[0:00] Welcome to the lesson #1: "The compound
effect of content marketing"
[0:05] As I promised in the introduction video, this
lesson is going to set the stage for the entire
[0:10] course and help you better understand why
I'm advocating certain tactics and angles
[0:15] over everything else.
[0:17] Here's the agenda for this lesson.
[0:18] We'll start off with what should be your
primary goal if you're blogging for business,
[0:22] not as a hobbyist.
[0:23] Then I'm going to break down three main
customer acquisition channels and explain
[0:27] how blogging expands them.
[0:29] And finally, I'm going to showcase one very
simple, but immensely important realization
[0:33] that keeps people away from rapid blog growth.
[0:35] So here we go.
[0:37] Part 1: The primary goal of blogging for business.
[0:39] In about two years we managed to grow Ahrefs
blog from nearly 15,000 visits per month
[0:44] to 150,000 visits per month.
[0:47] Do you think this result is good or bad, considering
that it took us nearly two years to achieve?
[0:52] Well, if you ask me, I don't really care
about raw traffic numbers that much.
[0:56] Traffic is a vanity metric.
[0:58] We never had a goal of growing traffic to our blog.
[1:00] Our primary goal has always been acquiring
new customers and growing our business.
[1:06] What's the point of going viral and bringing
hundreds of thousands of visitors to a blog
[1:10] if none of them will buy from you?
[1:12] It may be good for your ego, but not for
the bank account.
[1:15] So instead of trying to generate as much blog
traffic as we could, we focused our efforts
[1:19] on bringing highly targeted visitors, who
would convert into customers and bring money
[1:23] to our business.
[1:24] I know that content marketing teams love to
set themselves all sorts of nonsensical KPI's:
[1:29] Number of published articles per week;
[1:30] Number of blog visitors per month;
[1:32] Number of email subscribers per month.
[1:34] Well, if you ask me, these are all bad KPIs.
[1:37] They do make certain sense of course,
but they're secondary.
[1:41] Number of orders or sales per month.
[1:44] This is the primary KPI that you should care
about in the first place.
[1:48] You should treat your blog as a customer
acquisition channel.
[1:50] Not a traffic acquisition channel.
[1:52] Unless of course you make money out of raw traffic.
[1:54] Like selling banner ads for example.
[1:56] In that case more traffic will obviously bring
more money.
[1:59] But this course won't teach you how to create
a media empire and make money with advertising.
[2:04] I don't have any experience with that, so
I'm not qualified to create a course about it.
[2:08] This course is about creating the blog that
will drive customers to your business.
[2:13] This is what we have succeeded at with Ahrefs Blog
[2:16] and I'll be happy to share all our
tactics and strategies with you.
