[0:00] Today, I'm going to show you some of the best keyword research tips to find revenue-generating [0:04] topics for your affiliate site. [0:06] Stay tuned. [0:06] [music] [0:11] Not all traffic to your website is going to lead to affiliate commissions. [0:15] Some pages will go on to generate hundreds of dollars, others tens of thousands of dollars, [0:20] and some won't even generate a dime in commissions. [0:23] Now, the thing with affiliate marketing is that you shouldn't forcefully plug products [0:28] just for the sake of getting a commission. [0:30] People aren't going to click a link just because it's there. [0:33] You need to find topics that a) get searched in Google, YouTube or whatever search engine [0:39] you're optimizing for; [0:40] and b) topics where it's natural to plug product recommendations. [0:45] So before we get into the tactics, it's important you understand the concept of "searcher intent." [0:51] Search intent tells us about the purpose of a searcher's query and it'll determine whether [0:55] you can organically recommend products. [0:58] For example, if someone searches for "best protein powder," chances are they're in [1:03] the market to purchase a product but they want to weigh out the pros and cons, [1:07] look at different brands, and assess variables like price, quality, and so on. [1:13] As a result, these searchers are more likely to click an affiliate link in that post [1:18] and possibly make a purchase. [1:21] Whereas a topic like "what is protein powder" is more informational in nature. [1:25] So based on the keyword alone, we don't know whether the searcher is writing a research paper, [1:30] is exploring the world of supplements, or wants to know which type of protein powder to buy. [1:36] Simply put, this topic probably wouldn't generate many clicks to protein powder products because [1:42] the majority of people aren't in the market to buy it. [1:45] So with that in mind, we'll talk about four different types of affiliate keywords and [1:49] how they fit into an affiliate marketing site. [1:52] And these are: [1:53] general comparisons; branded comparisons; [1:56] product reviews; and T&A keywords. [1:59] Let's go through the value of each type and I'll show you how to find tons of opportunities [2:04] in virtually any affiliate niche. [2:06] Now, for the purposes of this tutorial, let's say we're working on a site that promotes products for babies. [2:12] Alright, the first type of keywords are general comparisons. [2:15] These are your typical "best [product name]" keywords. [2:18] For example, "best strollers," "best carriers," "best baby bottles," etc. [2:25] These types of keywords are super-easy to recommend products because that's essentially [2:29] what the post is about. [2:31] The keyword "best" implies that there are comparisons that need to be made. [2:35] On top of that, people searching for these "best [product name]" keywords are likely [2:40] in the market to purchase something in the near future. [2:43] Why else would they be looking for product comparisons? [2:46] So to find these keywords, you'll need a keyword research tool. [2:49] And obviously, I'll be using Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer. [2:52] So I'll start off by searching for a broad keyword like "baby." [2:56] Next, I'll go to the Phrase match report since we want to generate keyword ideas. [3:01] And since we're looking for general comparison keywords, I'll click the Include filter and type in [3:06] "best," which will show us keywords that include the words "best" and our seed keyword "baby." [3:13] And right away, we have a massive list of great comparison topics. [3:17] Now, since there are over 110,000 keyword ideas, we can narrow down the list to just [3:22] low-competition topics using the Keyword Difficulty filter. [3:26] So let's set a maximum Keyword Difficulty score to something low like 10. [3:31] And there are some great topics here that are worth considering. [3:35] Now, it's important to note that you shouldn't just go after keywords with low KD scores. [3:40] As you may have noticed, our set of low-difficulty topics are reviewing cheaper products like [3:46] "baby bath tubs," "lotions," and "wraps." [3:49] So while these can help you generate revenue, it'll be very much a volume's game. [3:54] Whereas products with a higher price tag, like "best car seats," will usually be more competitive. [4:00] But there's a way to actually find keywords that target higher ticket items while still [4:04] being relatively low-competition. [4:07] And these are topics that target a specific person or need. [4:11] And the general format for these keywords will be "best [product name] for [user]." [4:17] For example, "best car seat for small car" or "best carrier for newborn." [4:23] So let's go back to Keywords Explorer and this time, I'll enter a few higher-priced items [4:27] like "car seat," "stroller," and "crib." [4:31] Again, I'll go to the Phrase match report. [4:34] And finally, I'll click the Include filter and type in "best," "for." [4:40] Now, since the "All words" tab is chosen, it's going to show us keywords that include [4:44] one of our high-ticket products, and both of our included words. [4:49] And now you'll see keywords like "best convertible car seat for small cars," "best car seat for 5-year-old," [4:55] and so on. [4:57] Now, a KD of 28 isn't exactly "low." [5:00] But if you click on the SERP button, you'll see that some pages are specifically targeting [5:04] "convertible seats for small cars." [5:07] And despite having lower website authority and fewer referring domains, they're still outranking [5:13] some of the more authoritative generic pages. [5:16] So this could potentially be a great keyword opportunity for our baby site. [5:20] Alright, the next type of keywords are branded comparisons. [5:24] These are keywords where a searcher wants to compare the differences between [5:27] two branded products. [5:29] For example, that might be "beats studio wireless vs bose qc35." [5:35] These types of keywords usually have lower search demand, but they convert very well [5:39] because the searcher has likely narrowed down their purchasing decision to a few products. [5:45] The easiest way to find these keywords is to create your own list of brands and put [5:49] it into a keyword research tool. [5:51] So assuming I wanted to find stroller comparisons, I could search for "bugaboo," [5:56] "city select," and "uppababy." [5:59] Next, I'll go to the Phrase match report. [6:02] And again, I'll go to the Include search box, [6:04] and this time, I'll type in "vs.," since we're looking for comparison keywords for any [6:09] of these brands. [6:10] So something like "uppababy cruz vs. vista" would seem like a really low-hanging topic [6:16] seeing as these strollers retail for $500 to over $1,000! [6:21] And looking at the SERP, you'll see that the top ranking pages come from low DR sites [6:25] and have few referring domains. [6:27] So it looks like they can be beaten quite easily. [6:30] Now, if the company you've inputted makes multiple types of products like strollers, [6:35] car seats, and bottles, then it may be better to input model names as your seed keywords, [6:40] like "uppababy cruz," "uppababy vista," and so on. [6:44] Alright, the next type of keywords are detailed product reviews. [6:48] These would be keywords like "bose qc35 review" or "uppababy vista review." [6:54] Searchers that are looking for reviews on these topics are probably very close to [6:58] making a purchase. [6:59] They've researched multiple products, something caught their attention about a specific model, [7:05] and now they want a more in-depth review on it. [7:08] Now, just like the branded comparison keywords, search volumes will be lackluster to say the least. [7:13] So, if you're going to buy these products and actually review them, you'll want to make sure [7:17] you're reviewing products that people are actually searching for. [7:21] A simple way to find brands and models worth reviewing is to go to a popular Ecommerce site [7:27] and look through the different categories and brand names in their navigation. [7:30] So right now, I'm on buybuybaby.com and I'm looking at their "Shop all car seats" page. [7:36] Now, if I click on the dropdown for Brand, you'll see a list of brand names that you [7:40] can jot down. [7:41] So I've already gone ahead and done that and saved a list to my clipboard. [7:45] So I'll paste 10 of those into Keywords Explorer and run the search. [7:49] And let's head over to the Phrase match report and we'll hit the Include filter again, but this time [7:54] we'll search for "review" with an asterisk, which will act as a wildcard. [7:59] And now we know exactly which brands we'd want to review, and some specific models [8:04] which you now have keyword metrics for. [8:07] So by this point, you should have enough topics where it's easy to include product recommendations. [8:12] Now, the last type of keyword probably won't directly contribute to revenue, but it serves [8:18] an important purpose. [8:20] And these are T&A keywords, which stands for Trust and Authority. [8:25] In order to rank your pages, you need to have some kind of page-level and/or website authority. [8:31] Meaning, you need backlinks. [8:33] But unfortunately, all of the keyword types we've discussed so far are commercial in nature, [8:38] making it tougher to get links to these pages. [8:41] I mean, would you rather link to a post of 10 random kitchen knives or one on how to [8:46] sharpen a kitchen knife? [8:48] Probably the latter, right, seeing as it's non-commercial and provides more [8:52] objective value for your audience. [8:54] So creating non-commercial content with the intent to educate and inform your visitors is [8:59] helpful in two ways. [9:01] #1. You build trust with your audience; [9:04] and #2. You build authority through links. [9:07] And that's where T&A topics come into play. [9:10] The purpose of these topics are to provide useful information to your audience and [9:14] a linkable resource for bloggers. [9:17] So to find these keywords, let's search for a few seeds that are related to our baby site. [9:21] So I'll type in "parenting," "toddler," and "newborn." [9:26] Next, I'll go to the Questions report since these will all be informational topics. [9:31] Finally, I'll set a minimum Keyword Difficulty filter to something high like 40. [9:36] And the reason why I'm setting a high minimum KD is because Ahrefs' Keyword Difficulty metric [9:41] is based on unique websites linking to the top 10 pages. [9:45] And now we have a list of topics where we know the top 10 pages have lots of links [9:50] pointing at them. [9:51] You just need to decide whether the topics would be useful to your target audience, look [9:55] at the SERP, and then analyze some of the backlink profiles of the top-ranking pages. [10:00] Now, even though visitors to these pages may not be ready to make a purchase right then [10:05] and there, you can link internally to relevant money pages, which should give your revenue- [10:10] generating posts a boost in rankings. [10:13] And we have a full video on this SEO strategy, called "the middleman method," so I'll link [10:17] that up in the description. [10:18] So by now, you should be able to find more than enough topics to fill up your affiliate [10:22] site's content calendar. [10:24] But before you do that, I strongly recommend watching our full keyword research tutorial [10:29] where you'll learn how to assess ranking difficulty and choose topics based on traffic potential. [10:35] Which are two things you should be doing for every topic you target.
