[0:00] Is it Ahrefs or A hrefs? [0:02] Call it what you will, but we still have the same great SEO tools. [0:06] Now, you might have heard about us from a friend or maybe you learned a cool hack from [0:09] your favorite blogger. [0:11] But how do you actually use Ahrefs to get more traffic to your website and improve SEO? [0:16] You're about to find out in this video. [0:18] Stay tuned. [0:18] [music] [0:22] What's up marketers? [0:23] Sam Oh here with Ahrefs, the SEO tool that helps you grow your search traffic, research [0:28] your competitors and dominate your niche. [0:30] Now while there are virtually an endless number of ways you can use our toolset, today, I'm [0:35] going to share with you 11 ways to use Ahrefs that can actually help you get more traffic [0:40] and hopefully, more business. [0:42] Let's get to it. [0:43] The first feature Ahrefs is by far my favorite, and that's to find content opportunities based [0:48] on your competitor's pages that get the most search traffic. [0:51] Think about this. [0:52] If you could know the pages that are driving the most search traffic for your competitors, [0:56] then wouldn't you want to get in on that action? [0:58] Well, it's super easy to do with Site Explorer. [1:00] Just type in a domain of one of your competitors. [1:03] Next, go to The top pages report. [1:05] And this report ranks a website's pages based on the estimated organic search traffic they get. [1:10] And by default, the country that drives the most organic traffic is selected. [1:14] But you can switch the dropdown to "All countries" to see the total search traffic these pages [1:18] get globally. [1:20] If you want to find low competition topics, then just look at the total search traffic [1:24] vs. the number of referring domains. [1:26] Here's a good one. [1:27] This page is about using tags on YouTube videos, which only has 4 unique websites linking to [1:32] it and gets over 10,000 search visitors each month. [1:35] We also have another report called "Top subfolders" which is similar to Top pages but gives you [1:41] an additional layer of data. [1:42] This report shows you the pages and subfolders of a website that get the most organic traffic. [1:47] So as you can see, Brian's YouTube hub generates around 19% of his website's total search traffic. [1:53] So not only can you learn new topics to write about, but you'll also learn a little bit [1:57] about site structure of a broader topic. [2:00] The next way to use Ahrefs is to research both the quality of your competitors backlinks [2:04] and get an understanding of how they got them. [2:07] Let's go back to the Top pages report for a popular health blog. [2:10] You'll see that this page on keto dieting has over 900 unique websites linking to it. [2:15] Let's click on the number here, which will open up the Referring domains report, which [2:18] lists all unique websites that are linking to this page. [2:22] You can immediately see that the websites linking to this page are quality sites like [2:26] the New York Times, CNBC, cancer.org and more. [2:31] But it's not always this kosher. [2:32] For example, you'll see that this page has links from nearly 200 websites, which is no joke. [2:38] But if you look at the Referring domains report, you can immediately tell that the quality [2:42] of the links aren't great quality just by looking at the domain names that are linking to it. [2:46] To paint an even clearer picture, click on the "Link type" filter and you'll see that [2:50] more than half of their links are nofollowed, which just seems unnatural. [2:54] Let's go back to the original example. [2:56] If we want to dig deeper into the linking pages for this keto diet web page, we can [3:00] go to the "Backlinks" report in the sidebar. [3:02] This page shows you where the link is coming from, metrics on the linking page, and then [3:07] the context of the backlink. [3:08] For example, you'll see that this link was earned because of a stat from the page. [3:12] But filtering through all of the linking pages would take a long time. [3:15] So you can actually use filters to narrow in on a specific subset of links. [3:20] For example, if you wanted to reach out to all linking pages that are from other blog [3:23] posts, you could set the link type filter to "Content," which will show you only pages [3:28] that are linking to the target within a blob of text. [3:31] Or if you wanted to only find followed links, then you can set the link type to "Dofollow," [3:35] which will narrow it down to only the value-passing links. [3:38] But let's say that you're a huge fan of resource page link building. [3:41] You can easily find link building opportunities by using the Include search box. [3:45] Just type in a common footprint like "resources." [3:48] Then we'll set these two checkboxes since that's where our keyword usually appears. [3:52] And if we click through to the first linking page, you'll see that it seems like a perfectly [3:56] good place where you could reach out and get your page added. [3:59] In general, for backlinks reports, I recommend doing this at the page level, because analyzing [4:04] links of an entire domain will likely be too large to get really actionable data from. [4:09] The next way is to find low competition topics with high traffic potential. [4:13] And you can do this using Content Explorer, which is our very own search engine with a [4:17] database of over one billion pages. [4:19] Just type in a general keyword related to your niche. [4:22] So I'll type in backpacks. [4:23] And since we know that backlinks help a page rank high in Google, we'll set the maximum [4:28] number of referring domains to zero to help us identify low competition topics. [4:32] Finally, we'll set the Organic traffic filter to a minimum value of 1,000. [4:37] Now what this combination of filters does, is it shows us all of the pages that contain [4:41] the word "backpacks," have zero backlinks pointing at them, and get over 1,000 search [4:46] visitors per month. [4:47] Plus, we take the guesswork out of knowing which keywords to create your content around. [4:51] Just click on the Details button and then the Organic keywords tab, and you'll see the keywords [4:55] they rank for, their ranking position, and the amount of traffic each keyword accounts for. [5:00] Try this with a broad keyword related to your niche, and you might just find yourself some [5:04] great topics you can get traffic from. [5:06] The next use case is to find keyword data from 10 different search engines. [5:10] Keywords Explorer is Ahrefs' keyword research tool. [5:12] It's super simple to use. [5:14] Just choose a search engine, whether that be Google, YouTube, Amazon, Bing, or any [5:19] of these other platforms, enter your keyword, and run the search. [5:23] Since we chose Google, you'll see some helpful keyword metrics like Keyword difficulty, Search [5:27] volume, Clicks data, and more. [5:30] You can generate more keyword ideas from any of the reports here in the sidebar, or you [5:34] can dig deeper into this search query by scrolling down and analyzing the position history, and [5:39] the top 10 ranking results. [5:41] Let's move on to the next use case, and that's to find a ton of relevant guest blogging sites. [5:46] If you've ever looked for guest posting opportunities, you've probably done it using Google search operators. [5:51] You'd probably searched for something like "write for us" and then added a general topic like "camping." [5:56] Now there are a few problems with this. [5:57] First, you don't have any of the SEO metrics so you won't know if writing for this site [6:02] would have any benefit at all. [6:04] And second, you'll almost always have to spend a ton of time filtering through a lot of irrelevant results. [6:10] And three, you're really limiting yourself to sites that have "contribute" or "write for [6:14] us" pages, which will be tough, especially if you're in a small niche. [6:18] And just because a website doesn't have a write for us page, it doesn't mean they won't [6:22] accept guest posts. [6:23] Well, Content Explorer can solve all of these problems and then some. [6:27] Let's start by typing a keyword into Content Explorer. [6:30] And I'll click on the "One article per domain" filter since we don't need to pitch [6:33] the same website more than once. [6:35] Finally, you can filter this set of results down even more by using the Domain Rating filter. [6:40] And Domain Rating is an Ahrefs metric which represents the overall strength of a website's [6:45] backlink profile. [6:46] So if you're new to guest blogging, then you might set the Domain Rating filter down to [6:50] 30-40, which is the perfect way to find smaller sites so you can get some practice pitching, [6:55] writing and building your portfolio. [6:57] And if you're a seasoned guest blogger, then you can set the Domain Rating filter to something [7:01] like 50-70, which will narrow in on more established blogs. [7:05] Now pitch a good number of sites and you're off to the races. [7:08] We have a full video on scaling guest blogging, so if this is something that you use as a link [7:13] building or marketing strategy, I highly recommend watching that. [7:16] Now, let's look at a way to use Ahrefs to find new link building opportunities on complete [7:21] autopilot. [7:22] In our backlinks study, we found that top ranking pages are more likely to consistently [7:27] acquire new links simply because of their ranking position. [7:30] And this happens because higher ranking pages will naturally get more exposure. [7:34] Knowing this, you can use Ahrefs' Backlinks alerts to find out where these top ranking [7:38] pages are getting their links from... in real time. [7:41] Here's how it's done. [7:42] First, go to Google and type in the keyword you want to rank for. [7:45] Next, copy the URL of the top ranking page. [7:48] Now, go to Alerts, and create a new Backlinks alert. [7:51] Just paste in the top ranking URL and set the Scope to "New." [7:54] Now, any time this page gets a new backlink, you'll get an email notification. [7:58] And if you see an opportunity to pitch your page, then you'll have timing on your side [8:02] and that's a critical component to successful outreach. [8:05] But don't limit yourself to the #1 ranking page. [8:08] You might as well create new alerts for the top 3 or top 5 pages to maximize your opportunities. [8:14] The next feature in Ahrefs that you have to use is our Content Gap tool. [8:18] This tool can show you keywords that one or more of your competitors are ranking for, [8:22] where your website isn't. [8:24] Logically speaking, if two or more of your direct organic search competitors are ranking [8:29] for these keywords, then there's a good chance that you should go and target them too. [8:33] To get started, enter your domain into Site Explorer. [8:36] Next, go to the Сontent gap tool in the sidebar. [8:38] In the top section, enter in a couple of your competitors' domains. [8:42] After you've done that, I recommend changing this dropdown to "all of the below targets." [8:47] This will keep our results super relevant by only showing keywords where both of these [8:51] websites rank, and yours doesn't. [8:53] I also recommend leaving this checkbox checked, so only keywords where one of your competitors [8:58] ranks in the top 10 will be shown. [9:00] Again, another way to get relevant results. [9:03] And I can see a couple of great keywords that we can create content around like a guide [9:07] on using Google Search Console as well as YouTube SEO. [9:10] But our Content gap tool is super unique in that you can actually run these reports at [9:14] the page level. [9:15] Let's say that we want to create a blog post on YouTube SEO. [9:18] First, I'll click on the SERP button beside that keyword to see the top ranking pages [9:22] for this keyword. [9:23] Next, I'll copy the top 3 relevant ranking results and paste them into the top section. [9:29] And I'll actually delete our URL at the bottom. [9:31] If we run the search, you'll be able to see all of the keywords that the top ranking [9:35] pages rank for. [9:36] So you can then use this keyword list as an outline for content that you're about to create. [9:40] Just skim through the keywords and try and extract sub topics within it. [9:44] The next feature will help you preserve "link juice" from your broken pages. [9:48] Think about this for a second. [9:49] If you have links pointing at a page, but it's returning a 404 response code, then you're [9:54] completely wasting perfectly good links. [9:57] You can find these pages really quick in Site Explorer. [9:59] Just search for your domain. [10:00] And then go to the Best by links report. [10:02] This report shows you the pages on your website that have the most backlinks. [10:06] To find your broken pages, just click on the HTTP code filter and choose "404 not found." [10:12] All you need to do now is fix the page or add a redirect to another relevant page, and [10:17] fix any internal URLs pointing at the broken page. [10:20] Now, this is great to fix issues on your own website, but why not look up your competitors' [10:25] websites to find broken link building opportunities? [10:28] Just change the URL in the search bar to a competing website. [10:32] Then, set the HTTP code filter to 404. [10:35] And we now have tons of new topics that we can create content around and people to reach [10:39] out to with some good old-fashioned broken link building. [10:42] We have a full step-by-step tutorial on doing broken link building with stats and all, so [10:47] I highly recommend watching that after. [10:49] Now, we've talked a lot about keyword research and link building, so let's switch gears to [10:53] technical SEO. With Ahrefs' Site Audit tool, you can scan your [10:56] website for over 100 common technical SEO issues. [11:00] After you've run your crawl, go to the Overview report and scroll to the table near the bottom, [11:04] which shows you all of the technical SEO issues we found. [11:07] For example, if we click on "404 page," it'll open up Data explorer and show all of the [11:12] broken pages we found on your website. [11:14] And the reason why we were able to find these pages is because there are internal links [11:18] on your website pointing at them. [11:20] So you'd probably want to remove these. [11:21] You can just click on the number of inlinks beside the page you want to investigate, export [11:26] the report, and then you or your developer can remove the internal outlinks. [11:30] Site Audit also has dedicated reports to specific technical categories like page speed, HTML [11:37] tags, and more. [11:38] Let's go to the HTML tags report. [11:40] You'll see that a lot of the pages are missing a meta description tag. [11:44] So let's click on that error, which will open up Data explorer showing you the affected pages. [11:48] A cool feature with things like meta descriptions and titles is that you can actually add a [11:53] description by clicking the plus button here, and enter in the text that you want to input. [11:58] After you've created all of your notes, go to the "to-do" report and you can export the [12:03] results, send it to your developer, and have them add your descriptions. [12:07] So we've covered a lot of ground with the main categories in SEO, but what about measuring [12:12] ranking performance? [12:13] Well, we've got Rank Tracker for that. [12:14] With Rank Tracker, you can see where your pages rank in Google for any keyword on desktop [12:19] and mobile across 170 countries. [12:22] But I want to show you a couple of unique features within Ahrefs' Rank Tracker that [12:26] can help you take performance optimization to the next level. [12:29] First up is our SERP feature tracking. [12:32] In total, we track 13 SERP features for all of your keywords. [12:35] Not only do we show you which features are visible in the SERPs, but we show you the [12:39] history of these tracked features which you may have owned. [12:42] Another unique feature within Rank Tracker is the Competitors report. [12:45] You can track up to 5 of your competitors and see how you match up against them on graphs [12:50] for various categories. [12:52] These are just a dozen or so use cases that you can do with Ahrefs. [12:55] But there's a lot more you can do than this. [12:58] So I've got a question for you. [12:59] If you're already an Ahrefs user, I'd love to hear about which feature you use most. [13:04] And if you're not, which feature would you want to use most. [13:07] Make sure to leave a comment below and if you enjoyed this video, make sure to like, [13:11] share and subscribe. And I highly recommend watching the playlist below to get in-depth [13:16] training on specific topics like keyword research, link building, technical SEO and more. [13:21] So keep grinding away, and I'll see you in the next video.
