[0:00] Part #2. How to get backlink ideas from your competitors
[0:03] Analyzing your competitors' backlink profiles
[0:05] can lead to a goldmine of link building opportunities,
[0:08] which you wouldn't otherwise be able to discover.
[0:11] But some competitors have tens of
thousands of backlinks.
[0:14] So there's no way you can review them all
manually—it would take too long.
[0:19] For example, here at Ahrefs one of the
blogs we compete with for search traffic
[0:23] is Brian Dean's backlinko.com.
[0:25] We have quite an overlap in the keywords that
we're targeting with our articles, so it would
[0:29] make sense for us to learn which websites
link to backlinko.com so that we could pitch
[0:33] our own content to them.
[0:35] But if we put backlinko.com in Site Explorer, we'll
see that over 11,000 websites are linking to it.
[0:41] That's a lot of backlinks and we certainly don't
have time to manually review all of them.
[0:46] So how on earth do you analyze big backlink
profiles of your competitors without going crazy?
[0:51] Well, let me show you three great strategies
that will help you to quickly make sense of
[0:56] such a large dataset.
[0:57] Strategy #1. Find their "superfans."
[1:00] Let's continue with an example of backlinko.com
which is a competitor to Ahrefs blog.
[1:04] Brian Dean has published quite a few amazing
articles over the last few years and I know for sure
[1:09] that he has grown a big army of fans
who consistently link to his content.
[1:13] Wouldn't it be cool to know who they are?
[1:15] If someone is so eager to link to the content
of your competitor, they might be interested
[1:19] in your content too.
[1:20] So how do you find these superfans?
[1:22] You could try going to Referring domains
report, filtering by dofollow links only and then
[1:27] sorting the results by the number of dofollow
links from a domain.
[1:30] But because the web is full of trash, you're very
likely to see a ton of very strange websites there
[1:35] which don't look like websites where
you would care to be featured.
[1:38] So there's a better way!
[1:39] Go to the Best by links report and set HTTP
code filter to 200.
[1:43] This will give you a list of the pages on your
competitors' website that have generated
[1:47] the most backlinks.
[1:48] Now, take up to 10 of these pages and copy/paste
them into Ahrefs' Link Intersect tool.
[1:53] Make sure to strip the protocol from each
URL and use the Prefix setting.
[1:57] This will give better results.
[1:59] Let me do that with five of the most linked-to
articles at backlinko.com.
[2:03] After clicking Show link opportunities, I get
only 66 websites that have linked to all five
[2:07] articles of our competitor.
[2:09] If I start exploring those, most of them would
likely turn out to be legit websites worth
[2:14] getting a link from.
[2:15] And because they link to not one but all five
articles on a blog that we're competing with,
[2:19] there should be a very high chance that
we can get a link from them too.
[2:22] That's how we went from over 11,000 random
websites that link to our competitor to only 66
[2:28] that are worth our immediate attention.
[2:30] But the fun doesn't end there.
[2:31] Maybe some of these websites have already
linked to us?
[2:34] We have a cool setting for that in Link Intersect tool.
[2:37] Just enter your own website there and all
sites that already link to you will be excluded
[2:42] from the results.
[2:43] So let's put in ahrefs.com and see how many
websites link to all five articles at backlinko.com
[2:48] but have never linked to any pages on ahrefs.com.
[2:51] And there's none except for ourselves.
[2:53] Which means that all their "superfans" already
know about us.
[2:57] But we're not finished yet.
[2:58] We can go back and change this little setting
from All to Any.
[3:01] This will expand our results by including
websites that link to any four of these articles,
[3:06] any three of these articles, any two of these
articles and even any single one of these articles.
[3:11] Let's see how that looks.
[3:12] And now we get 34 hundred results.
[3:14] These sites have linked to articles by our
competitor but have never linked to us.
[3:19] Which makes them perfect outreach targets.
[3:21] Clearly, there will be some trash here too but
many legit websites can be easily identified
[3:25] just by looking at their domain names alone:
[3:27] bestitpoint.com, ezmarketing.com,
ecomtuning.com, futurecontent.co.
[3:34] These four look good, and when I open them,
I can see that they're digital marketing agencies.
[3:38] Each of them has a blog from which they were
linking to articles at backlinko.com.
[3:42] And because our content overlaps so much it
should not be too hard to connect with these
[3:46] guys and find a way to get featured on their blog.
[3:49] Now, 34 hundred websites is quite a lot to go
through, even if you're just quickly scanning
[3:54] them for good-looking domain names, like I just did.
[3:56] But if we look at the intersect column, we'll
see that it drops to 1 as early as page #7.
[4:02] Which means that we have slightly over 300
websites that link to 2 or more articles by
[4:07] our competitor but have never linked to us.
[4:09] The rest of them only link to a single article,
so they're not really superfans.
[4:13] Now, 300 is a totally manageable number.
[4:16] You can scan through this amount of websites
in less than one hour and find quite a few good
[4:20] link opportunities.
[4:21] And then you can take five more articles from
the blog of your competitor and analyze them
[4:26] with link intersect.
[4:27] Then you can do this with some other
competitor of yours.
[4:30] Strategy #2. Find the "power linkers."
[4:32] I just showed you how to use Link Intersect tool
in Ahrefs to identify "superfans" who consistently
[4:38] link to articles of your competitor.
[4:40] But there's another cool way to use Link Intersect.
[4:42] You can find websites that link to a few blogs
that you're competing with, but they have never
[4:46] linked to your own blog.
[4:48] Sounds good?
[4:48] So let me put five well-known blogs in our own
industry and see how many websites have linked
[4:53] to all five of them but never linked to ahrefs.com.
[4:57] And we have over 200 results!
[4:59] Now, this is a real goldmine of link building
opportunities.
[5:02] All these websites have mentioned content
from all five of our competitors but have
[5:06] never linked to us.
[5:07] This has to be fixed!
[5:09] I'm sure if we send a personal outreach email
to all 200 site owners and introduce them
[5:13] to Ahrefs Blog, many of them will end up linking to us.
[5:16] I know this for a fact, because we regularly
reach out to these kinds of sites.
[5:20] And once you're done with all websites in
that list you can repeat with five other blogs
[5:24] that you compete with.
[5:25] Or, you can play with that "All/Any" setting
to expand the list of results the same way
[5:30] we did when looking for "superfans."
[5:32] All in all, with the help of Link Intersect
tool in Ahrefs you should be able to discover
[5:35] a ton of great link opportunities with just
a few hours of work.
[5:39] And we have one last competitor research strategy
left to discuss.
[5:42] Strategy #3. Analyse their latest backlinks.
[5:45] While taking action on the previous two strategies
you should always pay attention to the date
[5:50] when each of the linking websites was last updated.
[5:52] Chances are many of the websites who are
linking to your competitors probably did so
[5:56] quite a long time ago, but they're not actively
updating their website anymore.
[6:00] While there's still a chance to persuade them to
link to you, the likelihood drops rather significantly.
[6:05] So why don't you look at the most recently
acquired links of your competitors.
[6:09] In Ahrefs we have a report just for that,
and it's called New Backlinks.
[6:12] So let's see who has linked to backlinko.com
in the last few days.
[6:16] I usually just skim through a list of backlinks
and look for domain names that look good.
[6:20] So here's one cool name that caught my attention: marketingninjas.com.
[6:24] If I do a site: search in Google, I will see
that they have never mentioned Ahrefs
[6:28] on their website.
[6:29] I can also go to the Referring Domains report
for ahrefs.com and look for marketingninjas.com
[6:34] among them to verify that they have never
linked to our website.
[6:38] And they haven't.
[6:39] So that's the kind of a link opportunity that
I was looking for.
[6:42] By browsing their website I can see that it's yet
another marketing agency which has an active blog.
[6:47] So all we need to do is reach out to them
and pitch them some of our own content.
[6:51] If they enjoy articles from backlinko.com,
I have no doubts that we'll be able to impress
[6:56] them with our own blog.
[6:57] And they might link to some of our articles later on.
[7:00] So that's how you mine great link opportunities
by researching who links to your competitors.
[7:04] In just a few hours of browsing their latest
backlinks you can find enough opportunities
[7:08] to keep you busy for weeks ahead.
[7:10] Here's one last tip.
[7:12] With Ahrefs you can receive email alerts every
time your competitors get new backlinks.
[7:16] Just go to Alerts section of Ahrefs, the
Backlinks tab, and click New alert.
[7:21] But most likely your competitors are getting
hundreds of new backlinks to their blog every
[7:25] week, or even every day.
[7:27] So if you setup a backlink alert for their
entire website, or even entire blog you will
[7:33] quickly get overwhelmed with the amount of
backlinks that Ahrefs will be sending via email.
[7:37] What I suggest you do instead is setup alerts
for a bunch of individual articles from their
[7:42] blog that you care about the most.
[7:44] For example, these could be the articles that
are currently outranking your own ones
[7:48] in Google search results.
[7:49] This way you're only going to receive email
alerts with new backlinks pointing directly
[7:53] at these few articles.
[7:55] Which would make these email reports very
insightful and actionable.
[7:58] Go try it with a few best articles of your
competitors and see how it works.
