[0:00] Part 3. How to create unique content
that will stand out
[0:03] As you can tell by now, I'm a big advocate
of creating 100% unique content as opposed
[0:09] to re-writing what has already been published.
[0:11] If you will write about things that cannot be
found elsewhere, your blog is almost guaranteed
[0:16] to be a success.
[0:17] But where do you find these unique things
to blog about?
[0:19] I really like what Rohin Dhar, the CEO and
Founder of Priceonomics said in his
[0:24] Content Marketing Handbook:
[0:26] Authentic information that your company has
access to is the currency of truly valuable
[0:31] content marketing.
[0:32] "Sure, there may be more "shareable" content
out there - cute animal pictures, snarky
[0:36] commentary, celebrity gossip, and the like
- but that stuff won't get you customers.
[0:41] Information, on the other hand, will.
[0:43] It can be data that your company produces,
insights you have because of your industry
[0:47] experience, or stories about the people you
have access to."
[0:50] Let's focus on that last sentence.
[0:52] You can craft unique content from:
[0:54] The data that your company produces;
[0:56] Insights you have because of your industry
experience;
[0:59] And stories of the people you have access to.
[1:02] I do admit that it's easy for me to be an advocate
of these things, since I work at Ahrefs.
[1:07] We have tons of data that we can study.
[1:08] We have tons of unique insights that we can share;
[1:11] And we have access to the best minds of
the SEO industry.
[1:14] But what if you're a newbie blogger and you
don't have these kinds of luxuries?
[1:18] Well, actually you do!
[1:20] Anyone can collect some unique data about
their industry.
[1:23] Anyone can come up with unique insights
related to their industry.
[1:27] Anyone can connect with industry experts
and get a bit of help from them.
[1:31] I know this, because not too long ago I've
been a newbie blogger myself.
[1:35] Take a look at this article, that I wrote
for my personal blog back then.
[1:38] I wanted to write a post about guest blogging,
but there were a ton of articles on that topic already,
[1:44] published by well-known people with
a ton of authority and a big audience.
[1:47] My only option to stand out: among them was
to do something entirely unique.
[1:52] Which no one else did before me.
[1:54] Well, remember my advice earlier in this lesson?
[1:57] I decided to turn 180 degrees and challenge
what all existing guides were saying about
[2:02] guest blogging.
[2:03] I wrote some guest articles before and I didn't
see any of the outcomes that all these guides
[2:08] were promising I would get.
[2:09] So I could easily write a cool article based
on my own experience in guest blogging.
[2:14] But why would people listen to some random
blogger with 0 credibility, right?
[2:18] As we've just discussed, people want to learn
from authorities.
[2:21] So I followed another advice from this lesson.
[2:24] I acted like a journalist[ad] and reached
out to over 500 bloggers, big and small,
[2:29] and asked them to share some data with
me on how their guest articles performed
[2:34] and if they were happy with the results.
[2:36] This whole venture resulted in one of my best
articles to date.
[2:39] And even though it was published on my personal
blog, which hardly has any traffic, that article
[2:44] generated quite a buzz and got over a hundred
links from 60 different websites.
[2:49] And it generated a total of 10,000 visits to my blog.
[2:52] And keeps generating a bit of passive traffic
even years later.
[2:56] Would I be able to get this kind of result
by writing an article with the same tips that
[3:01] can be found in other articles about guest blogging?
[3:03] Of course not!
[3:04] My article only performed so well, because
it was 100% unique.
[3:09] So I hope that my story will discourage you
from creating new clones of existing content
[3:15] and encourage you to bring something
entirely new to this world.
[3:19] Let's be honest.
[3:20] The vast majority of people are too lazy to
do these kinds of things.
[3:24] But that is actually a good thing!
[3:25] The more steps you take towards making your
content awesome and unique, the less competition
[3:30] you're going to encounter.
[3:32] And that wraps up the lesson on creating
awesome content.
[3:35] And in the next one we're going to start talking
about linkbuilding and the kind of content
[3:39] that attracts links.
[3:41] Sounds good? Then I'll see you in the next lesson.
