backlinks
[0:04] I hope you've noticed that I'm using the
quotation marks around the word "secret."
[0:08] That's because it's not really a secret that
someone would be purposefully hiding from you.
[0:12] It is rather an "unsexy" topic that marketing
experts are unable to pitch to their audience.
[0:18] And you're about to learn why.
[0:19] Let's look at another poll that I did at our
Facebook group.
[0:23] I asked what percentage of backlinks our customers
were proactively building, as opposed to acquiring
[0:29] them naturally.
[0:30] And over ~30% of responders said that the
majority of their backlinks come naturally.
[0:35] But let's define the term "natural backlink."
[0:38] The definitions may vary from person to person,
but in my opinion, a backlink can be called "natural"
[0:44] if you didn't make any effort to connect
with the linking website or any person
[0:48] associated with it.
[0:50] Let's say you sent someone a personal outreach
email with a heads up about your article.
[0:54] You didn't ask for a link directly, but they
have linked to your article anyways.
[0:59] According to my definition - that's not a natural backlink.
[1:02] You made a targeted effort towards acquiring
a link from that specific website, so that link
[1:08] is considered manually built.
[1:10] But let's say you tweeted your newly published
article, and one of your Twitter followers
[1:14] linked to it from their website.
[1:16] In that case, it is a perfectly natural link.
[1:19] This time you didn't direct your efforts towards
that specific person and their specific website.
[1:25] This was a broadcast message to your entire
Twitter following.
[1:28] And we have arrived to that link acquisition
"secret" that I wanted to share with you.
[1:33] You can aquire tons of natural backlinks by
broadcasting your content to a big audience
[1:39] of your fans.
[1:40] Here at Ahrefs we only build around 20%
of our backlinks manually.
[1:44] While 80% of the come naturally as a result of
broadcasting our content to a large audience
[1:49] of people.
[1:50] We have an email list of nearly 50,000 blog subscribers.
[1:53] We have built-in notifications in our software
which is used by tens of thousands of people daily.
[1:59] And we have a decent following on
Twitter and Facebook.
[2:02] These three channels alone allow us to reach
a rather substantial number of people without
[2:07] spending a single dollar.
[2:09] And then there's also paid reach.
[2:11] For every article that we publish we have a decent
advertising budget, that we can use to reach
[2:16] relevant people on different platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Quora, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.
[2:21] The more money we pour into our ads, the more
people we're going to reach.
[2:26] So with every article that we publish at Ahrefs
Blog we can easily reach a relatively large
[2:31] amount of people.
[2:32] And if your article is link-worthy, some
of these people will naturally link to it.
[2:37] That is how almost every article that we publish
ends up in Google top 10 without any manual
[2:42] link building done by our marketing team.
[2:44] That is the "unsexy" secret to acquiring backlinks.
[2:48] Big audience of fans plus a solid advertising budget.
[2:52] I'm sure now you see why I called it "unsexy."
[2:55] Because most people don't have a big audience
of fans or any budget for content promotion.
[3:00] Well, I've been there too back when I was
running my personal blog and bootstrapping
[3:04] my own projects.
[3:06] And back in those days my link building was
exactly the opposite of what it is today at Ahrefs.
[3:11] I was building 80% of all my backlinks manually,
and only about 20% of them came naturally.
[3:18] That was tedious as hell.
[3:20] So if you're only starting out with your
blog, I have some bad news for you.
[3:24] Up until you grow a large audience to broadcast
your newly published content to, or allocate
[3:29] some money to pour into ads, you'll have
to build most of your backlinks manually.
[3:34] The takeaway: start building your audience
as soon as possible.
[3:38] The sooner you build a large audience of people
who you can easily reach with your newly published
[3:42] content - the sooner you can let go of all
of those tedious link building tactics.
