[0:00] Today I'm going to give you four blog post
templates to write better SEO content and
[0:05] increase your chances of ranking higher in Google.
[0:08] And the blog post types we'll cover include
list posts, step-by-step guides, definition posts,
[0:14] and beginner's guides.
[0:16] Let's get started with list posts or listicles.
[0:19] These are blog posts that contain
non-chronological lists such as tips,
[0:24] product recommendations, tools,
techniques, myths, mistakes, or whatever.
[0:30] Let's go through the different parts
of a listicle starting with the title.
[0:34] Plain and simple, you can
use any of these templates.
[0:37] Let's turn them into working titles.
[0:40] "11 Ways to Sneak Snacks into a Plane."
[0:42] "7 SEO Tips that Actually Work."
[0:45] "17 Productivity Tools That'll
Save You 3 Hours Per Day."
[0:49] "17 Reasons Why You're not Ranking in Google."
[0:52] "4 Blogging Techniques to Grow Your Audience."
[0:55] Or "8 Protein Powders for Bulking."
[0:58] That might be a lot to digest,
but the party must go on.
[1:01] Take a screenshot and
let's move on to the intro.
[1:04] Introductions in listicles often get
overlooked because people come
[1:08] for the list and not the intro.
[1:10] So your goal should be to build trust and
excitement in as few words as possible.
[1:16] For example, if you're doing a product roundup
on the "8 Protein Powders for Bulking,"
[1:21] then you might say:
[1:22] "Throughout my bodybuilding career, I've
tried and tested 8 different protein powders.
[1:27] Some of these tasted like trash
and contained low-quality protein,
[1:31] while others were the real deal.
[1:33] If you don't want to waste your money,
then keep reading because in this post
[1:37] you'll learn which protein powder is best
for bulking (based on data) on any budget."
[1:43] The intro is short and should build trust
and excitement because I'll be sharing
[1:47] real-world data.
[1:49] The last thing I recommend is to include
a table of contents with jump links.
[1:53] This makes it much easier for visitors to
navigate throughout your post, especially
[1:58] since listicles need to be skimmable.
[2:01] If you're using WordPress, there are plenty of
free plugins to choose from, just search for it,
[2:06] read some reviews if you fancy, and try one.
[2:09] Alright, on to the main content.
[2:11] In the most basic form, your main content
will have a series of H2s or heading tags,
[2:17] and content that complements the headings.
[2:20] Now, depending on the type of listicle
you're creating, your H2s will vary.
[2:25] For example, if you're doing a product roundup,
you might use the product names as your H2s.
[2:30] Alternatively, you can use H2s like
"Best Overall [product name],"
[2:35] "Best Cheap [product name]," etc.
[2:39] Whereas if you're doing a tips listicle, you'll
want to create more descriptive H2s to catch
[2:43] people's attention.
[2:45] For example, if your post was on 17 weight
loss tips, rather than having point 5 as
[2:51] "Eat Spicy Foods," you might put "#5.
Eat Spicy Foods to Burn More Calories."
[2:57] Now, as for the content that goes under
these headings, you may want to consider
[3:01] creating your own mini-template.
[3:03] For example, a product round-up might
have one sentence about the product,
[3:08] a section on what we liked best, what
we didn't like, and our overall rating.
[3:13] Consistency creates a predictable
reading experience for your visitors
[3:17] and it also helps you as a writer to
avoid tangents which break flow.
[3:22] So with a mini template in hand, it'll
just be a matter of filling in the blanks
[3:26] for each subheading and before you
know it, you'll be onto your conclusion.
[3:30] For list posts, I wouldn't overthink it.
[3:32] The majority of people aren't even going
to get here but it's still important to create
[3:37] closure for people who do.
[3:39] My recommendation is to briefly summarize a
key takeaway and then recommend additional
[3:44] content that's related to your post.
[3:46] And internal links are good to use because
they pass link authority and overall, create
[3:51] a better user experience for your readers.
[3:54] So here's a sample of what this template looks like.
[3:56] Feel free to pause or rewind to make
sure we're on the same page and then
[4:00] let's move on to the next blog post
template which is for step-by-step guides.
[4:05] Step-by-step guides are your typical
"how-to" posts where you run through
[4:08] a series of chronological steps to
teach how to accomplish something.
[4:13] Now, for the title, you can use one
of these formats to get started.
[4:17] So if we turn these into
real titles, they might be:
[4:21] "How to Build a Deck (7 Steps),"
[4:23] "How to Start a Business (Even
if You Don't Have Money),"
[4:26] "How to Find Email Addresses for
Link Building (Fully Automated)."
[4:30] Now, for the intro, write a short one using
the PSP method, which stands for problem,
[4:35] solution, and proof.
[4:38] For example, let's say you have a step-by-step
guide on how to do YouTube keyword research.
[4:43] Your intro might read:
[4:45] "Looking to grow your YouTube
channel and attract more views?
[4:48] The "trick" is to target topics with search demand.
[4:51] This is the approach that helped us grow
our YouTube channel from ~10,000 to over
[4:56] 200,000 monthly views in one year.
[4:59] Now, the reason why the PSP method is effective
is because people who are reading a step-by-step
[5:04] guide usually come with a problem.
[5:06] They're looking for a solution.
[5:08] And if you have proof of that
solution, you'll get their attention.
[5:12] Alright, so with the intro in the books, we
need to write the main content which will
[5:15] be your step-by-step instructions.
[5:18] And because step-by-step guides have
a logical sequence of instructions, you
[5:22] can use your H2s as the main steps.
[5:25] For example, our post on YouTube
keyword research might have H2s like:
[5:29] Step 1: Map out a hierarchy of topics
[5:33] Step 2: Generate keyword ideas
[5:36] Step 3: Check search intent
…and so on and so forth.
[5:41] As for the conclusion, just keep it short
and sweet because step-by-step guides
[5:45] tend to be quite long.
[5:47] Again, I recommend adding internal links
to other relevant posts so you don't leave
[5:51] readers who want more at a dead end.
[5:54] So from our hypothetical YouTube keyword
research post, we might link to our guides
[5:58] on YouTube SEO and getting more subscribers
on YouTube – both are relevant to YouTube
[6:03] keyword research.
[6:05] Here's a sample of what this template looks like.
[6:07] Feel free to pause or rewind to make sure
we're on the same page and then let's move
[6:11] on to the next blog post template which
is for the expanded definition post.
[6:16] Expanded definition posts are
somewhat similar to how-to guides.
[6:20] But rather than being written as a logical
sequence of steps, it's meant to give
[6:24] a high-level overview of a topic.
[6:26] Now, because these posts are expanded definitions,
you'll want to make your title something like:
[6:32] "What is or what are [concept or acronym]"
and then a additional details about your piece.
[6:39] For example, "What is an Oligarch:
Everything you need to know."
[6:44] "What are SERPs: Search Engine
Results Pages Explained"
[6:48] "What are NFTs? A Detailed Introduction
to "Expensive JPEGs."
[6:53] Now, the great thing about expanded definition
posts is that there's a clear format you can follow
[6:58] for the intro, main content, and conclusion.
[7:01] In short, you want people to come for
a definition and stay for the details.
[7:06] So for the introduction, you'll want to
keep it short and sweet by defining
[7:10] your concept or acronym.
[7:12] For example, our page on "What are
SERPs" immediately gives the definition,
[7:17] it shows a supporting image, and then
tells you what you'll learn in the rest of
[7:20] the post with jump links to each section.
[7:23] Now, for the main content, I highly recommend
spending some time on your outline because
[7:28] you only want to include the most important
points that a person searching for "what is
[7:33] [something]" would want to know.
[7:35] For example, if we created a post targeting,
"what are NFTs," you can start by searching
[7:40] for ideas in Google's People also ask box.
[7:44] So from this list, these could act
as potentially good subtopics.
[7:49] You can also look in the related terms
report in Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer.
[7:53] So based on these keywords, I'd probably
want to talk about the meaning of fungible,
[7:58] which is the F in NFT, I'd want to talk about how
you can buy an NFT, and how to invest in NFTs.
[8:05] Finally, look at the subheadings for top-
ranking pages for your target query.
[8:09] So this page talks about what they are,
how they're different from cryptocurrency,
[8:14] how they work, what they're used
for, and so on and so forth.
[8:19] So assuming we were creating a post titled
"What are NFTs? A Detailed Introduction to
[8:24] "Expensive JPEGs," we might have a main content
outline that looks like this, where our intro solves
[8:31] the "what" and the rest of the article will give
a decent introduction to the NFT space.
[8:37] Now, for the conclusion, you just
need to summarize the key learnings.
[8:40] And again, I highly recommend adding internal
links to other articles that a beginner would
[8:45] want to learn more about.
[8:46] Because if they've made it to the bottom of
your expanded definition post, they'll likely
[8:51] want to learn more since the content
will typically be high level.
[8:55] So here's a sample of what
this template looks like.
[8:57] Feel free to pause or rewind to make
sure we're on the same page and then
[9:01] let's move on to the next blog post template
which is for a beginner's guide post.
[9:06] A beginner's guide is an educational resource
that offers a comprehensive 101 to a topic.
[9:12] Now, this is kind of like a hybrid between
the step-by-step guide and the expanded
[9:16] definition post.
[9:17] It's detailed, it teaches people things
in a logical sequence, and it's written
[9:22] for beginners.
[9:23] Now, for the title, we want to create something
that'll appeal to absolute beginners.
[9:28] You can use any of these templates
to help you get a working title going.
[9:32] Let's fill them in.
[9:33] "SEO For Beginners: How to Rank #1 in Google."
[9:37] "The Beginner's Guide to Personal Finance."
[9:39] "The Noob-Friendly Guide to Potty Training."
[9:41] As for the introduction, I can't stress enough how
important it is to be mindful of your audience.
[9:47] You want them to know that whatever it
is you're teaching isn't super complicated.
[9:53] You want to use simple language
because true beginners probably
[9:56] won't know any industry or technical jargon.
[10:00] While this might sound limiting, beginners
are usually motivated and ready to learn so
[10:04] you want to make them feel like they
can understand it, learn from it, do it,
[10:09] and begin their journey in
whatever it is that you're teaching.
[10:13] For example, if our post was on the
beginner's guide to personal finance,
[10:17] I might write an intro like this:
[10:19] "You want to be financially secure.
[10:21] But with bills, children, retirement, and unexpected
expenses it might feel impossible at times.
[10:29] I get it.
[10:29] Personal finance can seem daunting
when you're reading about 401ks, IRAs,
[10:34] 403bs and [insert whatever number
or letter combination here].
[10:39] But you don't need to know every little
detail about these things to make and
[10:43] save more money.
[10:44] In this beginner's guide to personal finance
I'll walk you through a repeatable 7-step
[10:48] process so you can feel secure about your
future with no worries (hakuna matata)!"
[10:54] And then I'd add a table of contents
with jump links to the different sections
[10:57] in the content.
[10:59] Alright, let's move on to the main content.
[11:01] Just like in the expanded definition post,
you'll want to research the topic using
[11:05] a combination of the People also ask questions,
similarities among the top-ranking pages,
[11:11] and Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer.
[11:13] These will be your main subtopics.
[11:15] For example, if we were to do a beginner's
guide to SEO, our outline might look like this.
[11:21] These will most likely be your H2s.
[11:25] Now, unlike the expanded definition post,
we'd likely go into much more detail on
[11:29] these subtopics so the hierarchy
may need to be rearranged.
[11:33] For example, we might have "How to do SEO"
as an H2 and then the different categories
[11:39] of SEO techniques as H3s.
[11:42] In fact, we might even expand the link building
category, to have H4s with common link building
[11:47] tactics like guest posting, resource page
link building, and broken link building.
[11:52] And of course, we'd give a high level overview
of how to execute those link building tactics.
[11:58] Alright, let's move on to the conclusion.
[12:00] Here, you'll want to end off with some final
encouragement and like in every other
[12:03] template, internal links to further reading.
[12:07] This will help readers find additional
resources and it'll help you to stay in
[12:11] their learning journey.
[12:12] So here's a sample of what
this template looks like.
[12:15] Feel free to pause or rewind to
make sure we're on the same page.
[12:19] Now, if you're fairly new to SEO content writing
or some of the outline stuff was a bit tough to
[12:23] follow, I highly recommend watching our
full tutorial on content writing for SEO
[12:28] where you'll learn how to write content
that's optimized for search.
[12:32] We also have a full SEO course for beginners
that'll teach you how to get organic traffic to
[12:36] to your site.
[12:37] I'll link some videos in the description
and I'll see you in the next tutorial.
