[0:00] Part #2. The best content promotion strategies [0:03] I'm sure you have researched the topic of content promotion before and have seen [0:06] a ton of tactics, strategies and even so-called "growth hacks." [0:09] And just when you think you've learned it all, you stumble on a new case study showing you [0:13] how someone has generated a bazillion visits to their blog with a brand new amazing tactic. [0:19] Sounds familiar? [0:20] Well, you're not going to get any of that in my course. [0:23] First of all, it is very important to understand that there's no tactic or strategy that will make [0:28] an afwul piece of content popular. [0:30] The quality of your content always comes first! [0:33] And secondly, if your content is objectively awesome, it will promote itself. [0:37] Which is something that we have covered earlier in this course and I showed you qute a few [0:41] examples from our own blog. [0:43] So instead of pitching you some super-smart- secret-ninja-killer content promotion tactics [0:49] that will make you a superstar by tomorrow, I'm only going to briefly review a short list of [0:54] the most popular content promotion strategies and explain what they're good for. [0:58] In fact, most content promotion strategies can be organized in just six categories. [1:03] Reaching your existing audience. [1:05] Reaching relevant communities. [1:06] Content repurposing and syndication. [1:09] Guest blogging. [1:09] Outreach. [1:10] And paid promotion. [1:11] Let's review them one by one. [1:13] #1 Reaching your existing audience. [1:16] Generally, you do that by sending an email newsletter to your blog subscribers and posting [1:21] a link to your newly published article on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Pinterest and [1:25] any other social network where you have some following. [1:28] But if you're only starting out, your email list is super-small and you don't have a lot [1:32] of followers on these social networks. [1:34] Which means you cannot expect any traffic and backlinks to magically appear out of nowhere. [1:39] So it does make sense to start building your audience as early as you can! [1:44] If you invest time and effort into building your email list and your social following, [1:48] they will later become your most effective content promotion methods. [1:52] #2 Reaching relevant communities. [1:54] You can do that by submitting your article to relevant groups on Facebook, LinkedIn, [1:58] Google+, etc. [1:59] You can also submit it to a proper subreddit or any other relevant forums. [2:03] And finally, there's a new trend for creating Slack channels in different industries. [2:07] So you can join those and plug your articles there. [2:10] In theory, that sounds like a holy grail of traffic. [2:13] But once you actually try it, the harsh reality will kick in. [2:17] The thing is most of these communities hate self promotion. [2:20] You might get away with mentioning your article once or twice. [2:23] But if you overdo it, you'll almost certain be banned. [2:27] So instead of joining a hundred communities with a single goal to spam them with your content, [2:32] I'd suggest you to pick 5 or 10 of the very best ones and become an active member there. [2:36] Once the moderators notice that you consistently provide value to the community, they will [2:41] pretend they don't notice that you plug your own articles now and then. [2:45] And besides, if you make enough friends within each community, they will start plugging your [2:49] articles into conversations without you having to do that yourself. [2:53] #3 Content repurposing and syndication. [2:56] It's not too hard to repurpose your content into different formats (audio, video, slides, [3:01] images, etc) and then submit it to appropriate platforms. [3:04] Even if no one will ever find your content there, you still get a bunch of nice backlinks [3:09] to your article, right? [3:10] And besides, if the original content is awesome, why should the repurposed version be doomed [3:15] to oblivion? [3:16] Back in 2016 we have published a cool tutorial teaching people how to do SEO audit. [3:21] To this date, that article has generated over 60,000 visits. [3:25] But guess what, we also created a short 15-minute walkthrough based on that very article [3:30] and published it on YouTube. [3:32] That video has generated 10 times more views than the article - that's over 600,000 views. [3:39] In fact, a lot of the traffic to our article was actually generated by this video. [3:43] It ranks #1 in YouTube for the keyword "seo audit" and keeps generating more views and [3:47] more traffic to our blog every day. [3:50] I've also seen similar results from repurposing your content into a slideshare presentation. [3:55] And you might also consider repurposing the best articles from your blog into a podcast. [3:59] In other words, you should try a few of these formats and see what works best for you. [4:04] #4 Guest blogging. [4:05] I don't think I need to explain guest blogging to you, right? [4:08] In my opinion, it is one of the best ways to get high-quality backlinks and sometimes [4:13] even a bit of nice referral traffic to your blog. [4:15] I won't expand on this topic right now, as we're about to have a full section on guest [4:19] blogging in the very next lesson. [4:21] If you have a hard time getting published on other blogs, you can try answering relevant [4:25] questions on Quora or any other Q&A sites that exist in your niche. [4:29] Or you can simply leave comments on other blogs, referencing your own articles. [4:34] Most bloggers hate to see comments with links, but if the comment is genuine and the article [4:39] you're referencing is awesome - they might let it slide. [4:42] Other than that, you can also try to get cited by journalists. [4:45] There's a nice service for that, called Help A Reporter Out. [4:48] And we have a nice case study about it on Ahrefs Blog. [4:51] And finally, if you have already achived some noteable results in your industry you can [4:55] try pitching yourself to podcasts and interviews. [4:58] which often leads to quality links and refferal traffic with little time-commitment. [5:02] #5 Outreach. [5:04] This strategy is an absolute must. [5:06] If you don't have outreach in your content promotion checklist, you're seriously missing out. [5:10] The basic rule of thumb is to send personal heads up to everyone who was mentioned [5:14] or referenced in your article. [5:16] But don't ask them for links or tweets, it's your content that should be the motivator, not you. [5:22] An entirely different strategy is to reach out to everyone who has linked to similar content. [5:26] Or who has mentioned similar topics in their own articles. [5:30] These are very powerful outreach methods, which deserve special attention. [5:34] So the last lesson of this course is fully dedicated to outreach. [5:38] And we have one last group left. [5:40] #6 Paid promotion. [5:42] As discussed previously, paid promotion is an absoute must if you consider your blog [5:47] a business tool, not a hobby. [5:48] Almost every major social network has their own Ad platform - Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, [5:54] Pinterest, you name it. [5:55] I'm sure you're also well aware of Google's own advertising options. [5:59] These things are quite obvious, right? [6:01] A somewhat uncommon advertising option is a paid email newsletter. [6:05] In our own niche of digital marketing quite a few websites offer this service, but the price [6:10] per visitor is always way higher compared to Facebook Ads or even Google Ads. [6:14] So we have never paid to be included in someone's email newsletter. [6:18] And that wraps up my review of the most common content promotion strategies. [6:22] I hope that now you have a much clearer picture of how to promote your next piece of content. [6:27] Or re-launch the old one.
