[0:00] This is Shane. He runs a site called
[0:02] Just Flip a Coin, which does just one
[0:04] thing, flips a coin. His site pulls 250
[0:07] to 350,000 visits a month, but revenue 5
[0:11] to 600 bucks a month.
[0:13] >> 500 to $600. I've seen sites like this
[0:16] make 10 to 100 times more. But that was
[0:19] just the start of the problem. The truth
[0:21] is that your site has been just doing
[0:23] one simple thing. There's no moat. I
[0:26] tested it myself and I was able to
[0:28] replicate your site in 18 seconds with
[0:30] chat GPT. I'm a little bit worried about
[0:32] the future success of your site. I
[0:35] wanted to show Shane what went wrong and
[0:37] help him build a strategy to 10x his
[0:39] traffic and revenue. But first, I had to
[0:41] show him the ticking time bomb.
[0:43] Something hiding in plain sight.
[0:45] >> There's something that I want to show
[0:46] you here. So, if we look at the top
[0:48] pages report for Just Flip a Coin, I
[0:50] want you to read that number right
[0:51] there.
[0:52] >> 100%.
[0:54] >> That's one page. If this was like a
[0:56] business where you your livelihood
[0:58] depended on it,
[0:59] >> you could be in serious trouble.
[1:01] >> Yeah.
[1:01] >> And so I want to show you what something
[1:03] healthy looks like. Let's use a site
[1:05] like Canva. We'll hit up their top pages
[1:08] report.
[1:08] >> So they they have actually quite a lot
[1:10] to this top page. 21% but that that's
[1:12] their homepage. It's because 23 million
[1:15] people search for Canva every month.
[1:17] Wow. So if we look at this, so PDF
[1:20] editor, their most traffic, non-branded
[1:22] page with 2.3 million monthly organics.
[1:25] But look at I want you to read that
[1:26] percentage.
[1:27] >> 7% of their traffic. Yeah.
[1:29] >> 0.7%. So if they lose all of that
[1:32] traffic,
[1:32] >> doesn't matter.
[1:33] >> Doesn't matter.
[1:33] >> Yeah.
[1:34] >> Right. Is they're hedged. And so if
[1:36] you're putting all your eggs into one
[1:37] basket, you are not hedged at all. And
[1:39] in the case an algorithm update comes up
[1:42] or a new competitor comes up, then you
[1:44] have that one page that could get wiped
[1:46] out in a matter of months.
[1:48] >> So there's basically two things that
[1:50] need to happen for your traffic to grow.
[1:52] You need to be going after net new
[1:54] traffic. And then the second thing that
[1:56] you have to do is you have to protect
[1:57] your current traffic. Basically, the
[1:59] first thing that I do, and this is just
[2:00] like the lowest hanging fruit because
[2:01] it's super simple, is a keyword gap
[2:03] analysis.
[2:04] >> What are the other flip a coin pages
[2:06] ranking for where you're not? Right? So,
[2:08] we have some of your competitors here,
[2:11] flip simu, random.org. These are
[2:14] basically the two main ones, right? So,
[2:16] what I'm going to do is I'm going to
[2:17] select those two competitors here, and
[2:20] I'm going to open it up in content cap.
[2:24] We're trying to find keywords that
[2:25] either flips simu or this random.org
[2:28] coins page ranks for, but your website
[2:31] doesn't. Okay. Flip two coins. We see
[2:34] this one here, too, is flip 100 coins,
[2:37] right? All right. So, I wonder how many
[2:38] like permutations there are of of
[2:40] something like this.
[2:41] >> That would be more like random.org's
[2:42] thing, I think.
[2:43] >> Yes. And if you look at just flip a
[2:45] coin, you don't have that function. You
[2:47] literally just have
[2:48] >> that's it.
[2:49] >> This thing. Now, if we look at the flip
[2:52] simu one, we can flip like 100, 10
[2:55] coins, whatever it is. But Google knows
[2:58] clearly since they're ranking that page,
[3:00] you can flip it two times, 100 times,
[3:03] whatever that is. Mhm.
[3:04] >> Technically, if you add a feature like
[3:06] that where you can change the number of
[3:08] times you can flip it, then you can rank
[3:10] for more keywords. We found a gap. These
[3:12] pages
[3:13] >> are ranking for these, but yours isn't
[3:14] anywhere in Google's top 100.
[3:16] >> Wow.
[3:16] >> There's 200 searches for this. Just this
[3:19] one
[3:19] >> per month. 150 searches. And this is
[3:22] just in the US.
[3:23] >> Take global and it's a little different.
[3:24] So, you know what? Let's actually open
[3:25] up keywords explorer
[3:27] >> and we're going to type flip coins. And
[3:30] this is just showing us like keyword
[3:32] ideas here. So we can see here, flip
[3:34] three coins is actually even more
[3:36] popular. Flip two coins. Flip three
[3:38] coins. That makes sense because it's
[3:39] like it's a tight like best out of three
[3:41] kind of thing.
[3:42] >> Yeah. Right.
[3:42] >> So we can actually even narrow in more.
[3:45] Yeah. And it's showing us quite a bit
[3:47] here. In total global search volume
[3:49] that's 2,300 new searches per month.
[3:51] >> Okay.
[3:52] >> That you could potentially get through
[3:54] that. So now we have a new product
[3:55] feature idea based on keyword research.
[3:59] Does that make sense?
[3:59] >> Mhm. Makes total sense. Thank you. We
[4:01] should get into the actual keyword
[4:03] expansion so that we're not seeing like
[4:05] this maxed out traffic. I think here
[4:08] >> how do we get that next leg up so that
[4:09] we can go like this.
[4:10] >> How do we do that?
[4:12] >> The first place that I always look is
[4:14] who are your competitors and see how
[4:16] they're getting traffic not just to
[4:17] their coin flip simulator but other
[4:19] pages they might have. So let's start
[4:20] here with the the flip simulator thing.
[4:23] And I actually just want to go to their
[4:24] their top pages report cuz they get
[4:26] 370,000 visits. We're basically looking
[4:28] for other ideas. like is there anything
[4:30] in here that could be interesting to add
[4:32] to your site? So in this case, for
[4:34] example, we have like a dice roller. A
[4:36] coin flip is essentially like making a
[4:38] decision. A dice can do that as well.
[4:41] Even a yes or no test. Like that's
[4:43] basically what it is is people might
[4:44] search for heads or tails, right? That's
[4:47] yes or no. But what if you actually had
[4:49] something that was just a yes or no
[4:50] test? Like is there any search volume
[4:53] around that? Very curious. So we'll look
[4:56] yes or no. Okay.
[4:59] Yes or no wheel? Like this is it. You
[5:03] want to take a wild guess at how much
[5:04] the top ranking page for this? Like how
[5:06] much traffic they get?
[5:07] >> 25,000 a month. I don't know. 288,000.
[5:11] >> Wow.
[5:11] >> Estimation. But yes, we just found
[5:13] another tool that we can create. So we
[5:15] have a dice roller. We have a yes or no
[5:17] wheel. Now two ideas that could
[5:19] potentially double your traffic, right?
[5:21] >> Uh let's look at random.org.
[5:23] And yeah, so they get 934 monthly
[5:26] organics. So, let's see where their
[5:27] traffic's coming from. So, they have
[5:29] like a random number generator. That's
[5:31] their main tool. Let's just look at
[5:33] generator.
[5:34] >> Let's do picker wheel roller chooser.
[5:39] Like, it doesn't really matter what
[5:40] we're doing here. And then we're going
[5:41] to go to the matching terms report. And
[5:44] there's this awesome filter here,
[5:45] include. So, now we can add the word
[5:47] random. And now it's going to show us
[5:49] any keywords that mention any of the our
[5:52] our seed keywords and random. Cool. So,
[5:54] random number generator. Boom. 82,000
[5:57] random name generator. That's another
[5:59] one that you could do as well.
[6:00] >> Word generator. Like there's so many
[6:03] different tools that you can make in
[6:04] here. 32,000 monthly searches for random
[6:07] letter generator. Like can you not just
[6:09] pick a letter?
[6:10] >> Can we go to the top site for that?
[6:14] >> Letter picker.
[6:14] >> 36,000
[6:17] monthly visits. Hey, it's the
[6:18] pickerwheel.com.
[6:19] >> Oh, so look at this. So, what we just
[6:21] found is another site that is creating
[6:24] tools.
[6:25] >> That is potentially what you would want
[6:27] to create.
[6:27] >> So, what are we going to do? We're going
[6:28] to take that back to site explorer.
[6:30] >> We're going to paste that site in here.
[6:32] We're going to go and we see that they
[6:33] get a ton of traffic. So, we're going to
[6:34] go to the top pages report.
[6:35] >> Okay.
[6:36] >> And this this is going to show us the
[6:38] pages that get the most search traffic.
[6:39] So, we have the yes or no wield. 768,000
[6:43] monthly organics just for that one tool.
[6:45] >> Wow. Tons of different opportunities you
[6:47] can find here. The difficulty now is
[6:49] really ranking for them. Uh you are
[6:51] going to have to build links and I can
[6:53] almost guarantee you that for a good
[6:55] number of these I'll just open them. So
[6:57] we have something called DR domain
[6:59] rating which represents like the
[7:01] strength of your website's backlink
[7:02] profile. Generally speaking higher DRS
[7:05] tend to rank better like here yes or no
[7:08] wheel. A DR7 site which is a homepage
[7:11] which has quite a few referring domains.
[7:13] This is a DR2 site is in the top 10. I
[7:17] would 100% try to make a yes or no
[7:19] wheel.
[7:20] >> Like it's it almost seems like silly not
[7:22] to do it right now.
[7:23] >> Yeah, absolutely.
[7:24] >> Now, we need to actually get into like
[7:26] protecting your traffic, right? So, how
[7:27] do we maintain that traffic so that
[7:30] these other websites that are coming
[7:32] creating similar tools? How do we
[7:34] prevent them from actually going ahead?
[7:36] The reason why you're ranking high is
[7:37] you have better links right now. But I
[7:38] don't think you have that many links
[7:41] more.
[7:42] >> Mhm.
[7:42] >> Right.
[7:44] >> Yeah. So if we go here and we look up
[7:46] backlink checker, we have been in
[7:48] position one like almost forever for
[7:52] this query. Ignore back links but look
[7:53] at domain. So how many unique domains?
[7:55] So we call it referring domains. How
[7:57] many unique websites are actually
[7:59] linking to that page? For us, we have
[8:02] almost 8,000. It's not about sheer
[8:04] quantity, but it's about like
[8:06] >> the quality of those. It's going to be
[8:08] tough for these people to catch us.
[8:09] >> Mhm.
[8:10] >> This is only for the query flip a coin.
[8:12] >> Okay. They actually have more than you.
[8:14] Wow. But what we see is that in terms of
[8:17] quality of domains, you have a similar
[8:19] amount. Random.org is not that far
[8:21] behind.
[8:21] >> Mhm.
[8:22] >> So, let's look at your backlink profile.
[8:24] And there ain't no way we're going to be
[8:26] looking through like 700 links. So,
[8:28] let's just get a rough idea of like what
[8:30] are your good links. So, we have this
[8:31] feature called best links. We have 15.
[8:34] What we want to look at here is context.
[8:36] Why are they linking to you? We see here
[8:39] 25 fun Zoom games teachers can play with
[8:41] students of all ages. And the context is
[8:44] present your screen to the just flip a
[8:46] coin web page. So what are they talking
[8:48] about here?
[8:49] >> Okay, so they're saying one of those
[8:50] games is heads or tails, right? So
[8:52] they're saying use just flip a coin
[8:55] >> to to flip heads or tails. That's the
[8:57] first thing that you need to do. Okay,
[8:58] so that's in the context of
[8:59] >> Thanks board teachers.
[9:00] >> Yeah, that's the context of of games,
[9:02] right?
[9:02] >> Mhm. We see this one here and it says a
[9:05] coin flip will determine which team
[9:07] starts the game. The content is about a
[9:10] cross word challenge and it's telling
[9:12] people how to play.
[9:13] >> Mhm.
[9:14] >> So now we have rules. Okay. They're
[9:16] actually kind of similar if you think
[9:17] about it, right? They're in the context
[9:19] of games outlining a list of rules and
[9:21] they're saying flip a coin to do it.
[9:23] Just go to this website. So now what we
[9:25] want to do is we want to find out how
[9:27] can we get more links like this, right?
[9:30] Who's going to link to us? It's probably
[9:32] people who are talking about board games
[9:34] rules to start like what are some games
[9:36] where you would need to actually flip a
[9:38] coin to get started. So if we go to
[9:42] content explorer we can search this
[9:44] database of 17 billion pages and we can
[9:47] get like SEO metrics on on all these
[9:48] pages. Basically what we want to look
[9:50] for are footprints. So these phrases
[9:53] that people would mention where it makes
[9:54] sense for them to link to you.
[9:56] >> Mhm.
[9:56] >> Flip a coin. Like it's totally natural.
[9:59] And now we have 230,000 pages. If you
[10:02] can't make up your mind between two
[10:04] options, flip a coin, right? New York
[10:05] Times. These are the kinds of pages that
[10:08] we want to find where people are saying
[10:09] this and you solve a problem there. Flip
[10:12] a coin day. What?
[10:13] >> That'd be a good one to be on.
[10:15] >> I would be asking them for a link. So,
[10:17] I'll give you a decent pitch. I would
[10:18] just tell them that I'll rebrand the
[10:20] entire site to yours for that day.
[10:23] >> Ooh.
[10:23] >> Right. There's a clear value prop now.
[10:26] >> Why wouldn't they promote it? and no
[10:28] one's going to come back and edit out
[10:29] your link and there's no reason for them
[10:31] to like you're actually just helping
[10:32] them by providing a service for them.
[10:34] >> So, let's assume that we found another
[10:35] website that's talking about a game and
[10:37] it's saying, uh, if you can't decide who
[10:39] goes first, then just flip a coin.
[10:41] >> Mhm.
[10:42] >> At that point, now it's all about
[10:43] outreach. And so, you're emailing these
[10:45] people and you're saying, hey, like I
[10:47] saw your rules on whatever game on the
[10:49] crosswords, uh, and you said to flip a
[10:51] coin, nobody has a coin, so I made this
[10:53] free app. Thought that your readers
[10:55] might find it helpful or something like
[10:56] that. You're not trying to sell anything
[10:58] and at this point you're now building
[11:00] good quality links that you can vet
[11:02] yourself. If you have links from New
[11:04] York Times, I don't know, CNN,
[11:06] Hasbro.com, like how are your
[11:08] competitors going to replicate that?
[11:10] >> Yeah, makes sense.
[11:11] >> So, we know how to protect your traffic.
[11:13] We know how and where to get new keyword
[11:15] ideas. And I think at this point, like
[11:17] you got to kind of decide like what do I
[11:20] really want with just flip a coin,
[11:23] right? As novel and trivial as as the
[11:25] tool seems, I would personally want to
[11:29] think of how can I make this product
[11:31] better. It's a product, right? As simple
[11:33] as it is. Do you have any ideas of how
[11:34] you can make your product better? Have
[11:35] you thought of anything?
[11:36] >> One of my strategies has been to just
[11:38] keep it very simple, so I don't want to
[11:40] necessarily junk that up.
[11:42] >> What if I could upload my face on the on
[11:44] the head and my butt on the tail?
[11:46] >> Yeah, right.
[11:47] >> Why not? Right. It's like McDonald's or
[11:48] Taco Bell. You could even just type it
[11:50] in. McDonald's Taco Bell.
[11:57] who audience
[12:01] are actually coming to us playing board
[12:03] games. Like 80% are playing board games.
[12:05] >> Why don't we create more content around
[12:07] board games or tools for board games?
[12:09] Now you're actually building an audience
[12:12] of people who will say go to just flip a
[12:14] coin for this. Like if you're playing
[12:16] Dungeons and Dragons, you have to go
[12:17] just flip a coin and you can have all
[12:19] those decisions made for you. Yeah,
[12:20] >> I think I would want to keep it simple,
[12:22] but just try to make it better than the
[12:24] competitors. Make it easier to use, make
[12:26] it more fun to use.
[12:27] >> Yeah. And I think another way that can
[12:30] potentially lead to links, too, is to
[12:32] add a tracker. How many times have we
[12:34] flipped the coin? How many were heads?
[12:35] How many were tails? Studies that
[12:37] actually end up using something to say,
[12:39] is it is a coin flip really 50/50? We'll
[12:42] start referencing you, saying that we
[12:43] did our coin flips through just
[12:44] flipcoin.com, and that's a link for you.
[12:46] >> Sure. Okay. You got to realize that
[12:48] because there isn't much competition,
[12:49] you don't need that many. You just need
[12:51] slow and steady that are going to drip
[12:53] in.
[12:53] >> After diving into content and link
[12:55] opportunities, I was excited to shift to
[12:57] monetization. Specifically, one idea
[12:59] that could 10x his revenue.
[13:01] >> So, right now, you monetize through
[13:03] display ads and you're using ISOIC here
[13:05] to Mediavine.
[13:06] >> Yes, they've actually reached out to me
[13:07] several times.
[13:08] >> Mediavine usually has better RPMs. So
[13:11] the first thing I would do is I would
[13:12] look at your ISOIC ad revenues, mark
[13:14] down in a spreadsheet like traffic
[13:16] revenue, whatever, take an average out
[13:18] over several months and then do
[13:20] Mediavine for that same duration. I have
[13:22] seen websites that have gone from like
[13:24] Google ads and they have tripled their
[13:26] revenue. Does that mean it'll work for
[13:27] you? I have no clue, but I would
[13:29] definitely sign up with them. The second
[13:31] thing are potential affiliate offers.
[13:34] The affiliate offers I think make sense
[13:36] after you understand the audience a bit.
[13:38] For all you know, there could be people
[13:40] coming to your site saying, "Let's flip
[13:42] a coin for five bucks, for 50 bucks, for
[13:45] 500 bucks, $5,000." Right? In the case
[13:48] that you find out that, let's say, for
[13:49] example, 25% are are betting money, I
[13:53] would be looking at gambling affiliates.
[13:54] And even just having some kind of
[13:56] banners or whatever, if if you do find
[13:58] out that it is like predominantly a
[14:00] gambling, like online gambling audience,
[14:02] I would probably create blog content for
[14:05] that specific audience. If we're talking
[14:07] about like poker odds, like how do you
[14:08] calculate the odds of of specific hands?
[14:10] I will be creating that because now
[14:12] you're attracting an audience. It's a
[14:14] little bit of a moonshot, but if it does
[14:16] hit, there is a lot of money in there.
[14:19] Now, what I think your biggest
[14:21] opportunity and fastest opportunity is
[14:24] is to sell sponsored coin flips. So, the
[14:26] more you understand your audience, the
[14:28] easier it is to sell to advertisers.
[14:30] Like if I am some poker website and I
[14:33] say that I have 400,000 people that come
[14:36] to my website to flip a coin and 38% of
[14:38] those people are people who play online
[14:40] poker.
[14:40] >> Mhm.
[14:41] >> Would a poker site pay $5,000 $10,000 a
[14:45] month to have their logo on one side of
[14:47] the coin?
[14:48] >> Yeah.
[14:48] >> I think that you could sell that for
[14:50] $5,000 per side. And if you find that
[14:52] you have crazy demand, I would just keep
[14:55] increasing the price.
[14:56] >> Mhm. Makes sense to me. There's actually
[14:59] one thing I left out of this story.
[15:01] Before I gave Shane any advice, I made
[15:03] him a cash offer to buy a site. It's
[15:06] cash, buddy. He turned it down. Now, at
[15:09] the time, I was glad. I figured he'd
[15:11] take the strategy and run with it. I was
[15:13] genuinely rooting for him. But now, a
[15:15] few months have passed and nothing's
[15:17] changed. And I can't help but wonder,
[15:20] would the tips and strategy I
[15:21] recommended have worked for him. So,
[15:23] here's what I'm going to do. I'm
[15:24] building my own free tool site from
[15:26] scratch using the exact advice I gave
[15:28] Shane. Same approach, same monetization,
[15:31] same SEO playbook. And if you want to
[15:33] see how far it goes, drop a comment,
[15:36] subscribe, and maybe I'll document the
[15:38] whole
