[0:00] I guess you could say I'm a hacker. [0:01] I can hack golf, [0:03] life, [music getting louder] [0:05] and traffic. [0:06] But I'm guessing what you're interested in most is traffic. [0:09] So in this video, I'm going to show you how to get traffic to your website backed with [0:13] 7 real-life examples, stats, and everything in between. [0:17] Stay tuned. [0:17] [music] [0:21] What's up marketers? [0:22] Sam Oh here with Ahrefs, the SEO tool that helps you grow your search traffic, research [0:26] your competitors and dominate your niche. [0:29] Now, if you're new to digital marketing and struggling to drive traffic to your website, [0:33] then you're in the right place. [0:34] Over the past 10 years, I have personally run countless experiments with both free and [0:39] paid traffic techniques. [0:40] But that's just me. [0:41] Combine that with some of the smart marketers here at Ahrefs, and we have decades of experience [0:46] to share with you today. [0:47] Now, if you're like me and you're tired of hearing advice like "use hashtags," then make [0:51] sure to watch until the end of this video because I am confident that there's something [0:56] valuable in here for everyone. [0:57] Let's get to it. [0:58] Quick sidenote: this video isn't meant to encourage you to look for hacky ways to get [1:02] more website traffic. [1:04] It's meant to encourage you to experiment and implement new tactics into your broader [1:09] marketing strategies and processes. [1:11] Alright, the first strategy is to use forums like Quora. [1:14] So, Quora is a popular question and answer forum where people ask questions, and anyone [1:18] can answer them and link back to their site. [1:20] But Quora in itself isn't some magical traffic vault. [1:24] In my experiment, I wanted to see how much traffic you could get to a brand new website [1:29] from just Quora. [1:30] And not just any traffic, but qualified traffic. [1:33] Meaning visitors will turn into leads and/or sales. [1:36] So I bought a new domain on October 27, 2016, threw up one answer that was linking to my [1:41] new domain and here are the results. [1:43] Around 48,000 users and 15,700 subscribers for a wholesale clothing line that didn't [1:50] exist at the time. [1:52] Alright, so conventional wisdom will tell you to search for a popular topic on Quora, [1:56] write a "great" answer and link back to your site. [1:58] But the biggest gap in this strategy is you have no way of knowing which pages on Quora [2:03] are actually generating traffic today. [2:06] But we do know that Quora gets a ton of traffic from Google - over 100 million monthly search [2:11] visitors according to Ahrefs' Site Explorer. [2:13] So what I did and what you can do is search for relevant keywords that Quora ranks for. [2:17] And once you find a page that's getting a good amount of consistent traffic from Google, [2:22] you can post your answer there and get some free exposure for your website. [2:25] Here's how it's done. [2:26] I'll go to Site Explorer and search for quora.com. [2:29] Then I'll go to the Top pages report, which ranks the pages by the ones that get the most [2:33] search traffic from Google. [2:35] Now, let's say that I have a blog on fashion and style. [2:37] I would just type in a general keyword in the Include search box to find relevant pages. [2:42] And the first two results look pretty legit. [2:44] One on colors that go with purple and the other about types of fashion styles. [2:49] Now, there are three very important things that I learned throughout my experiment. [2:52] #1. Context is king. [2:55] So in my answer, I had four links in total. [2:57] The first one was a link back to my personal blog on a business-related topic, the second [3:02] and third links were to other well-known wholesale sites, and the fourth link was to my experimental [3:07] landing page. [3:07] While I can't tell you how much traffic went to the second and third links, the fourth [3:11] and most relevant link had around 39x the traffic from Quora than the first link. [3:16] #2. The second thing I've learned is that a page's ranking position in Google can change quite [3:20] randomly and frequently. [3:22] So you want to find pages that have had steady traffic or are currently growing. [3:25] You can do this by clicking on the caret beside the URL you want to answer, and then go to the [3:29] Overview page. [3:30] Then look at the Organic search tab, where you can see the history of that page's traffic. [3:35] And this one looks pretty steady so I'd say that it's worth posting on. [3:38] And the last tip is to look at view velocity of the top answer. [3:42] If you're logged into Quora, then you can see the number of views each answer has earned. [3:46] So just take the total view count and divide it by the number of months from the time it [3:50] was answered, and you have a general idea of what you can expect if you were to rank [3:53] high for that answer. [3:54] Alright, the second strategy is to tap into untapped paid advertising platforms. [3:59] I get it. [4:00] You might not have a huge budget for things like PPC advertising. [4:03] But I'm not talking about the more popular advertising platforms like Google Ads or Facebook. [4:08] Both are great, but in my experiment, I wanted to test out some of the "less popular" ad [4:12] platforms like Pinterest, Yahoo Gemini, Outbrain, Taboola, and Reddit. [4:17] The two that worked particularly well for me were Pinterest and Outbrain. [4:20] Let me expand on my favorite ad platform - Pinterest. [4:23] The goal of my experiment was to see if I could pull off some good old affiliate arbitrage, [4:28] which meant to make more in affiliate commissions than I spend on ads. [4:31] Here are my results from Pinterest. [4:33] I spent around $17,000 and have earned around 2.5x that without doing much more than creating [4:39] an image, choosing some keywords, and paying my monthly dues. [4:42] Best of all, my total Pinterest spend hasn't been on just this affiliate site. [4:46] I've bought about 10,000 clicks to another site on a completely unrelated topic. [4:51] Now, I know that I haven't exactly spent millions of dollars, but I've played with Pinterest [4:55] enough to learn a few things: [4:56] #1. Traffic is cheap. [4:58] So with an average CPC of around $0.26 across all of my campaigns, it was a no-brainer for [5:04] me to push as much money in as the impressions would allow. [5:07] #2. Pinterest sends super qualified traffic from my experience. [5:11] The majority of their users are in the US and if you think about what people do on this [5:16] platform...they "pin" pictures of things that they want to make or buy. [5:20] In fact, Pinterest ads have converted better for me than Google Adwords, Facebook, and [5:25] Bing ads...combined. [5:27] Now, before you start advertising blindly, you should consider Pinterest's audience. [5:30] For example, a website that sells bags will likely do much better than a steel mill looking [5:35] for investors. [5:36] So how can you set up Pinterest ads? [5:38] It's literally just a matter of choosing an interest-based audience or entering a list [5:42] of keywords. [5:43] That's up to you to experiment with. [5:44] I won't go deeper into the affiliate strategy since that's outside of the scope of getting [5:48] traffic to your site. [5:50] But if you do want to see more about this topic, leave a comment and we'll go from there. [5:53] The next strategy is to update "out of date" content. [5:56] At Ahrefs, we have a ton of data on keywords and backlinks. [6:00] So we created this cool post showing the top Google searches. [6:03] A few months after publishing our post, we got thousands of free visitors from Google search. [6:08] But since people are searching for different things every month, the article went out of [6:12] date and rankings dropped. [6:14] So we decided to update the post in April 2018 and almost had a near instant spike in traffic. [6:19] And we updated it again in May, June, September, October, and now December for continual growth. [6:27] Here is how you can identify pages that could benefit from an update. [6:30] First, if your content is about a topic that requires "freshness" in the real world, then [6:35] it might be worth updating. [6:36] For example, a topic on the "best headphones in 2019" would likely need to be updated the [6:41] following year because manufacturers will continue to release new models and there might [6:46] be new brands that come to market. [6:47] And second, if you're starting to see your rankings fall, then it might be worth updating. [6:52] But don't be rash and jump to conclusions. [6:54] Just like in our "Top Google searches" post, you could see that we were losing rankings [6:58] and traffic. [6:58] So we figured that we had to keep it fresh to a certain extent. [7:01] The next traffic hack is to repurpose your content to different media types. [7:05] If you're going to put time into creating great content, then why not get the most mileage [7:09] out of it? [7:10] Repurposing content can easily double your reach and traffic. [7:13] Here are a couple of things we regularly do at Ahrefs. [7:15] On social media, we'll take some of our more successful list posts and repurpose them into [7:20] bite-sized tips on Twitter. [7:21] Now, this tweet has 23 retweets. [7:23] If we were to average half that number for all 75 tips, then that would equal 862 retweets. [7:30] We also take interesting points from our blog posts and share them on social media without a link. [7:35] This has resulted in way higher share rates for us and naturally, new people who have [7:39] never heard of our brand will look us up. [7:41] Another way that we repurpose content is to turn our blog posts into videos and our videos [7:46] into blog posts. Confused? [7:48] Let me explain. [7:49] Some people choose to literally turn a blog post into a video verbatim. [7:52] And that works to a certain extent because some prefer video over text and vice versa. [7:57] So at Ahrefs, we sometimes use the same topic on our blog and YouTube channel, but each [8:02] content format will have slightly different tips. [8:04] For example, our video on SEO tips was inspired by our massive post from our blog. [8:09] But you'll find that about 60% of the tips in the video are different from the blog post. [8:13] And our video series on WordPress SEO was actually repurposed to a blog post. [8:17] And both the video and blog post have performed well. [8:19] So how do you choose which content to repurpose and which ones to leave alone? [8:23] Two things. [8:24] First is to research keyword popularity on the platforms. [8:27] And second is a pretty self-explanatory rule called "does it make sense?" [8:31] So popularity of a keyword can easily be found using Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer. [8:35] Just select your search engine and enter in a keyword you want to target. [8:39] And you'll see that on YouTube, there are around 1,100 monthly searches for WordPress [8:43] SEO in the US and 7,000 worldwide. [8:46] Now, let's switch the search engine to Google. [8:48] And you'll see a good amount of searches each month around the world here too. [8:52] Now, does this strategy actually work for us? [8:55] Well, our blog gets around 220,000 monthly visitors from Google search alone. [9:00] And our YouTube channel got over 100,000 views in the last 28 days. [9:04] So yes...yes it does. [9:06] The next tip is to improve CTR on all platforms. [9:09] CTR stands for click-through rate. [9:11] It's the ratio of users who click on a specific link compared to the number of times the link [9:16] or advert is shown, which are called impressions. [9:18] Now, I want you to think about this for a second. [9:20] Let's say your page appears in 1,000 Google searches and 5% of people click on your result. [9:26] Then you get 50 visitors. [9:27] But let's say you could double your clickthrough rate to 10%. [9:30] Then you'll double your traffic too. [9:31] There are three basic parts that are responsible for enticing a click. [9:35] These are the title, the description, and the image. [9:37] And these are pretty straightforward. [9:38] You want to write something that sounds enticing, solves a problem or evokes curiosity. [9:43] And your image should support your main topic. [9:45] A great way to know which headlines to improve is to dig into your analytics. [9:49] No matter which platform you're using to get traffic, whether that be Google, YouTube, [9:53] Facebook or whatever, they should show you your click-through rates. [9:56] For example, if you're trying to get traffic from Google, you can use Google Search Console [10:00] to see the different queries people are searching for, how many times your web pages appeared [10:05] for the search query, and the percentage of clicks that your page got. [10:08] If you find that you're ranking high, let's say top three, yet your click-through rate is [10:13] abysmal, then it might be a sign to update your title to something more click-worthy. [10:17] We have a full video on optimizing title tags and headlines to maximize your click-through [10:22] rate, so I highly recommend watching that video. [10:25] But for now, we're going to move on to the last and in our opinion, the best way to get [10:29] free, consistent and passive traffic to your website or blog. [10:34] And that's SEO. [10:34] SEO stands for search engine optimization, which is the process of optimizing your pages [10:39] to rank higher in Google. [10:40] Just like I showed you before, we get over 220,000 search visitors to our blog alone [10:46] and nearly half a million Google search visitors each month to our website as a whole. [10:51] The thing with other traffic acquisition tactics is that some only work for as long as you're [10:55] willing to pay and others might have a short period of "virality," but eventually, it'll [11:00] die down. [11:00] This is what Rand Fishkin refers to as "the spike of hope" and it looks something like this. [11:05] You'll see hope and quickly be disappointed by the flatline of "nope." [11:09] Now, when you use SEO as a marketing strategy, the opposite tends to happen. [11:13] Your traffic should steadily grow. [11:15] SEO has a lot of moving pieces. [11:17] From keyword research to link building to on-page SEO and the list goes on. [11:21] So if this is something that you want to benefit from or improve, I highly recommend watching [11:25] one of our many SEO tutorials. [11:27] If you're new to SEO, then click here to watch our SEO for beginners video, and if you already [11:32] have the fundamentals down, then watch the video here, which is a little more advanced [11:37] and should help you get more #1 Google rankings. [11:40] But before you go, make sure to like, share and subscribe, and of course, if you have [11:44] any questions, leave a comment below. [11:46] Sam Oh. Out.
