[0:00] Is SEO worth it? [0:01] Just answer the questions in this flowchart and you'll know whether search engine [0:05] optimization will be worth your time, money, and effort. [0:09] So, start by asking yourself: Are potential customers searching for what I sell or do? [0:14] If the answer is 'yes,' then follow this path. [0:17] And ding, ding, ding, SEO is worth it. [0:21] Now, if you answered 'no' to that question, then follow this path and ask yourself: [0:26] Are potential customers searching for solutions to problems that your business helps to solve? [0:31] If the answer is 'yes,' go this way and ringa-ding-ding – SEO is worth it. [0:37] Now, if you answered 'no' to both questions, then SEO may not be the best marketing [0:42] channel to focus on. [0:44] But to be sure, let's dig a bit deeper into the first two questions starting with: [0:48] Are potential customers searching for what I sell or do? [0:52] Now, if you own a local business, then statistically speaking, SEO will be worth the effort. [0:58] According to Google, 4 in 5 consumers use search engines to find local information. [1:03] 76% of people who search on their smartphones for something nearby, visit a business within a day. [1:09] And 28% of searches for something nearby actually result in a purchase. [1:14] So if you're a restaurant owner, plumber, lawyer, real estate professional, dentist, [1:19] landscaper or whatever, and you're not showing up in Google local packs and organic search, then [1:26] you're leaving a ton of money on the table. [1:28] Now, if you're not a local service provider like an ecommerce brand or software company, [1:33] people will most likely be searching for your products unless you've created something [1:37] completely new. [1:39] So to get an idea of how many people are actually searching for your products and [1:44] services, you can use a keyword research tool like Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer or Ahrefs' free [1:49] Keyword Generator tool. [1:51] For example, if you have a niche ecommerce store that sells socks for dogs, you can simply [1:56] search for "dog socks." [1:58] And as you can see, there are thousands of monthly searches in the US alone [2:03] related to socks for dogs. [2:05] Now, if your product or service isn't something people are really searching for, then you should [2:10] ask yourself the second question: [2:12] Are potential customers searching for solutions to problems that your business helps to solve? [2:18] Now, many searches in Google are for questions rather than products and services. [2:23] After all, if you have a problem, you'll want to learn how to solve it before [2:27] actually spending your money. [2:29] In fact, 53% of shoppers say they always do research before a purchase to ensure they're [2:34] making the best possible choice. [2:37] Let me give you an example of a product that doesn't get searched for much. [2:40] Our company has a tool called Content Explorer. [2:43] It's a searchable database of of billions of web pages. [2:46] But no one's searching for "searchable database of billions of web pages." [2:51] However, people are searching for problems the tool helps to solve, such as finding content [2:56] ideas for your website or finding websites to get backlinks from. [3:01] Here's another example. [3:02] This product is called a flat bastard file and it helps to file metal. [3:07] Now, not that many people are actually searching for this product but there are [3:11] tons of ways you can use it. [3:13] You can use it to sharpen knives, blades, garden tools, and ice tools to name a few. [3:18] And from a search in Ahrefs' keyword generator, you'll see that nearly 20,000 searches happen [3:23] in Google every month just for the query, "how to sharpen a knife." [3:28] So if your website was able to rank for that keyword, it would be quite simple to actually [3:32] recommend your flat bastard file in your content. [3:35] Now, if you want to find more queries where this product could be recommended, you can [3:39] use Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer and search for something like "sharpen." [3:43] Next, go to the Matching terms report and hit the Questions tab to see queries containing the word [3:48] "sharpen", phrased as a question. [3:51] From here, you can cherry-pick topics where you'd be able to recommend your filing product [3:55] which can lead to more sales. [3:57] Now, if you've found that SEO is worth investing in, you have three options. [4:01] Option #1: you can hire an agency to help. [4:04] And this will probably be the most expensive option as it costs around $134/hour with a retainer [4:11] agreement to hire an agency. [4:13] But, it's full service. [4:15] Option #2: you can build an in-house team or outsource to freelancers or consultants. [4:21] This too can get quite expensive as the average cost for an SEO consultant is around $122/hour and for [4:29] freelancers, you'll spend around $68/hour. [4:33] But you save money compared to option one, and you have full control of what happens [4:37] within your organization. [4:39] And option #3 is the DIY route. [4:42] And this is the cheapest way to do SEO but it takes time and skills. [4:47] Now, if you don't have a budget, DIY is basically your only option. [4:51] And even if you do have a budget, I still recommend learning at least the fundamentals [4:56] of SEO because if you go the agency route, you'll be able to identify quality work from [5:02] pure sales people. [5:03] Or if you go the in-house/consultant route, you'll have the knowledge to know whether candidates [5:08] are qualified to do the work you need done.
