[0:08] Do you always need backlinks to rank?
[0:10] How to create content that attracts backlinks.
[0:12] And finally, the rarely-mentioned "secret"
to acquiring backlinks.
[0:17] So let's go!
[0:18] Part #1. Do you always need backlinks to rank?
[0:22] This is a tricky question to answer.
[0:23] So let's just start off with a few facts.
[0:26] Fact #1: Google's Andrey Lipattsev has revealed
[0:29] that backlinks are one of Google's top 3 ranking signals;
[0:33] Fact #2: The majority of SEO professionals
agree that it's not possible to rank in Google
[0:39] without any backlinks.
[0:40] And Fact #3: There were quite a few SEO research
studies that showed a rather notable correlation
[0:46] between the number of backlinks pointing to a page
and the position of that page in Google search results.
[0:52] A while ago we even performed our own correlation
study here at Ahrefs.
[0:56] We analyzed the search results for nearly
2 million random search queries and discovered
[1:01] that backlink factors correlate with Google
position a lot better than any other factor.
[1:06] Even the usage of an exact match keyword in
title, headline or even actual content of that
[1:11] page had a weaker correlation.
[1:13] So, it seems that everything is in favor
of backlinks, right?
[1:17] Well, in that case, why did ⅓ of SEOs in
my poll voted that you can rank in Google
[1:23] without any backlinks?
[1:24] That's because the question itself is tricky.
[1:27] Can you rank in Google without backlinks?
[1:29] This is not a "Yes or No" question.
[1:31] The only correct answer here is "it depends."
[1:35] So let me explain what caused such contrasting
opinions with a nice example.
[1:39] I'm a big fan of a video game called Fallout,
and I also have a unhealthy habit to research
[1:44] anything and everything in Ahrefs.
[1:46] So when I discovered that there was a Wikipedia
for everything Fallout, I naturally dropped it into
[1:51] Ahrefs to see what was going on there.
[1:53] Turns out this website is generating over 20
million visits from Google every single month!
[1:58] Which is quite an impressive number.
[2:00] So the next two things that I wanted to find
out were:
[2:03] How many pages are responsible for this
huge search traffic?
[2:06] And how many backlinks do they have in total?
[2:09] I can see the number of linking websites right
on the Overview report of Site Explorer tool.
[2:13] It says 7,500.
[2:15] And in order to see the number of pages that
are bringing them traffic from search I need
[2:19] the Top Pages report, which can be found
under Organic search section.
[2:23] It defaults to US, so I switch to All countries
and get over 65,000 pages that are generating
[2:30] search traffic to this website.
[2:31] So what do we have here?
[2:33] Over 65,000 pages with search traffic;
[2:36] And only 7,500 linking websites.
[2:39] Do you see where I'm going with this?
[2:41] By looking at these two numbers you realize
that there's absolutely no way that every page
[2:47] with search traffic has backlinks, right?
[2:50] Let's see if that is the case.
[2:51] I'm going to search for pages about Fallout
bobblehead figures (because I actually have
[2:56] a few of them on my work desk).
[2:57] As you can see from the RDs column, many of
these pages have 0 websites linking to them,
[3:03] and yet they get thousands of visitors per
month from search.
[3:07] So did we just get a proof that you can get
search traffic without backlinks?
[3:11] Well... Yes and no.
[3:14] There are three things in place which allow
these pages to get a ton of search traffic
[3:18] without any backlinks pointing at them.
[3:20] First of all, there's simply a lack of competition.
[3:23] The amount of content that can be found in
Google on the topic of Fallout bobblehead
[3:27] figures is super small.
[3:28] If I put "fallout 4 intelligence bobblehead"
into Google, it will return 1,500 results only.
[3:35] That is nothing!
[3:36] It means that only a few pages on the entire
internet mention this thing.
[3:41] Try other topic, like "keyword research" for
example, and you'll get 450,000 results.
[3:47] Secondly, the top ranking pages don't
have any backlinks pointing at them.
[3:51] Let's put "fallout 4 intelligence bobblehead"
into Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer and see how
[3:55] many backlinks the top 10 ranking results have.
[3:58] The "SERP overview" report shows me that 8
of the top 10 ranking pages have 0 backlinks.
[4:03] Which means that a quality relevant page has
a good chance at ranking for this keyword
[4:08] even without any backlinks pointing at it.
[4:10] And finally, third point.
[4:12] All top 10 ranking results have high Domain Rating.
[4:16] See that DR column? It stands for Domain Rating
and reflects the strength of the overall backlink
[4:21] profile of each website.
[4:22] So the top ranking pages don't have any backlinks
pointing directly at them.
[4:27] But the websites that they belong to do
have a lot of backlinks.
[4:31] And in this particular case, the weakest DR is 68.
[4:35] Which means that these top ranking
pages all belong to very strong websites.
[4:39] And if the Domain Rating of your own website
is a lot weaker than that, it is very unlikely that
[4:45] you will be able to outrank them.
[4:47] Unless, of course, your page has a few good
backlinks pointing directly at it.
[4:51] Like that outlier that I'm sure you've noticed.
[4:54] The Domain Rating of this website is just 59,
which is much weaker than 68, especially
[4:59] considering that Ahrefs DR scale is logarithmic.
[5:02] But that page has 9 backlinks coming from
4 different websites, which allows it to rank
[5:06] among the sites with a much higher Domain Rating.
[5:09] And besides, that page is not even perfectly-
relevant to our search query.
[5:13] I mean, the search query is asking specifically
about the "intelligence bobblehead" while that
[5:18] particular page talks about "bobblehead locations".
[5:21] So how come a page that is not perfectly relevant
to the search query ranks so well?
[5:26] Well, that's because it has more backlinks
than other pages which sends a signal to
[5:31] Google that this page must be very important.
[5:33] And I think this is a pretty good illustration
of how backlinks help you rank in Google
[5:37] and get search traffic.
[5:39] So let's wrap up the whole thing real quick.
[5:41] For your page to rank in Google without backlinks,
three requirements should be met:
[5:46] First, there should be a lack of pages on that topic in Google.
[5:49] Second, the top 10 ranking pages for that keyword
should have 0 backlinks pointing at them.
[5:54] Third, the Domain Rating of your website should be higher or at least comparable to the Domain Rating
[5:59] of the top ranking websites.
[6:01] Obviously, I'm oversimplifying things quite
a bit, but you get the general idea, right?
[6:05] And in fact, it almost never happens that
a popular search query with good business
[6:09] potential would meet all three of these requirements.
[6:12] So in the absolute majority of cases you will
need backlinks pointing directly at your page,
[6:17] in order for it to rank high in Google.
[6:20] And in case you decide to target some "unpopular"
topic where the top-ranking pages don't have any
[6:25] backlinks pointing at them, you still
need a decent Domain Rating.
[6:29] This indicates that your website has
accumulated enough of the so-called
[6:32] "link juice" that can be transferred
to other pages via internal links.
[6:36] And the natural question that comes up at this point is:
[6:39] How do I grow the Domain Rating or Domain
Authority of my website, so that the pages
[6:44] that don't have backlinks would still rank
well in Google and generate search traffic?
[6:48] Well, all you need to do is create content
that will attract a lot of backlinks so that
[6:53] you could then funnel the "link juice" from
these pages to the pages that you struggle
[6:57] to get links to via internal links.
[7:00] In SEO we call this kind of content "linkable content,"
or "linkbait," or "link-worthy pages," or "linkable assets."
[7:06] All these terms mean more or less the same.
[7:09] And the next section of this lesson is just about that.
