[0:00] As the saying goes, the best place to hide a dead body is on the second page of Google. [0:04] And it's because only 0.78% of Google searchers click page 2 results. [0:09] So this tutorial is all about higher rankings and especially getting you off that second, [0:15] third, or tenth page. [0:17] Stay tuned [0:18] [music] [0:22] What's up SEOs? [0:23] Sam Oh here with Ahrefs, the SEO tool that helps you grow your search traffic, research [0:27] your competitors and dominate your niche. [0:29] Now, before we get started, it's important to note that in order to get the most out of [0:33] this tutorial, your website and content should meet a certain level of quality. [0:39] Generally speaking, your site should be mobile-friendly, [0:41] load decently fast, have clear navigation and UX, [0:45] be secure using HTTPS, be free of other glaring technical SEO issues, [0:50] and your content should be well written. [0:52] Not only are some of these direct Google ranking factors, but the process that I'm about to share [0:57] with you will produce much better results if your website is up to scratch. [1:02] Now, I'm assuming you have existing pages that are targeting keywords. [1:05] If you're not, then go and watch one of our keyword research tutorials, which I've linked up [1:09] for you in the description. [1:11] Alright, so here's the entire process as a flow chart. [1:14] Feel free to take a screenshot for your own records and let's get started. [1:18] Step 1 is to check the strength of the competition. [1:22] With any battle, you need to know who you're up against. [1:24] And since we want to rank on the first page of Google, your competition is obviously going [1:29] to be the top 10 results. [1:31] Now, at this stage, we just want to do a quick spot-check to see if the websites ranking for [1:35] this keyword are out of our league. [1:37] So let's say you have a relatively new SEO blog and you want to rank for "SEO." [1:42] You'll see that the top pages are well-known brands like [1:45] Moz, Search Engine Land, Wordstream, and Google. [1:49] Chances are, you probably won't be able to compete anytime soon. [1:53] Whereas something like "affordable seo services for small business" [1:57] shows sites you probably haven't heard of. [1:59] So this might be more within your wheelhouse. [2:01] The second thing to look at is website authority. [2:04] At Ahrefs, we use a metric called Domain Rating or DR. [2:08] This represents the overall strength of a website's backlink profile. [2:12] Now, while I don't use this as a main metric to gauge ranking difficulty, it can work well [2:16] to spot check the relative "strength" of a brand from an SEO perspective. [2:21] If you're not an Ahrefs user, you can use our free Website "Authority" Checker. [2:24] First, enter your domain and you'll see a DR score. [2:28] Mark that down. [2:29] Then you can use it to check the Domain Rating for the top 10 ranking websites. [2:34] If you have an Ahrefs account, just go to Keywords Explorer and enter your target keyword. [2:38] As you can see here for the keyword "SEO," all of the websites' Domain Ratings are quite high. [2:44] So if your DR is let's say 30, then you probably won't be able to compete. [2:49] As for the keyword "affordable SEO services for small business," you'll see Domain Ratings [2:53] ranging from 6 to 86. [2:56] So for that DR 30 site, I'd say it's well within your wheelhouse. [2:59] If you've chosen a keyword that's too competitive now, go back to keyword research. [3:04] And if your keyword is rankable, let's move on to the next step, which is to make sure [3:08] your page aligns with search intent. [3:11] Search intent means the reason behind a searcher's query. [3:14] For example, if you search for "how to make a website," you'll see that almost all of the ranking [3:18] pages are how-to guides with step-by-step instructions. [3:22] To determine search intent, just Google your keyword, and identify the 3 C's of search intent. [3:28] The first C is content type. [3:30] So are the top pages blog posts, product, category, or landing pages? [3:35] For example, the type of pages ranking for "buy protein powder" are all e-commerce category pages. [3:41] The second C is content format. [3:43] And this applies mainly to when you're trying to rank informational content. [3:47] Common formats include: how-to guides, step- by-step tutorials, list posts, opinion pieces, [3:53] reviews and comparisons. [3:55] So if we look at the top pages for "best tasting protein powder," you'll see all pages are list posts. [4:01] And third is content angle. [4:03] This one is harder to quantify than type or format, but content angle is generally the dominant unique [4:09] selling proposition used by the top-ranking pages. [4:12] For example, pages ranking for "best protein powder" almost all have the current year in the title, [4:18] which to me says that freshness is the angle. [4:21] Whereas the pages ranking for "blogging tips" are taking the angle of "for beginners." [4:27] If you were to try and rank for "blogging tips" with an article called "17 Advanced Blogging Tips [4:32] for Professional Bloggers," it might be tough to rank. [4:35] Reason being, the better you can match the searcher's query, the better your chances of ranking high. [4:41] If your page doesn't match search intent, you'll want to update the page so it does. [4:45] But, if your page is matching intent, let's move onto the next stage, which is [4:50] to ensure your content covers the topic in full. [4:54] The way that you and I look at topics might be very different from the way Google looks at them. [4:59] For example, if you and I were to talk about the best watch brands, I might talk about Apple [5:04] and you might talk about Omega. [5:06] Ask five more people, and you might get five completely different responses. [5:10] Now, looking at Google's top 10 pages for this query, it's quite clear you should write [5:15] a list-style blog post that focuses heavily on luxury brands. [5:20] And if you visit the pages, you'll notice something interesting. [5:23] They all mention Rolex. [5:25] So this is probably a brand you should include too if you haven't already. [5:29] Now, this is kind of just guessing based on observation. [5:32] So if you want to take it a step further, you can also do a Content Gap analysis at the page-level. [5:38] Just take a few top-ranking pages and paste them in the top section of Ahrefs' Content Gap tool. [5:43] I've already done that here with 5 relevant pages, so let's run the search. [5:48] And now you can see queries that one or more of these pages are ranking for. [5:52] Just sift through the keywords and you'll get a better idea of subtopics you should talk about. [5:57] Now, if your content isn't up to par, then rewind and follow these steps. [6:01] But if you've covered your topic in full, move on to the next step which is to estimate the number [6:07] of backlinks you'll need and then build them. [6:09] Backlinks are an important ranking factor. [6:12] Not only has Google said it themselves, but pretty much every industry study has found [6:16] a positive relationship between organic search traffic and backlinks. [6:20] Now, there's no way to know an exact number of backlinks required because not all backlinks [6:25] are created equal. [6:26] But we can get a rough estimate using Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer. [6:30] Just search for your target keyword. [6:31] And just below the Keyword Difficulty score, you'll see a little note that says [6:35] "We estimate that you'll need backlinks from around 43 websites to rank in the top 10 for this keyword." [6:42] The way we come up with this number is by taking a weighted average of the number of [6:45] unique websites linking to the top pages. [6:48] So, while this can work as an eyeball metric, I recommend scrolling down to see the top 10 [6:53] pages so you can analyze other factors, like topical relevance of the pages and domains, [6:59] as well as website authority. [7:01] We have a full tutorial on assessing ranking difficulty, which I'll link up in the description. [7:06] Now, if you don't have enough backlinks, then go and watch our link building playlist and execute. [7:11] But if you do have enough, let's move on to the next step, [7:14] which is to add internal links to your page. [7:17] We already know that backlinks can help boost the authority of your page. [7:20] But internal links can also help tremendously. [7:24] To find pages you should add links from, just go to Google and search for site:yourdomain.com [7:30] and then a keyword that's relevant to your page. [7:33] You'll then see all indexed pages from your site that have that keyword somewhere on the page. [7:38] Visit the pages and add internal links where relevant. [7:42] Generally speaking, the more "authority" you've built to the linking pages, the more "authority" [7:46] it can pass to the linked pages. [7:48] If you don't have any authoritative pages to link from, [7:52] then I highly recommend watching our video on the "middleman technique," which is an SEO strategy [7:57] built on the foundation of strategic linking. [7:59] Now, after you've done everything up to this point, it's just a matter of waiting. [8:03] How long? [8:04] Well, that depends. [8:05] After studying 2 million keywords, we found that less than 5% of the top 10 pages [8:11] were under a year old. [8:13] So rather than sitting around twiddling your thumbs, go and repeat the process for [8:17] different keywords and pages. [8:19] But before you get all pumped up to do that, there's one very important thing you should know. [8:25] Ranking on the first page of Google may not be the answer to solve your SEO woes. [8:31] If you look at this CTR curve, you'll see that there's a huge drop-off after the first 2 or 3 positions. [8:36] Meaning, if you're ranking in position 10, you'd only get around a 1% click-through rate. [8:41] So to put this into perspective, if you ranked in position 10 for a keyword that gets searched [8:46] 1,000 times per month, that's only 10 search visitors, which may not be worth the effort. [8:51] So instead of just going for a first page ranking, shoot for the top 3. [8:55] And this will often come down to matching search intent, creating thorough content, [8:59] and building more links. [9:01] I highly recommend watching our video on how to rank higher in Google, [9:04] as well as our link building playlist. [9:07] But before you go, make sure to like, share and subscribe for more actionable SEO [9:11] and marketing tutorials. [9:12] And if you have any questions, throw them in the comments below.
