[0:00] [Intro]
[0:03] Hi everyone, Katherine Aragon here.
[0:05] In this video we're going to talk about how
[0:07] you can ethically steal organic search
traffic from your competitors.
[0:11] As you know, coming up with ideas for winning content is hard.
[0:15] So why would you want to brainstorm article ideas and invest the time to write them
[0:19] when you have no idea whether they'll rank in Google or not?
[0:23] A better plan is to look at your competitors' winning content
[0:26] and try to outperform it.
[0:28] Let's look at how you can do that.
[0:30] Step 1: make a list of competitors.
[0:34] Put your website into Ahrefs' Site Explorer.
[0:37] For this demo we'll use
expertvagabond.com.
[0:40] Then, open the competing domains report.
[0:44] This report helps you find your top competitors.
[0:47] It lists the sites that rank for the same
keywords as your target website.
[0:52] "Common" shows you how many unique keywords the
two sites have.
[0:55] "Unique" shows you the number of keywords unique to that website, whether yours,
[0:59] or your competitors. So you get a side-by-side comparison of your site and each
[1:04] competitor. Now scroll through the list
of competitors for sites that you want
[1:09] to research for content and traffic wins.
[1:11] You can export the list or just make a
[1:13] list of the sites you want to analyze.
[1:16] Here's the spreadsheet I put together for this demo.
[1:19] Feel free to use it as a template
for your spreadsheet.
[1:22] As you can see, I've made a list of ten expert vagabond competitors.
[1:26] And for this demo, we'll use adventurouskate.com.
[1:30] Step 2: find pages worth replicating.
[1:33] You're going to analyze each of the competitors on your list to find the pages that get
[1:37] a lot of traffic that you could
replicate on your site. And you'll start
[1:41] by clicking through to the overview page
for each competitor.
[1:45] You can do that by clicking
this caret and selecting overview.
[1:49] Now, you might be tempted
to go to the organic keywords report.
[1:54] It lists the keywords the site ranks for and its
[1:57] position, as well as the search volume
for the country you've selected.
[2:03] But this report isn't your best bet because
you're looking for pages to replicate;
[2:07] not keywords to target.
[2:10] The top pages report gives you all the
[2:12] same information, but it's organized by
the pages rather than the keywords.
[2:18] Notice that it sorts the pages by their
monthly search traffic.
[2:23] And you can easily see how many
keywords each page ranks for.
[2:28] Now, we're looking at the
[2:30] results for 'Adventurous Kate'.
[2:32] As you can see, the top ranking page is about where
[2:35] to stay in Paris.
[2:37] And this one page ranks for nearly three thousand different keywords!
[2:42] Rather than writing a lot of
articles targeting individual keywords,
[2:46] you can replicate just one page and potentially
rank for three thousand keywords,
[2:53] bringing in nearly two thousand visits per
month, like this one does.
[2:57] And that's what you're looking for. Pages with lots of
[3:00] keywords that also generate a lot of
organic search traffic. Because if it
[3:05] performs well for them, a similar page
will likely perform well for you too.
[3:11] So here's what you need to do now.
[3:13] Select a page that's worth replicating.
[3:16] Then put it into your spreadsheet.
[3:20] And then...
[3:21] Step 3: analyze the page's
referring domains and traffic.
[3:25] Not only do you need a list of the articles you're
[3:27] going to target, you also need to know
their monthly traffic, the number of
[3:31] referring domains, and their top keyword.
[3:34] And you can get all that information
from the top pages report.
[3:38] And it's really simple to do this. The URL of the
[3:41] page you're replicating goes in the
first column.
[3:44] The number of referring domains is in the second column.
[3:47] To find that number, click the caret and look
[3:50] under link statistics.
[3:52] In this case it's 25.
[3:55] So we'll add it here.
[3:58] Then in column 3, add the traffic which you'll find here.
[4:04] Then add the top keyword, so it'll be easier to sort
[4:07] through the list when you're ready to create a new page.
[4:12] Your goal is to do this for several pages, like this.
[4:16] Now why do we need all this information?
[4:19] Because without backlinks
your page won't rank and you won't be
[4:22] able to get as much traffic as your
competitors article gets.
[4:25] Not only that, as you'll see in a minute,
[4:27] to identify your best opportunities and quickest wins,
[4:31] you need to be able to see all this
information at a glance.
[4:34] Step 4: prioritize your workflow.
[4:37] You always want to start with low-hanging fruit.
[4:39] So begin with the articles that have a lot of
traffic, but a low number of referring domains.
[4:44] Then you can progress to the
articles that have more referring domains,
[4:48] which will need more time and
effort for link building.
[4:51] In your spreadsheet, look at the number of
referring domains and the traffic for each site.
[4:56] As you can see, this article
has more than 1500 monthly visitors and
[5:01] only seven referring domains.
[5:03] So this is the best article to start with.
[5:07] Always remember, replicating the
page is just half of this strategy.
[5:11] The other half is building backlinks so you can
not only steal traffic from your competitors,
[5:16] but possibly outrank them too.
[5:19] And one more thing, if you need help building backlinks,
[5:22] watch our previous video how
to build backlinks that push you to the
[5:25] front page of Google.
[5:26] It shows you how you can
replicate your competitors backlinks,
[5:30] just like we're replicating
their high traffic articles here.
[5:33] Okay, it's time to get to work!
[5:35] Let us know how it works for you.
