[0:00] Part 3: How to find keywords that your competitors
are ranking for
[0:04] "He who wrestles with us, strengthens our
nerves, and sharpens our skill.
[0:09] Our antagonist is our helper." - Edmund Burke
[0:13] This quote perfectly applies to content
marketing and blogging.
[0:16] We can study our competitors, pinpoint their
best performing content and beat them at it.
[0:22] But first, you need to know who you're up against.
[0:24] You might already know which websites you're
competing with in Google search results.
[0:28] But in case you don't, just put the keywords
found in the previous excercise into Google
[0:33] and see who ranks there.
[0:34] Those are your competitors.
[0:36] Let's try that with one of the keywords we've
discovered earlier - "can cats eat dog food."
[0:41] When browsing Google search results for that keyword,
[0:43] I see a cool website that catches my attention.
[0:45] The website name is way too awesome to ingore
it - lovemeow.com - I love it.
[0:51] So we know that lovemeow.com website ranks
well for "can cats eat dog food" search query.
[0:57] Wouldn't it be awesome to know all other search
queries that it ranks for?
[1:01] Because we have a tool for that in Ahrefs.
[1:03] Let's put lowemeow.com into Ahrefs' Site Explorer
and go to a report called Organic keywords.
[1:09] Here I can see all the search queries that
a target website or article ranks for.
[1:14] That is very cool, but not very actionable to be honest.
[1:18] That's why I prefer the report called Top pages.
[1:21] It groups all these keywords that a website
is ranking for by the ranking page.
[1:26] So I can easily see which articles bring the
most search traffic to this blog.
[1:30] The top-performing article at lovemeow.com blog
is titled "Why Does My Cat Stick His Tongue Out".
[1:37] And in brings almost 900 visitors from
the United States alone.
[1:41] And the total traffic is 1,200.
[1:44] So how cool is that?
[1:45] Usually when people see this feature for
the first time they are totally blown away
[1:49] by the amount of value they can get from it.
[1:51] In just a few seconds you can see all the
best performing pages of any competitor.
[1:56] And there's also a column with the number
referring domains to each of these pages.
[2:01] So all you need to do from here is cherry-pick
the pages that bring them the most traffic
[2:06] while having the least amount
of websites linking to them.
[2:09] And once you're done with the first competitor,
you can click on Competing domains report
[2:13] and see which other websites are ranking for
the same search queries as this competitor.
[2:18] Here's a cool one I see right away: catster.com.
[2:22] Let's browse their top pages.
[2:24] Looks like their articles get vastly more search
traffic than what we've seen at lovemeow.com.
[2:30] And some of them have less than 10 referring domains.
[2:32] Which means they should be fairly easy to outrank.
[2:35] And once you're done with catster.com you can click
Competing domains again and dive even deeper into
[2:41] your competitive space.
[2:42] I'm sure you get the idea.
[2:44] So hit pause and take action!
[2:46] Spend some time digging into websites of your
competitors and noting their pages best into
[2:51] your spreadsheet.
[2:52] And I have one last source of awesome
content ideas left for you.
