefs' Blog. [1:53] This article is clearly relevant to the topic of keyword research, and I doubt that you [1:57] need more than two seconds to realize that. [2:00] But if you google for "keyword research," our article only ranks #3. [2:04] While guides from Moz and Backlinko rank #1 and #2 respectively. [2:09] If you take a look at their articles, each of them has it's pros and cons. [2:13] So it's really hard to tell if our own article is better or worse than theirs. [2:17] Especially it is hard to figure out if you're a machine, and not a human being. [2:22] So why does Google put us at position #3 and puts Moz at position #1? [2:26] Well, like I mentioned earlier, they may use a ton of different factors, to identify which [2:31] page deserves to rank higher. [2:33] For example, guys from Google have recently admitted that they track how users behave [2:38] after clicking on a certain search result. [2:40] How long do people stay on that page? [2:42] Do they close it immediately after visiting? [2:44] Do they browse deeper into this website? [2:46] Or do they go back and refine their search, because they didn't find what they wanted? [2:50] But think about it for a second... [2:52] In order for Google to measure how people behave after clicking on your page in the search results, [2:57] that page should somehow rank in the top 10 search results in the first place. [3:01] So how do you get in the top 10? [3:04] Links from other websites is what gets you to the front page of Google. [3:08] You can think of links as votes. [3:10] When some website links to your page, they are telling Google that out of all pages on the same [3:15] topic they like your page best. [3:17] And the more of these votes your page will get, the more Google will respect it. [3:22] So, as a general rule, the more websites link to your page, the higher it will rank in Google. [3:28] Now, back to my example. [3:29] If you examine these search results in Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer tool you'll notice that the article [3:34] from Moz has vastly more backlinks than our own article. [3:38] It is much shorter and therefore not as deep as our own guide. [3:42] But the huge number of links tells Google that it must be somehow better nevertheless. [3:47] That's why they rank #1. [3:49] But I'm sure you've noticed that this relationship is not linear. [3:52] I mean some of these pages have more backlinks than our article, but they don't rank above us. [3:58] Well, like I said, Google is using hundreds of different factors in their ranking algorithms, [4:02] and the raw number of linking websites is just one of many. [4:06] But it's a rather strong factor nevertheless. [4:09] We did a cool research last year across 2 million random search queries. [4:13] We wanted to study the correlation of different ranking factors with the position of a page in Google. [4:19] And out of all ranking factors that we have studied, backlink factors had the strongest [4:23] correlation with Google ranking. [4:25] Correlation is not causation, of course. [4:28] But any SEO professional knows that links are uber-important for SEO . [4:33] If the search results for your desired keyword have links from hundreds of websites, there's [4:37] a very slim chance that you'll be able to outrank them, unless you get the same number [4:42] of links to your own page. [4:43] Let me show you another cool case. [4:45] Let's look at the search resuts for a keyword "chocolate lab:" [4:48] What you can immediately notice is three outlier pages with tons of backlinks, that rank among [4:54] pages with just a few backlinks. [4:56] And the next thing you notice is that these three pages aren't perfectly relevant to the search query. [5:02] I mean the other seven pages are clearly about chocolate labradors, you can see that just [5:06] by looking at their titles. [5:08] But these other three are about labrador retriever dog breed in general. [5:12] How come they rank between perfectly relevant pages? [5:15] That's because they have too many links to ignore them! [5:19] And if you were attentive, you might have also noticed that these three pages with a ton of backlinks [5:23] rank for a ton of keywords and generate a ton of search traffic. [5:27] We didn't study this at scale yet, but I'm pretty sure that the number of links to a page and it's [5:32] total search traffic are well connected. [5:35] That is why I always look at the total number of the linking websites to the pages that I want [5:39] to replicate on my own blog. [5:41] Remember my document with content ideas? [5:44] I always put the number of linking websites next to each URL. [5:47] My goal is to then cherry-pick the content ideas that get the most search traffic with [5:52] the least backlinks. [5:54] So I advice you to pause this video and review the content ideas that you have shortlisted so far. [5:59] Put the URLs of the articles that you want to replicate into Ahrefs' Site Explorer and [6:04] note down the number of referring domains in your document. [6:07] Hopefully they don't have a lot of websites linking to them, so you'll easily get your own [6:12] article to the top of Google with just a few backlinks. [6:15] But that was a very simplified look at the concept of keyword difficulty.
