[0:00] Part 3. How to squeeze maximum search traffic out of your article. [0:04] What we've just covered is how to optimize your article for a single keyword. [0:08] But as you already know, it is rare that a page would rank in Google for a single keyword only. [0:13] I mean, you cannot rank #1 for "how to tie a tie" and not rank anywhere in top 10 [0:18] for something like "how to tie a tie tutorial." [0:22] Take any search query and there would be hundreds, sometimes thousands, of other ways to put it. [0:27] And Google tends to rank pretty much the same pages for all these relevant search queries. [0:32] And here's the best part. [0:33] Your page might be ranking poorly for that main keyword. [0:37] But still get decent search traffic from all these variations. [0:40] Let's examine the search results for the query "website traffic," using our Keywords Explorer tool. [0:45] As you can see, our article at Ahrefs Blog only ranks #5. [0:49] But it still gets almost 6,000 visits from search according to Ahrefs. [0:53] All because it ranks for over 600 other relevant keywords. [0:57] And that's in the US alone. [0:59] Let's look at the global search traffic data via Site Explorer tool. [1:02] So the total traffic to this page is almost 9,000 visits per month, where 63% coming [1:08] from the United States and 10% from the United Kingdom. [1:12] Pretty decent result, for an article that doesn't rank in top 3 for it's main keyword, right? [1:17] So let's look at the keywords that are bringing it traffic from Google: "website traffic," "check [1:21] website traffic," "website stats," 'website traffic estimator," "website popularity." "how to see [1:26] how much traffic a website gets." [1:28] That's a pretty wide rage of search queries that it ranks for. [1:31] I mean, things like "website popularity" and "website traffic estimator" are not so closely related. [1:37] But Google decided that our article is worth ranking for both of them. [1:41] Oh, and should I say that our article doesn't mention any of these two search queries? [1:45] That's because we are practicing what we preach and focus on creating great in-depth authority content, [1:51] rather than filling it with hundreds of keywords. [1:54] But who doesn't want more traffic, right? [1:56] So here's how we are going to optimize this article for maximum search traffic: [2:00] #1. We need to study the keywords that we already rank for and make sure that we mention them [2:05] in our article. [2:07] Like I just showed you, our article ranks for search queries like "website populariy" [2:11] and "website traffic estimator" that are not even present anywhere in our article. [2:15] But don't get me wrong, we're not going to stuff our article with every keyword variation [2:20] that we want to rank for. [2:22] We're going to think of a natural way to rewrite our article, mentioning these things. [2:27] We mostly looking for keywords that could be turned into a few additional paragraphs [2:30] in our article. [2:31] And "website popularity" seems like a great topic that we could expand on. [2:35] Second, we need to study the keywords that competing pages rank for, but our page doesn't. [2:41] To do that, I'm going to use our amazing Content Gap tool that can be found within Site Explorer. [2:46] So I'll start with the keywords that two pages above us rank for, but our page doesn't. [2:51] And here are a few search queries that seem promising: "website traffic report," "track website [2:55] traffic," "measure website traffic." [2:57] These things easily deserve a few paragraphs in our article that will add value to anyone [3:02] reading it. [3:03] And, finally, #3. [3:04] We need to study other popular searches, relevant to our main search query. [3:09] For that purpose we have quite a few reports in Keywords Explorer, under the Keyword ideas section. [3:14] And you can also use Google Keyword Planner tool, which will suggest quite a few interesting [3:18] keywords to consider. [3:19] All in all, the goal here is to study the things that people are searching for, related to your [3:24] main topic and try to expand your article based on that knowledge. [3:28] In fact, this is how you should be writing your articles in the first place. [3:31] Study what people are searching for and create an outline for your article, based on these searches. [3:36] This will help your future article to rank for all these searches and get maximum [3:40] search traffic from Google. [3:42] This is probably the best advice that I can give you, in terms of optimizing your article for Google. [3:47] Knowing what people search for around a specific topic will help you create an amazingly useful [3:52] article for these people. [3:53] And here's where you should start applying everything that you've just learned from this lesson.
