[0:00] Hey, it's Sam Oh and welcome to the second lesson in the link prospecting module. [0:04] In this lesson, we're going to talk about how to grow your list of prospects with [0:07] "lookalike prospects." [0:09] And the name "lookalike prospects" is inspired by lookalike audiences which [0:13] is commonly used in online advertising. [0:16] Now, if you're unfamiliar with lookalike audiences, ad platforms like Google and Facebook let you target [0:22] people who are similar to an existing audience. [0:25] For example, people that are like your customers or website visitors. [0:30] And by targeting these lookalike audiences, you're able to reach new people who are likely [0:35] to be interested in your business because they share similar characteristics to your [0:39] existing customers or website visitors. [0:43] Now, lookalike prospects in link building are very much the same. [0:46] You're trying to find people who are similar to a seed prospect – which is something we [0:50] covered in the previous lesson. [0:52] But as a refresher, seed prospects are people who link to a page for a specific reason. [0:58] And these specific reasons are what I call "linkable points," which are usually identified [1:03] by patterns in a competing page's link profile. [1:06] Best of all, these linkable points help us define our pitch angles. [1:11] Now, if this went over your head, then I highly recommend watching lesson 2.1. [1:15] on finding seed prospects so you can get the most value from this lesson. [1:20] Alright so there are 3 tools I use to find lookalike prospects. [1:24] The first is Ahrefs. [1:25] More specifically, Ahrefs Site Explorer, Content Explorer, SEO toolbar, and batch analysis. [1:31] The second tool is Google and the third is the Scraper Chrome Extension. [1:36] With that said, let's go through some examples of finding lookalike prospects based on a seed. [1:41] And we'll continue with the examples we discussed in the previous lesson. [1:45] Alright, the first example is for our SEO statistics page. [1:49] When we were creating this page, we analyzed a competing page's anchors report in Ahrefs [1:53] Site Explorer. [1:54] And we noticed a pattern that the majority of links to this page were because of a specific stat. [2:00] Now, when we went to visit these competing pages, we noticed that a lot of the stats that [2:03] were in the anchors report weren't even on the page or they were just super outdated. [2:09] So we had a couple pitch angles to run with. [2:12] Now, usually when you find these patterns or linkable points in a competitor's backlink [2:16] profile, you'll likely want to get an understanding of the breadth of the opportunity. [2:20] And this will help you gauge whether it'll be worth your time and effort to pursue it. [2:24] The easiest way to do that is to look for a footprint within the pattern. [2:28] And a footprint is just a common mark among a dataset. [2:32] So in this case, the footprint would be the percent sign. [2:36] Now, with footprint in hand, we can go to the backlinks report and use [2:39] the filters to narrow in on relevant opportunities. [2:42] And because our footprint is a percent sign in the anchor or surrounding text of the backlink, [2:47] I'll type that into the search box and choose anchors with surrounding text [2:52] as the search mode. [2:53] And as you can see, there are around 1,800 pages from unique websites that link to this [2:59] page because of a specific stat. [3:02] That's a pretty nice opportunity in my opinion. [3:04] Now, we didn't stop here. [3:06] We also looked at other anchors profiles for other top ranking pages that had a significant [3:11] number of referring domains. [3:13] And we basically just did the exact same thing and found well over 3,000 lookalike [3:18] prospects to our seed. [3:20] Alright the next example was when we found an opportunity for our link building guide. [3:25] What we noticed was that a competing page was getting backlinks because they used to [3:29] have a downloadable ebook in their link building guide. [3:32] And like the previous example, there was no CTA or mention of a downloadable ebook on the page. [3:38] Now, the pattern I noticed is that all of the referring pages are on the topic of [3:42] "top seo ebooks." [3:44] So that means our seed prospects are people who have a listicle on the top SEO ebooks. [3:51] So what we need to search for are titles of pages that include the word "best or top," [3:56] which implies a listicle and "seo ebooks," which implies the main topic. [4:02] So to find our lookalike prospects, we can use Google search or Ahrefs' Content Explorer. [4:07] In Google search, you can type in something like intitle:best intitle:seo intitle:ebook. [4:16] And we're left with a few hundred results. [4:19] Now, you can enable Ahrefs' SEO toolbar to get both domain and page level metrics on the results. [4:25] And if you prefer to work in Excel or Sheets, you can export the SERP as needed. [4:30] But this job is much easier if you use Ahrefs' Content Explorer. [4:34] So I'll search for "best OR top" within parentheses, and then SEO ebook. [4:40] Finally, I'll change the search mode to Title and run the search. [4:44] And now you can see a few hundred results along with their SEO metrics. [4:48] And this report is also filterable and exportable too. [4:52] Now, if you want to further expand your list of lookalike prospects, you can simply [4:55] change the word "SEO" to something like marketing since link building is a smaller [5:00] part of the broader marketing category. [5:03] And now we have well over 1,000 prospects in total for this campaign. [5:07] Alright, the final seed we talked about was for our page that debunks myths [5:11] behind so-called "LSI keywords." [5:15] Now, we established that our seed prospect is any page that recommends using LSI keywords, [5:20] because there's no such thing as LSI keywords. [5:23] And while there were a few hundred prospects in the link profile we looked at in lesson 2.1, [5:28] we can easily find a bigger list of lookalike prospects using Content Explorer. [5:32] So this time, I'm going to search for "use LSI keywords" as a phrase match, which should [5:37] surface pages where authors are recommending visitors to use so-called LSI keywords. [5:43] And now we have thousands of prospects who've said this phrase on their page. [5:47] So it would just be a matter of vetting these pages and we'll get into this in the next module. [5:52] Now, these are just a few methods that I would use to find lookalike prospects for [5:56] these hypothetical campaigns. [5:58] And while there are other ways to generate similar results, I won't bother going into them [6:02] because the most important part of this exercise is to understand [6:06] how seed prospects help to broaden the scope of your campaign with lookalike prospects. [6:12] Now, there's one more technique to finding lookalike prospects I want to talk about. [6:16] And it's not so much about finding them necessarily, but it's an efficient technique [6:20] that I find myself using pretty frequently. [6:23] And that's scraping. [6:25] There are going to be times when you're browsing the web and you [6:27] notice a potential seed that's worth exploring. [6:30] For example, I was looking for ways to build links to our SEO course landing page in Ahrefs Academy. [6:36] And I went through the usual routine of analyzing the backlink profiles of competing pages. [6:41] Now, this was all well and good, but then I happened to find another low-hanging [6:44] opportunity that none of our organic search competitors would be able to do. [6:49] And I discovered it in YouTube analytics. [6:52] I realized that our SEO course videos had gotten over a million views in less than a year. [6:57] So I was like… man… I'm sure someone has linked to these videos or embedded it in their [7:02] posts at some point. [7:04] Meaning, these are warm prospects who I could reach out to and ask to link to our [7:09] academy instead. [7:11] Basically, my idea followed a similar concept to unlinked mentions, which usually has a pretty [7:16] high conversion rate for us. [7:18] So I ran the video URL in Ahrefs' Site Explorer, and sure enough, this video had collected a ton [7:24] of referring domains. [7:26] And I also checked the embed URL for this same video in Site Explorer. [7:30] And there were even more referring domains to sort through. [7:34] So our seed prospect for this hypothetical campaign is anyone linking to one of our [7:38] SEO course videos on our YouTube channel. [7:41] Or anyone that's embedded the video on their page. [7:45] Now, because there's a total of 15 videos of this course on our YouTube channel, [7:49] I needed to get all of the URLs so I can run them through a tool like Ahrefs' Batch Analysis. [7:55] And to do that, I used the Chrome Scraper Extension. [7:58] All you need to do is right click on the information you want to scrape [8:02] and click "Scrape similar." [8:04] From here, I modified the Xpath code a bit and within seconds, we had a full list of [8:10] URLs ready to batch analyze. [8:13] Finally, I ran the URLs through Ahrefs' Batch Analysis, sorted by Referring Domains, and I [8:19] could instantly see that we had a huge list of lookalike prospects [8:23] that might be willing to link to our academy page. [8:27] As you can see, finding lookalike prospects is all about finding a footprint within your seed [8:32] and following the rabbit hole. [8:34] And when you have a general scope of the breadth of the campaign, you're able [8:38] to get an idea if actually running the campaign will be worth your time and effort. [8:43] Now, when you're dealing with thousands of potential link prospects with multiple seeds, [8:48] it can get quite messy. [8:49] Plus, sending personalized emails at scale is tough. [8:53] And that's where segmenting your link prospects is going to help you stay organized, [8:58] convert more emails into links and save you a ton of time. [9:02] So in the next lesson, we're going to talk about how you can effectively segment [9:05] your prospects so you can scale personalized outreach campaigns. [9:09] I'll see you there.
