[0:00] Want to see a simple SEO strategy?
[0:02] This is the "middleman" method.
[0:03] It's a highly effective way for websites both
big and small to maximize their Google rankings.
[0:08] And today, I'm going to show you exactly how
to execute this strategy to get more
[0:13] organic traffic to your website.
[0:14] Stay tuned.
[0:15] [music]
[0:19] What's up SEOs?
[0:20] Sam Oh here with Ahrefs, the SEO tool that
helps you grow your search traffic,
[0:23] research your competitors, and dominate your niche.
[0:26] Now, this is one of my favorite SEO strategies and it's
because literally anyone and everyone can
[0:32] use it to get results.
[0:33] So before we dive in, let's get on the same
page.
[0:36] In its simplest form, search engine optimization
comes down to content and links.
[0:40] And when I say links, I'm talking about both
internal and external.
[0:44] Now, content brings context to your pages.
[0:47] Links, on the other hand, act as "votes" to
show search engines
[0:50] that your pages are worth ranking.
[0:52] Most websites have two main types of content.
[0:54] First are informational pieces, which I'll
generalize as blog posts, interactive tools,
[0:59] and other useful non-commercial content.
[1:01] The second type of content is probably what
you want to rank the most.
[1:05] And that's "money" pages.
[1:07] Think of these as product pages for an ecommerce
store, landing pages for a services or SaaS
[1:11] based business, and sales pages for things
like online courses.
[1:15] Now, if you've ever tried building quality
links to these revenue generating pages,
[1:19] I'm sure you found it quite difficult.
[1:21] Generally speaking, people don't care to link
to things like product pages because it provides
[1:27] very little value to them and their audience.
[1:29] But they do link to informational content
like guides and reviews.
[1:33] And this happens because:
[1:34] a.) the external link may support a point
or statistic they're mentioning.
[1:38] And b.) it directs their visitors to helpful
content that they might not want to expand on.
[1:44] A prime example of this theory is HubSpot.
[1:46] If you look at their top 50 most linked to
pages, you'll see that 88% of them are blog
[1:51] posts and free courses.
[1:53] As a result, these pages have racked up huge amounts of authority.
[1:57] And that's where the "Middleman Method" comes
in play.
[1:59] On the far left, you have a bunch of websites
who might be interested in linking to your content.
[2:04] Let's call them "linkers."
[2:06] On the far right, you have your money pages.
[2:08] And we've already established, that the vast
majority of these people won't be linking
[2:12] to your "money" pages.
[2:13] So you add a middleman, which is your blog.
[2:15] And this is going to bridge the gap between the
linkers and your revenue generating pages.
[2:20] And as your middleman builds more authority,
it can pass that onto your "money" pages using
[2:24] internal links.
[2:25] And the result?
[2:26] More powerful money pages that should help
you rank and hopefully bank.
[2:30] Now, you might still have some questions like
"which pages do I link from and which ones
[2:35] do I link to?"
[2:36] Or you might be thinking...Sam!
[2:38] I don't have any authoritative pages.
[2:40] No worries. Because I'm going to answer the rest of your
questions right now.
[2:44] So step 1 is to choose money pages you want
to boost.
[2:47] You know your business best, so you'll have
to use your best judgement to choose pages.
[2:51] But if you're stuck, you can use this Venn diagram
to choose.
[2:54] The circle on the left are pages with the
most traffic potential.
[2:58] On the right are pages with the highest business
value.
[3:01] You probably want to look for pages that fall somewhere
in the middle of the Venn diagram,
[3:04] where a small SEO boost has the potential to lead
to significantly more traffic,
[3:09] and more importantly, revenue.
[3:10] A great place to look is in the Organic keywords
report in Ahrefs' Site Explorer.
[3:14] As you can see, I'm searching pages across
Ahrefs' entire domain
[3:18] where keywords are ranking in positions 5-10.
[3:21] And since we're looking for money pages to
link to, I'm excluding blog posts.
[3:26] Right away, you can see that both 'keyword
generator' and 'keyword rank checker'
[3:29] are in positions 9 and have commercial value to our
site.
[3:33] Another way to do this is to look in Google
Analytics.
[3:36] If you've setup ecommerce or goal tracking,
you can look through your reports for pages
[3:39] that have a good balance between traffic,
conversion, and revenue.
[3:43] Alright, step 2 is to find relevant 'middleman'
pages to link from.
[3:47] Now remember, the middleman is your blog.
[3:49] So we want to find pages that are both authoritative
and relevant.
[3:53] There are two ways to do this.
[3:54] The first is to do a Google search.
[3:56] So I'll search for site:ahrefs.com/blog to
narrow pages down to just our blog posts,
[4:02] then I'll type in the keyword I want to rank
for.
[4:04] So let's click on this page and then do a find for
"keyword generator."
[4:08] And you'll see a perfect place to link to
our keyword generator page.
[4:11] So we got relevance down, but at this point
there are only three pages that mention "keyword
[4:16] generator" as a phrase match.
[4:17] So let's change the query to search for the
topic "keyword research," since it's related
[4:21] to the page we want to rank.
[4:23] And now we have a huge pool of blog posts
to choose from.
[4:26] To get all of the SEO metrics for these pages, just
enable Ahrefs SEO toolbar,
[4:31] and then hit the Export button here to download a CSV file of Google's SERPs.
[4:35] Now, it's important to note that the toolbar will only download visible results on the page.
[4:40] So you can go to Settings, Search settings,
and set the Results per page to the top 100 pages.
[4:46] Now you'll have a nice CSV you can filter
through with all of the SEO metrics.
[4:51] In order to determine "authority," I recommend sorting the pages by URL Rating, which represents
[4:56] the overall strength of a page's backlink
profile.
[4:59] In general, the higher the UR, the stronger
the page.
[5:02] In fact, we've found a clear positive correlation
between a page's UR and its organic search traffic.
[5:07] The second way to do this is to use the
"Best by Links report."
[5:10] Just enter in the domain or blog subfolder
you want to analyze.
[5:14] Then go to the Best by links report.
[5:16] This report ranks pages of your target based
on the URL Rating.
[5:20] If you prefer, you can sort your pages by
the number of referring domains
[5:23] pointing at your pages.
[5:25] You can then use the Include search box to
search for relevant pages where you can add
[5:29] internal links to your "money" pages.
[5:31] Ok, so everything that I've shown you to this point works well if you have authoritative pages.
[5:37] But not all websites have these so-called
"High-PR" pages.
[5:41] So if you fall into the latter, then you're
going to have to build them.
[5:44] To do this, I highly recommend using the Skyscraper
technique.
[5:48] If you haven't heard of this link building
strategy, then here's what it looks like.
[5:51] You find an outdated piece of content that
has links and is relevant to the page you
[5:56] want to boost.
[5:57] You create something that's better.
[5:59] Then you reach out to all of the people linking
to the inferior page,
[6:03] and ask them to link to you.
[6:04] So the first step is to find a relevant and
outdated page that has links.
[6:08] You can do this in Content Explorer, which
has over a billion pages of pre-vetted content.
[6:13] Just search for a topic related to your "money" page.
[6:16] So if I were in the body building space, I
might search for "protein powder."
[6:20] Next, I'll set a requirement for the pages
to have at least 100 unique websites linking to them
[6:25] or some other high number.
[6:27] And this one seems promising with over 240
referring domains
[6:31] and the page is less than 200 words.
[6:34] Now, while word count isn't indicative of
a good quality page,
[6:37] 200 words just seems crazy low to me and is worth checking out.
[6:41] The next thing you need to do is create a
piece that's better.
[6:44] Now, better doesn't mean that you should go
and double the word count at a whopping 400 words
[6:48] or a post with 51 recipes over their 50.
[6:51] What you want to do at this stage is analyze
the page and find points of weakness.
[6:56] Can you create a more actionable guide?
[6:58] Can you make it more user friendly?
[6:59] Are there key points that are missing?
[7:02] Whatever "better" is to you and your industry... do it.
[7:05] So looking at the page, you'll see that
the images are basically stock photos that
[7:09] look like they've been spliced together.
[7:10] Also, there are no recipes on the page as
the title implies.
[7:14] Instead, they have the name of the shake,
a one-sentence description, and a link to
[7:18] a recipe that you have to click to get.
[7:20] So I think I could create a better user experience
by adding printable recipe cards, talking
[7:25] about the benefits of each shake and what
type of athlete should use them.
[7:29] Take an almond peanut butter shake as an example.
[7:31] I could mention things about how this shake
is packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats,
[7:36] which is great for whatever
type of person it would suit.
[7:39] The point is that you want to find legitimate
things that you would do differently that
[7:43] adds more value to readers and linkers.
[7:46] Finally, you need to reach out to the people
linking to this page.
[7:49] Just click on the caret beside the URL and
go to the Backlinks report, which shows you
[7:53] all pages that are linking to the target page.
[7:56] From here, you can set some filters to narrow
down your list of link prospects as well as
[8:01] study the anchor and surrounding text column,
which can give you context into how and why
[8:06] the page got a link in the first place.
[8:09] We have a full video on finding these types
of pages for link building, so I'll link that
[8:13] up in the description.
[8:14] After you've built enough links and your page
has gained some authority, you can use them
[8:18] as a middleman to pass authority to your money pages.
[8:21] But hey. Building an army of middlemen isn't
just about boosting "money" pages.
[8:25] It's likely that some of the content you create
will start ranking too.
[8:29] And if you've chosen a topic that's related
to your business, you'll get targeted traffic
[8:33] and most likely, more customers.

method." So leave a comment below.
