[0:00] Part 2: How to generate keyword ideas using keyword
research tools
[0:04] There are quite a few awesome tools that help you
study what people are searching for in Google.
[0:09] Let me cover a few of the most popular keyword
research tools and explain how they work.
[0:13] So there's this tool called Answerthepublic
which is quite popular among SEOs
[0:18] and content marketers.
[0:19] Probably because of this highly charismatic
dude on their homepage.
[0:23] No, I'm just kidding, that's a really neat
free tool, seriously.
[0:26] Give it any word or phrase and it will return
a list of relevant questions that people put
[0:30] into Google.
[0:31] For example, if I type "cats" into the search bar,
[0:34] It will give me almost 200 questions that
contain the word "cats:"
[0:39] "can cats eat dog food," "where cats like to
be pet," "which cats sheds the least," etc.
[0:44] You're probably wondering, how does this
tool know what people are searching for?
[0:49] Well, the source of their data is very simple
- it's Google's Autosuggest feature.
[0:54] If you start typing your question like "can
cats," it will immediately show you some
[0:58] popular searches.
[0:59] And it you start typing the next letter, it will
give you suggestions based off this letter.
[1:04] That's where this little free tool gets their
search queries.
[1:07] As stated on their homepage, they use
Autosuggest feature in Google and Bing
[1:11] to give you keyword suggestions.
[1:12] Here's another similar tool that is based
on Google Autosuggest feature.
[1:16] It's called Ubersuggest.
[1:17] The difference between the two is that
Ubersuggest doesn't focus on questions.
[1:21] And all their keyword suggestions will start
from your seed keyword, as you can see here.
[1:26] Everything starts with the word "cats."
[1:28] Both of these tools don't show you the monthly
search volume of the search queries they suggest,
[1:32] but you already know where to get it, right?
[1:35] Now, onto the next keyword research tool.
[1:37] Which you probably know already.
[1:38] It's called Google Keyword Planner, and it's a part
of AdWords - Google's advertising platform.
[1:43] This tool used to be the single best source
for keyword ideas back in the days, but in
[1:48] recent years Google was taking more and
more data away from SEO professionals.
[1:52] So today Google Keyword Planner is a great
tool for advertisers, that want to pay for traffic
[1:57] from Google, but not so much for SEO professionals,
who want to get free traffic from Google.
[2:02] And yet, you can still get great keyword ideas
from Google Keyword Planner.
[2:06] If I enter the word "cats," I'll get a few hundred
cool keyword ideas, and the tool can even sort
[2:11] them into groups, which is rather handy and useful.
[2:13] The main downside is that you don't see monthly
search volume of these keywords.
[2:17] You only see ranges, which are not super helpful.
[2:20] And if you want to see the actual numbers,
you'll have to start an advertising campaign
[2:25] and put some money into it.
[2:26] But in any case, Google's own keyword research
tool should not be ignored, even though they
[2:31] limit the data that you get for free.
[2:32] And finally, let's look at the keyword research
tool that we have in Ahrefs.
[2:36] It's called Keywords Explorer and it runs on a
monstrous database of 4.6 billion search queries.
[2:43] We use multiple sources of data to collect
a database of this size.
[2:47] But the main one is clickstream.
[2:49] In short, clickstream data comes from a large
group of mostly free apps that you install
[2:54] on your computer and give them permission
to collect your browsing data, anonymize it
[2:59] and aggregate into a huge clickstream database.
[3:02] From this database digital marketers can then
learn what people search for online and which
[3:07] websites they visit.
[3:08] But there's no personal information on any
of these people.
[3:11] Clickstream data is literally a rescue to the SEO
community as many amazing tools and features
[3:16] can be built on top of it.
[3:18] So back to Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer.
[3:20] If I enter the same word "cats," I'll get
a list of almost a million search queries
[3:25] that contain the word "cats" in them.
[3:27] I guess when you compare this number of keyword suggestions to the number of keyword ideas in Google
[3:32] Keyword Planner you'll see why SEO professionals
are so mad at Google, right?
[3:36] But what do you do with a list of almost
a million search queries?
[3:40] Well, remember the previous lesson where
we talked about Keyword Difficuly?
[3:43] I said it's a great way to narrow down a huge
list of keyword ideas to those where you don't
[3:49] need any backlinks to rank.
[3:50] So let's put 0 in KD filter and see what we'll get:
[3:54] "when do cats stop growing," "can cats
eat bread," "do male cats have nipples."
[3:59] These search queries could easily be
answered with awesome blog articles.
[4:03] If I open the search results for "can cats
eat bread" search query I'll see that most
[4:07] of the top-ranking articles get a few hundred monthly
visits from search with almost no backlinks.
[4:12] Which looks like a great opportunity to me.
[4:14] And that was a quick overview of how to use
keyword research tools to get a ton of great
[4:19] keyword ideas to target on your blog.
[4:21] Just feed these tools with words and phrases
related to your niche and examine the output.
[4:26] And don't forget what we've learned in lesson #3.
[4:28] Always look at the total search traffic potential
of the top-ranking pages and how many backlinks
[4:33] they have.
[4:34] And please take action before you move
to the next strategy.
[4:38] Go play with the tools that I've just mentioned
and see how many awesome article ideas you'll
[4:42] be able to find.
