[0:00] Internal linking is arguably the most
underrated SEO strategy.
[0:04] You don't have to ask anyone to link to you,
it's completely free with a 100% success rate,
[0:10] and internal links can actually
help you rank higher in Google.
[0:14] So today, I'm going to show you how to use
internal links to rank higher in Google.
[0:18] Stay tuned.
[0:19] [music]
[0:24] If you're new to SEO, internal links are
simply links from one page to another
[0:28] on the same website.
[0:29] And they're important for three main reasons.
[0:32] First, they help search engines like Google
discover new pages so they can be added
[0:36] to their index.
[0:38] Second, internal links help pass PageRank
around your site, effectively "powering"
[0:43] other pages.
[0:44] And if you're unfamiliar with PageRank,
it's a mathematical formula that tries to
[0:48] determine the "value of a page."
[0:51] And Google themselves have said that after
18 years, they still use PageRank to rank pages.
[0:57] And third, internal links help search engines
to better understand what a page is about.
[1:02] And they do this by looking at anchor texts
and the text that surrounds the link.
[1:06] So with these three things in mind -
crawlability, authority, and relevance -
[1:11] let's go through a few ways you can
boost your rankings with internal links.
[1:15] The first way is to create a logical
hierarchy in your site structure.
[1:19] Think of site structure as a mindmap.
[1:22] At the top, you'd have your homepage.
[1:24] Then you'd probably have main topics that
branch out from your homepage like your
[1:28] services page, your blog, and About page.
[1:31] Then from these main topics, you'd probably
have even more branches to other pages.
[1:36] Structure helps search engines to understand
the relationship between these pages, where
[1:41] branches are created using internal links.
[1:44] Now, this mindmap is pretty basic and
doesn't really give that much information
[1:48] to search engines.
[1:49] So let's build onto this example using an
internal linking strategy called content hubs.
[1:55] Content hubs are interlinked collections
of content about a similar topic.
[2:00] Basically, you create multiple pages on
a topic and its subtopics, then interlink
[2:05] between the pages.
[2:07] So if we zoom into the link building guide,
you might add more pages, like one about
[2:11] broken link building, resource page link
building, guest posting, and blogger outreach.
[2:17] And to create relationships between these
posts, you could link to these posts from
[2:22] your link building guide and also link from
your posts to your link building guide.
[2:28] Not only does this help to create relevance
between pages, but as each of these pages
[2:32] get backlinks, PageRank will flow to and from
each page within the hub, helping all of your
[2:38] pages rank higher in Google.
[2:40] We have a full video on how to create and use
content hubs, so I'll link that up in the description.
[2:46] Now, content hubs aren't for everyone.
[2:48] And if you've already created a ton of pages
without any kind of structure in mind, there
[2:53] are three easy and free ways you can
find internal linking opportunities.
[2:58] The first way is to use the "site" search
operator in Google.
[3:01] So let's say we wanted to add internal
links to our guide on search intent.
[3:06] I'll go to Google and search for site:ahrefs.com/blog
and then add the phrase, "search intent" wrapped
[3:13] in quotes.
[3:14] And now we can see all pages on our
blog that mention this phrase.
[3:18] So I'll click on our buyer's journey guide,
and do a find for "search intent."
[3:23] And it looks like it's unlinked, so it could be
a perfectly good place to add an internal link.
[3:28] The second way is to use the Link
Opportunities report in Ahrefs' Site Audit.
[3:33] All you have to do is sign up for a free Ahrefs
Webmaster Tools account, verify your site,
[3:38] and then you can run a free website audit.
[3:41] After your audit is complete, head on
over to the Link Opportunities report.
[3:45] This report shows you internal linking opportunities
based on keywords your pages rank for.
[3:51] So we show the page we recommend you
link from, the keyword that's mentioned on
[3:55] the source page, which is also the keyword
that the target page ranks for and the page
[4:01] we recommend you link to.
[4:03] On top of that we show the context of where
the keyword appears on the source page.
[4:08] Now, looking at an entire site's internal
linking opportunities can be overwhelming.
[4:13] So let's add a target page filter to our search
intent article, since that's where we want to
[4:18] add internal links to.
[4:20] Hit Apply, and now you'll see 23
internal linking opportunities.
[4:24] And unlike the Google search method, the internal
linking opportunities aren't dependent on exact
[4:30] match phrases.
[4:32] One other cool feature about this report
is that we only show internal linking
[4:36] opportunities where the source page
isn't already linking to the target page.
[4:41] So you'll find the suggestions
to be quite good.
[4:44] If you're new to Site Audit, we have a full video
on our free SEO tool called Ahrefs Webmaster
[4:48] Tools, so I'll link that up in the description.
[4:51] The last method is to look at your
site's power pages.
[4:55] Naturally, some pages will earn
more links than others.
[4:58] So they have more so-called "authority" they
can pass to other pages on your website.
[5:03] Again, if you have an Ahrefs Webmaster
Tools account, you can do this for free.
[5:07] Just go to Site Explorer and enter your domain.
[5:10] Then go to the Best by links report.
[5:13] Here, you'll see the pages on your site ordered
by URL Rating, which represents the overall
[5:17] strength of a page's backlink profile.
[5:20] Just skim through your pages and see if
there are any relevant pages where you'd
[5:24] want to link from.
[5:26] Now, whichever method you decide to use,
the most important thing to remember is that
[5:30] you don't need to force internal links.
[5:33] So I wouldn't bother linking from
irrelevant pages.
[5:36] And that also means that you don't
need to overdo it.
[5:39] Now, if you don't have any pages with link
authority, then I highly recommend watching
[5:44] some of our link building tutorials.
