[0:00] Hey, it's Sam Oh and welcome to the fourth module which is all about link outreach. [0:04] Now, in this module, we'll cover 3 link outreach approaches, the one that I recommend for [0:09] the prospecting approach we've already covered, and how to write these emails [0:13] for a link building campaign. [0:15] So let's get this lesson started and talk about the different link outreach approaches [0:19] and their pros and cons. [0:21] Now, there are traditionally two approaches to outreach. [0:24] The first is the shotgun approach. [0:26] This is when you send the exact same email to all prospects and the only personalization [0:32] field might be the prospect's name. [0:35] Now, the main pro of this method is that it's fast because it basically removes the vetting [0:39] stage of the link building process. [0:41] As for cons, you'll naturally spam people, burn bridges or taint your brand's reputation, [0:47] risk building links on sites you wouldn't typically want them on, and you'll likely [0:51] burn email addresses which can be a real problem if you're building links at scale. [0:56] The shotgun approach is a pure numbers game and it's worked effectively for a lot of people. [1:01] But personally, it's not for me because the potential negative impacts on brand [1:06] far outweigh any "quick wins" you might get from it. [1:09] The second approach is sniper outreach. [1:12] Now, this is literally the opposite of the shotgun approach. [1:15] The sniper approach is when you carefully pick pages and websites you want to get [1:20] a link from. [1:21] And rather than using cookie-cutter email templates, you'll send personalized emails [1:25] where your first contact may be to start a conversation rather than to get a link. [1:30] Now, the pros are that you'll get better links, potentially start relationships [1:34] that go beyond the one off link, and your link acquisition rates will probably be higher. [1:40] As for the cons: it's not scalable at all; it can potentially take months to get [1:45] a link; and it requires above average skills in negotiation, persuasion, and actually [1:51] understanding people's desires. [1:53] So for my personal taste, pure sniper outreach is too slow to grow in a popular industry where [1:59] links are a requirement. [2:01] But, I'll still do it for links that are tough to get or where the relationship is more [2:06] important than the link itself. [2:08] Now, you don't have to use either of these approaches exclusively – or any of them [2:12] for that matter. [2:13] If you think back to the previous modules in this course, I taught you how to find link prospects in [2:18] a very specific way – which was essentially to find and segment prospects by linkable points. [2:25] And if you followed along with this method, then you'll see that neither [2:28] of these outreach approaches are optimal. [2:30] For example, if you were to use the shotgun approach for these prospects, it wouldn't [2:34] make much sense because then all the upfront research and segmentation work [2:39] would be for nothing. [2:40] Similarly, the sniper approach doesn't really make sense either because each segment [2:46] of prospects has a lot in common. [2:48] So you don't really need to do 100% bespoke outreach for each and every prospect. [2:54] And this brings us nicely onto the link outreach approach I recommend in most [2:57] situations, which is the hybrid approach. [3:00] Much like the shotgun approach, you send emails to a large group of prospects. [3:05] And similar to the sniper approach, the emails are personalized to a degree. [3:09] And the personalization is usually based on a commonality among a segment – otherwise [3:15] known as a linkable point. [3:17] Hence, it's kind of a hybrid approach to link outreach. [3:20] The pros of this method is that you're able to send personalized emails at scale and [3:25] link acquisition rates from my experience are typically in the 5 to 12% range. [3:30] As for the cons, it can be quite difficult to consistently find seed prospects that [3:35] that are actually good. [3:37] Meaning, you need to be able to analyze data and creatively come up with angles [3:42] which sometimes won't work. [3:44] Now, regardless of the approach you use, the anatomy of the emails should more or [3:48] less be the same. [3:49] It's about finding a good reason for contact and providing a value proposition that will [3:54] resonate with a cold audience - and this is by far the hardest part of outreach. [4:01] So in the next lesson, we're going to dive deep into finding good reasons for contact and what [4:05] quote unquote, "value" looks like when sending outreach emails with the hybrid [4:10] outreach approach. [4:12] I'll see you there.
