[0:00] Guest posting can take a lot of time.
[0:01] You need to find sites to pitch, get your
pitch accepted, and then actually write a
[0:05] good post.
[0:06] So that comes with two big limitations.
[0:08] The first is finding enough unique topics
to write about.
[0:11] And the second is time.
[0:12] But I'm going to help you break through these
limitations.
[0:15] In this video, I'm going to show you how to
systematize your guest blogging process so
[0:19] you can find an unlimited number of prospects
and topics with very little effort.
[0:24] Stay tuned.
[0:24] [music]
[0:28] What's up SEOs?
[0:29] Sam Oh here with Ahrefs, the SEO tool that
helps you grow your search traffic, research
[0:33] your competitors and dominate your niche.
[0:36] Now, while each of the tactics that I'm about
to share with you are easy alone, this is
[0:40] more of an advanced tutorial because scaling
any link building process, it takes time, and
[0:44] some trial and error.
[0:45] So what is guest posting or guest blogging?
[0:48] It's when you publish content on another website
with the goal to increase exposure, traffic,
[0:53] or brand awareness for your own site.
[0:55] And this tactic only has 3 steps.
[0:57] #1. You need to find websites to pitch your guest
post ideas to.
[1:01] #2. Find topics to write about.
[1:03] #3. Write content and get it approved/published
on their blog, ideally with a link back to
[1:08] your site.
[1:09] So let's move on to step one and find guest
posting sites to pitch.
[1:12] There are two really easy ways to do this.
[1:14] The first one is to search for something like:
intitle:your topic, so I'll use fitness as
[1:19] our example.
[1:20] And then I'll add "guest post by" as a phrase
match.
[1:23] Next, we want to make sure that pitching these
sites will be worth your time.
[1:26] And this is super important because you don't
want to spend your time writing for websites
[1:29] that get no traffic and have no links, because it's probably not going to do much for your brand or website.
[1:35] And there are two metrics you can look at
to get a bird's eye view of the websites.
[1:38] The first is Domain Rating, which is an Ahrefs
metric that represents the overall strength
[1:43] of a website's backlink profile.
[1:45] And the second is the amount of search traffic
they get at the domain level.
[1:48] And you can find these metrics with Ahrefs
SEO toolbar.
[1:51] After you've installed it, just click on the
icon, and you'll see that there's an inline
[1:55] view of the SEO metrics for each page.
[1:57] And the domain level metrics are the ones
on the right side.
[2:00] One of my favorite things to do is to export
the top 100 results, which you can do by clicking
[2:04] the icon up here.
[2:06] Just make sure that you have your settings
to show the top 100 results, which you can
[2:09] do by going to Settings, Search settings,
and drag the "Results per page" up to 100.
[2:15] Then you can open up the spreadsheet and start
creating filters to only show websites that
[2:19] will meet your "thresholds."
[2:20] For example, you can set a filter to only
show pages with a Domain Rating of 40 or higher.
[2:25] And then set the Domain Search Traffic filter
to more than 10,000 search visitors.
[2:30] And right away, you have a list of around
15 or so guest posting sites to pitch.
[2:34] Now, 15 or so results probably won't be too
exciting if you're looking to do this at scale.
[2:39] So the best way to find thousands of guest
posting sites is to use Content Explorer.
[2:44] This is basically our mini search engine that
has a ton of filterable metrics and one cool
[2:48] feature that's pretty game-changing for guest
blogging.
[2:51] So first, I'll type in "fitness" and change
this to a title search.
[2:55] Next, I'll set the "One article per domain"
filter, since we don't need to pitch the same
[2:59] website numerous times.
[3:01] Now, we can set the Domain Rating filter again
to a minimum of 40 and add a max value of 70.
[3:07] And I'll also set the language filter to "English,"
since I won't be able to pitch sites in another language.
[3:12] And we now have a list of nearly 10,000 unique
websites that have written about our topic.
[3:18] Now, two important notes:
[3:19] #1. You don't need to limit your prospects to
just websites that have a "Write for us" page.
[3:24] Most websites don't have one and if you're
actually providing solid content for them,
[3:28] then there are very few reasons as to why
they would reject it.
[3:32] And #2. You will have to filter through these results.
[3:35] But it's literally just a matter of eyeballing
the domain names using the "does the domain
[3:39] name look like it makes sense" rule.
[3:41] One last tip is that you should prioritize
the sites you pitch based on a.)
[3:45] relevancy, which is pretty straightforward,
and b.) if the website has ever linked to you before.
[3:50] And this is the game-changing feature I was
talking about.
[3:52] Within Content Explorer, we have this filter
called "Highlight unlinked domains."
[3:56] Here's how it works.
[3:57] Just click here and enter in your domain.
[3:59] And right away, it's going to highlight all
of the domains that have never linked to your
[4:03] website before.
[4:04] And the reason why this is important is because
in general, links from the same websites will
[4:08] have less weight than a link from a new referring
domain.
[4:11] So you want to be pitching new websites that
have never linked to you before. Great!
[4:15] So now all we need to do is click the Export
button and just make sure that the "Only highlighted
[4:20] unlinked domains" checkbox is checked, which
will further narrow down your list of guest
[4:24] posting prospects.
[4:25] From here, just open up your spreadsheet and
clean up your list a bit for websites that
[4:29] you want to pitch.
[4:30] Ok, we now have a ton of sites to pitch our
guest posts to and could easily scale this
[4:34] by entering in different search terms in Content
Explorer.
[4:37] The next step is to find suitable guest post
topics to write about.
[4:40] Now, I know that people do outreach for guest
blogging differently.
[4:43] Some people prefer to include 3-5 headlines, while others prefer to send a general
[4:47] feeler email to see if the website is even
accepting guest posts.
[4:51] Rather than leaning to one side or the other,
I'm going to show you 3 dead simple strategies
[4:55] to generate an infinite number of headlines
to pitch.
[4:58] The first way is called "The Robin Hood Technique."
[5:00] If you don't know this green hooded fellow,
he's best known for taking from the rich and
[5:04] giving to the poor.
[5:05] And in the same way, you can do that by finding
topic ideas from popular sites, aka the rich,
[5:11] and giving your own unique content pitches
to the lesser known sites, aka the poor.
[5:15] So let's go back to Content Explorer, and I'll
search for a popular website like nerdfitness.com.
[5:20] Next, you can sort the results of this website
by whatever you think is a good fit.
[5:24] For example, you can sort their pages by Referring
Domains or by their most shared content using
[5:29] the "Total shares" filter.
[5:31] And you can see some good topic ideas here
like on intermittent fasting, body weight
[5:35] workouts, and paleo dieting.
[5:37] So choose whichever topics you want to write
about, and pitch it to the other fitness sites.
[5:41] And this example nicely transitions us into
the second technique, which is called "The
[5:45] Splintering Technique."
[5:47] With the Ahrefs blog and YouTube channel,
we love creating in-depth content.
[5:51] For example, if you look at our link building
guide, you'll see that this is a 7,500-word
[5:55] post with 6 chapters.
[5:57] This is what we will call our "hero" content.
[5:59] And from here, we can "splinter" this article
into 6 or more shorter pieces that we could
[6:04] easily pitch to other blogs.
[6:06] Let me put this into perspective.
[6:07] Chapter 1 could be a post called "X Link
Building Tactics That Move the Needle."
[6:11] Chapter 2 could be "Essential Link Building
Skills Every SEO Needs to Master."
[6:16] And look at chapter 4.
[6:17] This could be split up into numerous posts.
[6:20] The Art and Science of Creating Link Bait
[6:22] The Definitive Guide to Broken Link Building
[6:25] Guest Posting at Scale.
[6:27] You get the idea, right?
[6:28] And hey, even if you don't have a ton of massive
guides, you can use big guides from other
[6:33] sites to gain inspiration.
[6:35] Looking back at the Nerd Fitness example,
you'll see that their beginner's guide to
[6:38] intermittent fasting is 7,600+ words.
[6:41] Just scroll through the blog post, and try
and extract ideas based on the subheadings.
[6:45] Now, you shouldn't be copying these articles.
[6:47] That's plagiarism.
[6:48] These techniques are strictly meant to get
quick ideas you can pitch to other websites.
[6:52] Alright, the final technique you can use to
scale your guest posting is called "The Perspective
[6:56] Technique."
[6:57] And this technique is centered around finding
opportunities in lateral niches.
[7:01] For example, if you're a freelance writer
and you want to write an article called
[7:05] "X Content Marketing Tips in 2019," then you'd probably want to pitch sites focused on content marketing.
[7:11] But you could slightly change the perspective
of the title to something like "X Content
[7:14] Marketing Tips for Small Business, for Lawyers,
for Startups, or whatever it might be.
[7:19] And you can just go to Google and type in
a query like "content marketing tips for"
[7:24] and you'll see a drop-down of suggestions.
[7:26] But these results are very limited in terms
of the quantity, so if you find this strategy
[7:30] works well for you, then you can enter a seed
keyword into Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer tool.
[7:34] Next, I'll go to the Phrase Match report.
[7:37] And then I'll use the "Include" filter to
search for phrases with the word "for."
[7:41] And just like that, you now have a ton of
lateral niches you can reach with your content.
[7:45] Great, so we now have virtually an endless
number of sites and more than enough
[7:49] topics that we can use to pitch these websites.
[7:52] So the final thing to do is the most time-consuming
and that's to actually write your content.
[7:56] While this may be a time sucker, it's actually
the easiest.
[7:59] And it really comes down to this question:
[8:01] "How big is your wallet?"
[8:02] I know, I know.
[8:03] No one likes hearing that, but it's true to
a certain extent.
[8:07] The good news is that there is no shortage
of freelance writers.
[8:10] Just look for talent on websites like Upwork,
ProBlogger Jobs, or simply by searching for
[8:14] something like "hire freelance writer" in
a Google search.
[8:17] Just make sure the content writers you hire
are knowledgeable in this subject area and
[8:21] are capable of writing genuinely useful content.
[8:24] If you have a team of internal writers or
have a fat wallet, then it's simple.
[8:27] Just use a modified version of the link building
system that I showed you in another video, which
[8:32] I'll link up here.
[8:33] But if you simply don't have the budget to
hire anyone, then you just can have
[8:36] to muscle through these articles.
[8:37] If this is the case, I highly recommend using the
"splintering" technique because you've already
[8:42] written a great piece of content, and rewriting
a part of it with a bit more detail or perhaps
[8:47] a new angle shouldn't take you very long.
[8:49] And I promise you that as you continue practicing,
you'll be able to smash out quality articles fast.
[8:55] Now, before you go and start pitching sites,
I do want to pass on a few additional tips
[8:59] that'll make your guest posting campaigns
a success.
[9:02] First, you should always pitch more sites
than you can handle.
[9:05] Not every site you contact is going to accept
your guest post or even respond.
[9:10] For example, if your team can handle
10 posts per week, then I would pitch around
[9:13] 100 sites.
[9:15] Just make sure you can deliver in a timely
manner.
[9:17] The second guest blogging tip is to link to
other guest posts that you've already published.
[9:21] And this is one of my favorite things to do,
but I don't see enough people doing it.
[9:25] There are obvious benefits like having your
name and face pop up in more places, but by
[9:29] linking to these other pages, you get the
additional SEO benefits by powering the pages
[9:34] that are already linking to you.
[9:36] And as a result, you'll reap some of those
benefits too.
[9:38] Guest blogging is very powerful, and it's a
strategy that we regularly use at Ahrefs.
[9:43] Use this process to refine your guest posting
SOPs, and you'll save a ton of time and be
[9:47] able to scale as far as your resources will
allow.
[9:50] Now, if you enjoyed this video, make sure
to like, share and subscribe, and if you have
[9:54] any questions, throw them down below and I'd
be happy to help out.
[9:57] So keep grinding away and I'll see you in
the next tutorial.
