[0:00] Over the last decade, I've tried dozens of link building tools. [0:03] Some that weren't very good, some that used to be great, and many that continue to be essential. [0:10] Now, you don't need dozens of link building tools to build backlinks to your site. [0:14] In fact, you only need a handful of tools to reach maximum efficiency and effectiveness. [0:20] So if you don't want to waste your time or money testing a million and one tools, [0:25] then keep watching because in this tutorial, I'll show you the 5 best link building tools, [0:30] my favorite features in each, and how they fit into the link building process. [0:34] Stay tuned. [0:35] [music] [0:40] Alright, before we get into the tools, it's important that we briefly discuss the 3 stages of link building [0:45] because these are the three areas where tools are going to help streamline your processes [0:50] and make your link building efforts more effective and efficient. [0:54] And these stages are prospecting, vetting, and email outreach. [0:58] So prospecting is the process of finding people who may be interested in linking to you. [1:04] And this can be for a variety of reasons like they've linked to a competing page, [1:08] they've talked about a relevant topic that you've created content on, or whatever. [1:13] Vetting is the process of evaluating whether prospects are actually people you'd want to [1:18] get a link from. [1:19] And beyond manually reviewing pages, you can use various criteria like the quality of the content, [1:25] SEO metrics like website authority and organic traffic, and content relevance to name a few. [1:31] And email outreach is the method link builders use to contact prospects to ask for a link. [1:37] So as we go through the tools, I'll explain where each tool helps and give you a preview into how it helps. [1:43] Alright, so let's kick things off with the first tool and that's Google search. [1:47] Google is one of my favorite prospecting tools because you get to search through the world's [1:51] largest index of web pages. [1:53] But because the index is so large, you'll need to use my favorite feature which are search operators. [1:59] And these will help you narrow in on specific subsets of pages. [2:03] For example, if you wanted to build links from resource pages, you can search for [2:07] something like inurl:resources.html and then a topic related to your niche. [2:14] Then you can visit the pages and see if there's a potential link opportunity for you. [2:19] Now, you can go way beyond well-known tactics like resource page link building by [2:24] identifying footprints. [2:26] And a footprint is simply a commonality among multiple web pages. [2:30] For example, I know that Muckrack has a ton of indexed pages like these where they show [2:35] major publications that journalists and authors have written for. [2:39] And the footprint is in the URL structure. [2:42] As you can see, all URLs have muckrack.com / the author's name / articles. [2:49] And the only dynamic variable here is the author's name. [2:54] So, assuming we wanted to find journalists for a digital PR campaign we can start by [2:58] searching for site:muckrack.com, which will narrow results down to just pages from Muckrack. [3:05] Then I'll add inurl:articles, meaning, all results must have articles in the URL, [3:12] and then I'll add a topic related to our niche which will search anywhere in the HTML code. [3:17] From here, you can build your list of prospects and pitch your story to people who might cover it. [3:23] Alright, the next tool is Ahrefs. [3:25] Now, while Ahrefs is an all-in-one SEO toolset where you can run a competitor analysis, [3:31] do keyword research, track keyword rankings, and perform site audits, [3:35] I want to focus on just one thing that helps in the link prospecting and vetting stages. [3:41] And that's backlink analysis, specifically to your competitors' pages. [3:46] To see the backlinks to a page, just paste it into Site Explorer and run the search. [3:51] Then go to the backlinks report. [3:53] And right away, you'll see all of the backlinks that point to your target along with SEO [3:58] metrics for the linking pages. [4:00] Now, if you don't have an Ahrefs account, you can use our free backlink checking tool to see [4:05] the top 100 backlinks to a target. [4:08] Now, backlink checking is just a way to find link prospects. [4:11] You have to manually filter through these to find prospects worth contacting [4:16] because people aren't going to magically link to you because you have a page on a similar topic. [4:22] Your chances of scoring a link increases if you actually have a good reason for contact [4:28] which brings us to how Ahrefs Site Explorer can help with vetting prospects without having [4:33] to actually visit the pages. [4:36] If we head over to the anchors report, you'll see all anchor texts used on backlinks that [4:41] point to this page. [4:42] And we have some generic ones related to the topic, which likely came as a result [4:47] of brand equity and a consistent high-ranking position. [4:50] But then you'll see this one on the 50/30/20 budget rule. [4:54] So let's click that which will take us back to the backlinks report with the anchor set as a filter. [5:00] And as you can see, they've gotten hundreds of links because of that one concept. [5:05] But it's actually a pretty outdated budgeting rule and I personally think that I have a better way to budget. [5:11] So if I were to create a competing page on how to budget, I'd include my method and reach [5:16] out to all of these people who are linking to NerdWallet because of their budgeting rule. [5:22] We actually have a step-by-step case study on how we used this method to create content [5:26] and build links to it, so if you want to learn how to execute on this, then I'll leave a link [5:31] to it in the description. [5:33] Alright, the next link building tool is Hunter.io. [5:36] Hunter is an email finding tool that'll help you find email addresses for your prospects. [5:41] And with a free plan, you can run 25 searches per month. [5:44] Now, this tool falls somewhere in between the vetting and outreach stages. [5:48] But nevertheless, finding emails for your prospects is critical. [5:53] So to find a person's email address go to the finder tool and enter the first and last [5:58] name of your prospect, as well as their domain name. [6:01] Run the search, and you might just see a handsome fella. [6:04] Now, I have two favorite features in Hunter. [6:07] The first is their API which helps to scale email finding like crazy. [6:12] And my second favorite feature is their Author Finder. [6:15] Just paste in the URL where your prospect is the author of the page, [6:18] and they'll search for the author's name as well as an email address. [6:22] Now, as you can see, this isn't the right email address. [6:26] And that brings us nicely to the next tool which is Neverbounce. [6:30] Neverbounce is an email cleaning and verification tool. [6:33] And it's main purpose is to tell you whether email addresses are deliverable or not. [6:39] Now, the reason why I recommend using it is because by sending tons of emails to [6:44] undeliverable addresses, you're going to negatively impact your present and future deliverability. [6:50] And if your emails aren't reaching prospects, then good luck getting links. [6:55] Now, the tool is free to try and then you'll have to choose a pay as you go option [6:59] if you want to continue using it. [7:01] And it's really simple to use. [7:03] Just paste in your list of email addresses and Neverbounce will tell you whether the email [7:07] is valid, invalid, catchall, or unknown. [7:12] Now, just like Hunter, my favorite feature in Neverbounce is the API. [7:16] You just write up some code, and you can verify your emails at scale. [7:20] And if you don't have a developer to work with, you can use Zapier to find and verify emails [7:25] in Google Sheets. [7:27] We have a full video on how to set this up, so I'll link that up in the description. [7:31] Alright, the next tool is Pitchbox. [7:34] Pitchbox positions themselves as an influencer outreach and content marketing platform. [7:40] And that's probably because they have a ton of features inside their tools. [7:43] But personally, I've only used their tool for link prospecting and email outreach. [7:49] Now, my favorite part of Pitchbox isn't so much in the features. [7:53] It's the fact that they've structured their email outreach module as a workflow. [7:57] And this works particularly well when you're working with larger teams. [8:01] And they've streamlined the outreach process in 3 steps: inspect, personalize, and compose. [8:09] The "Inspect" stage is where you'll do your initial vetting. [8:12] And you get Ahrefs' SEO metrics right beside the pages to help with that. [8:16] Now, in the "Personalize" stage, this is where you can look at your prospect's pages [8:20] and add any personalization fields for your actual email. [8:24] And writing the email is done in the "Compose" stage. [8:28] This is where you can write and send personalized emails to your prospects. [8:32] Now, Pitchbox doesn't have a free option available, so if you don't have the budget, then you can use [8:38] Hunter, which also has an outreach tool, or if you're the type to work with spreadsheets [8:43] then any other tool like Mailshake or Buzzstream will do the trick. [8:46] Alternatively, if you don't plan to scale your link building, then using a free Gmail account [8:52] with Canned Responses will do the trick. [8:54] Alright, the next tool is Screaming Frog SEO spider. [8:58] Now, this tool is a web crawler that's mostly used for on-page and technical SEO audits. [9:03] But I personally like using it more for link building. [9:07] Now, they have a free plan which lets you crawl up to 500 URLs, but the paid plan is [9:12] where my favorite features are. [9:14] And that's custom source code search and custom extraction. [9:18] So let's talk about using Screaming Frog for an unlinked mentions campaign. [9:22] Now, if you're unfamiliar with this link building strategy, it's when you find pages that have [9:26] mentioned your brand name or products but didn't link back to your website. [9:30] And it works really well because the authors are already familiar with your brand, they probably [9:36] like you, but they just didn't link to you. [9:38] So, to build my list of prospects, I'll search in Content Explorer for our brand name [9:44] but not from pages on our own site. [9:46] I'll also set a Domain Rating filter and a website traffic filter to narrow down [9:51] our list for the sake of prioritization. [9:54] Then, I'll choose the "One page per domain" filter since I don't need to reach out to [9:58] the same website multiple times. [10:01] Finally, I'll export the results. [10:03] Alright, so we have a list of pages that mention our brand, but at this point, we don't know if [10:08] they're linking to our site from the page. [10:10] So I'll open up Screaming Frog, hit Configuration, and then choose Custom search. [10:16] Next, I'll hit the Add button. [10:18] Now, for the Condition, I'll set it to "Does not contain," and I'll also choose regular expressions [10:24] as the search type. [10:26] Finally, I'll paste in some regex code. [10:28] So what this is going to do is search through the source code of URLs and tell us if they link [10:33] to any page on our website or not. [10:36] Let's hit OK. [10:37] Now, I'm going to paste the list of URLs that we exported from Screaming Frog [10:42] and run the crawl. [10:43] Now, when the crawl has completed, you can head over to the custom search tab, [10:48] and then filter for your custom search. [10:50] And now we have a list of hundreds of pages that have mentioned our brand [10:54] but didn't link to us on their page. [10:57] Now, these tools all work great for various tasks. [11:00] But they work even better when you integrate them into your link building systems. [11:05] Now, if you don't have a link building system yet, then I highly recommend watching our tutorial [11:10] on creating a scalable system before you mindlessly go off and buy a bunch of tools. [11:15] Now, these are just some of my favorite link building tools and in my opinion, [11:19] the only ones you need. [11:20] Let me know in the comments what your go to link building tools are. [11:23] And if you enjoyed this video, then make sure to like, share, and subscribe for more actionable SEO [11:29] and marketing tutorials. [11:30] I'll see you in the next one.
