[0:00] This blog post ranks at the bottom
of page 1 where no one clicks.
[0:03] And I'm going to try and move it
from here to here… in just one day.
[0:08] And to prove that you don't need advanced
SEO skills or tactics, I'm going to limit myself
[0:13] to just the SEO basics.
[0:14] So here's the plan.
[0:16] Step 1. Find the root cause of why we're in position 7.
[0:20] Step 2. Plan the best way to rank
ahead of our competitors… fast.
[0:24] Step 3: Implement the action items.
[0:27] Step 4. Ping Google for an assist.
[0:30] And Step 5. Rank #1 for "blogging tips".
[0:33] We've only got one shot at this, so let's
get started with step 1 and figure out
[0:38] why we're not ranking at the top.
[0:40] So, when a page isn't ranking high, it's usually
because there's an issue with the content itself
[0:44] or the page just doesn't have enough quality
backlinks compared to the other top result.
[0:49] If it's a content issue, we're a-ok.
[0:52] Google just thinks the other pages are a better
match for people searching "blogging tips".
[0:57] But if we have a backlinks issue, it's game
over, because we're racing against time.
[1:03] So after about five minutes researching
in our SEO tool, it was obvious why we
[1:08] weren't ranking at the top of Google.
[1:11] Yes! It's not a links issue.
[1:14] Check this out!
[1:15] See here, the top 2 pages have well under 100
websites linking to them, and us down here,
[1:22] we have over 200!
[1:24] And these are just raw numbers.
[1:25] But if you look at the pages that are actually
linking to us, they're from other blog posts on
[1:31] perfectly legit sites.
[1:33] So yeah, from a quick glance,
it's definitely a content issue.
[1:36] And I know exactly which SEO
technique we'll need to rank #1.
[1:40] But first, we need to figure out what Google
wants to see and who we're up against.
[1:44] And this will help us form
the perfect plan to follow.
[1:47] So let's Google for "blogging tips".
[1:49] Ooooo… and this is good.
[1:51] This quick answer box is
called a featured snippet.
[1:53] And technically anyone in
the top 10 can rank for it fast.
[1:57] And because we're in position 7, there's
potential to steal it without actually
[2:03] moving up in the regular blue link results.
[2:05] Now, to get the featured snippet, you basically
just need to look at where Google is pulling
[2:09] the information from on the top page.
[2:12] And then you'll note the format they use, and either
match it or somehow find a way to "one up" it.
[2:18] But this is where things get kind
of cloudy because, to be frank,
[2:22] featured snippet optimization is a lot
about guessing and maybe some luck.
[2:27] So here's the situation.
[2:29] Google is showing a list based
on this page's table of contents.
[2:32] And each item is a jump link which takes
visitors to the respective blogging tip.
[2:36] And our page is doing the exact same thing, but
one obvious thing that the top page does better
[2:42] is that they clearly communicate
what their tips actually mean.
[2:46] Ours… not so much.
[2:49] Alright, so we have two options here.
[2:51] Option A is that we can use the SEO tactic
that I was originally thinking of.
[2:56] And basically, all we'd need to do is to rewrite
our content to make it better for searchers
[3:01] and we could also optimize
for that featured snippet.
[3:04] But I am very tempted by option B.
[3:08] And that's to just rewrite the names of our
blogging tips in the headings and table of
[3:12] contents, so it's easier for people
and search engines to understand.
[3:17] And maybe, just maybe, we could jump to #1.
[3:21] The clear choice here was option A.
[3:23] But doing more research, rewriting our content,
uploading it and having Google actually cooperate
[3:29] with us in step 4 was a big bet
to make with no guarantees.
[3:34] So option B was definitely interesting
– speed ranking in under an hour.
[3:39] But the idea was based around
nothing more than a guess.
[3:42] Was I going to take a Hail Mary in
the first hour of this challenge?
[3:47] I have to find out if option B will work.
[3:49] So off to work I went to implement
my action plan…
[3:52] But then something unexpected happened
that had the potential to sabotage my chances
[3:57] at hitting #1.
[3:59] Uhhh… so, an hour has already passed
and I've basically done nothing.
[4:04] So, if this idea flops, I'm not sure
if I'll have time for a plan B.
[4:10] I had severely underestimated
the amount of work involved.
[4:14] And then it hit me - I was doing this all wrong.
[4:17] So I realized that I could have done
this with ChatGPT in like 15 seconds.
[4:21] And so I used this prompt.
[4:23] "I'll give you our blog content, and I want you to
rephrase the main tips which are heading tags
[4:27] so it's clear, direct, and easy
to understand at a glance."
[4:31] Then I pasted in our post and boom… tips 1 - 24 donezo!
[4:38] And these are way clearer
than what we have in our post.
[4:41] So all there was left to do was log
into WordPress, make the changes,
[4:45] and hit the Update button.
[4:47] We were just under two hours in and I
was ready to ping Google for an assist.
[4:52] So, when you update your content, the fastest
way to get Google to check out your new content
[4:57] is to send a request for indexing
in Google Search Console.
[5:00] Thing is - it's nothing more than a request.
[5:03] There's zero guarantee that anything
will happen instantly or even at all.
[5:09] So I've just submitted the URL for indexing,
and we still have like 22 hours left, so I think
[5:16] that we'll be good.
[5:17] I'm going to check the results after lunch.
[5:20] But as I was eating a frigging delicious small-town
burrito, I couldn't think of anything else but hitting
[5:26] the top spot.
[5:27] So I pulled out my phone, Googled for blogging
tips, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing…
[5:34] Hold on, let me record this.
[5:36] We're ranking #1 right under
the People Also Ask box.
[5:39] And literally three hours ago,
we were in position 7.
[5:42] This is crazy!
[5:44] I was on top of the world.
[5:46] I gave our waiter a 100% tip, gave him a high-five,
and went straight back to the office only to find out…
[5:54] Our desktop rankings haven't budged,
and it makes me think that our mobile
[5:59] rankings aren't going to stick either.
[6:01] I wanted… no, needed that featured
snippet – but it was so far out of reach.
[6:07] And to make things worse, as I was enjoying my
very expensive burrito, I got a call from the Mrs
[6:14] only to find out that I had to leave in five hours.
[6:19] So now with only five real working hours
left, I had no choice but to change plans.
[6:25] Alright, so somehow, we have to do a full
content refresh in record time and there's
[6:31] just so much work to be done.
[6:32] So here's my plan.
[6:34] Step 1. Figure out exactly what Google
and searchers want to see when searching
[6:38] for "blogging tips."
[6:39] Step 2. Speed-write the best article for
searchers based on the research from step 1.
[6:45] Step 3. Ask Google for another assist.
[6:48] Step 4. Find out if our post deserves to rank #1.
[6:53] We haven't got a second to waste, so
we've got to go back to where we began:
[6:56] a search for "blogging tips."
[6:58] So when I'm trying to figure out what
Google and searchers want to see,
[7:02] I'm looking at three main things.
[7:04] First, I'm going to look at the titles
of the top-ranking pages.
[7:07] So what kind of pages have they created?
[7:09] Is there a specific format they follow?
[7:11] Is there a specific audience they're targeting?
[7:14] Or is there a specific angle they've all taken?
[7:17] So, from the looks of it, all top pages are blog
posts in a listicle format, and they're all targeting
[7:22] "beginner bloggers", but we already know this.
[7:24] Which is why you gotta look at the second
thing which is called SERP features.
[7:28] And SERP features are everything else
that's not a regular blue link result.
[7:32] So we already know that there's a featured snippet,
and we definitely-definitely want to optimize for this.
[7:38] But check out this question box here,
which is often called "People Also Ask."
[7:42] If the box is true to its name, then that means
that people who search for "blogging tips"
[7:48] are also searching for these queries.
[7:50] And this one, this one right here, is very-very
interesting: "how can I get better at blogging".
[7:57] So, we already know these people are beginner
bloggers, but I think we've uncovered why they
[8:03] search for "blogging tips."
[8:04] They don't have the goal of making more money,
they don't necessarily even care to get more traffic,
[8:10] they just want to get better at blogging.
[8:12] Now, the final thing I'm looking for are commonalities
between my competitors' articles and important
[8:18] things I might have missed.
[8:20] And the best way to do this is to just read
their articles and compare it with yours,
[8:25] which is what I'm going to do right now.
[8:28] This is taking forever.
[8:31] To be honest, I didn't really see anything in our
competitors' content that was particularly better
[8:37] or worse than ours.
[8:38] And I actually have no idea where to start.
[8:44] Even if I start writing now, I don't
know if I'm going to make it in time.
[8:47] A big part of me wanted to give
up to avoid potential failure.
[8:51] I even thought about starting over with another
page and to just do it right the first time through.
[8:57] But then the most meta thing happened,
and there's nothing that would have quite
[9:00] prepared me for it.
[9:02] This video popped out on my home feed:
"The Real Reason You're Not Ranking in Google".
[9:07] The video had an entire section
on fixing content-related issues.
[9:12] And after seven minutes of absorbing pure wisdom,
I knew exactly what I had to do to rank our post #1.
[9:20] So I wasted a bunch of time trying to do
this manually and completely forgot that
[9:24] there's this report in Ahrefs called "Also Talk About"
which is showing us topics that the top 10 pages
[9:30] for blogging tips are talking about.
[9:33] So all I have to do is skim through this report and
compare it with our post to see what we're missing.
[9:38] But doing this manually would have
been yet another time suck and so 2022.
[9:43] So I opened up ChatGPT and gave it this prompt:
[9:46] "I'm going to give you two things.
#1. A blog post on the topic "blogging tips".
[9:51] And #2. a list of keywords that
are related to the topic.
[9:55] I need you to tell me which keywords,
entities, or subtopics I've missed in
[10:00] my content based on the keyword list."
[10:03] And when I hit the return key,
I couldn't believe my eyes!
[10:06] We barely talked about social media.
[10:08] We don't talk about a content strategy at all.
[10:11] We barely touch on email marketing and
don't even mention an editorial calendar
[10:16] which is like blogging 101.
[10:18] And check out this tip: AI!
[10:21] I've literally used ChatGPT twice today to
significantly speed up some of my work.
[10:26] And I don't think any of the top-ranking pages
mention anything about AI or ChatGPT, so it's
[10:31] a unique and fresh angle we can add to our post.
[10:35] And these parts right here remind me that
we've barely talked about any actual writing tips.
[10:40] Now I knew exactly what I had
to add to our content.
[10:44] And I also knew that I had to cut out points
that weren't right for our beginner blogging
[10:48] audience that had the goal of
becoming a better blogger.
[10:51] It was time to speed write the best
article I could in record time.
[10:55] I literally wrote so fast that smoke
was coming out of my keyboard.
[10:59] And a few hours later… we
had our final product.
[11:03] Done! I have my doubts if this will work, but
all we can do now is hit the Publish button.
[11:11] Now, before I run, we have to
ping Google for the assist.
[11:14] So I'll search for the URL in Search
Console, and hit request indexing.
[11:19] And done!
[11:21] All we can do now is hope that Google acts
on our second indexing request and ranks us
[11:27] ahead of our competitors.
[11:28] So, hopefully by tomorrow morning
we'll be in position 1.
[11:32] And with the blink of an eye… it was morning.
[11:34] I already checked first thing and we
still owned position 1 on mobile.
[11:38] But what I really wanted was that
featured snippet on desktop.
[11:42] With only a couple of hours left to the 24-hour
mark, it was the moment of truth...
[11:49] We didn't get it.
[11:50] Wix is still 1 and we are now technically
in position 6, which is better than 7, but
[11:58] obviously not the result we were going for.
[12:04] To be honest, it kind of feels crummy,
but at least we got mobile position #1
[12:10] with our content refresh, and I bet you
on desktop somewhere else it ranks #1…
[12:17] It ranks… somewhere else… that's it!
[12:20] Google's search results are location-dependent.
[12:22] So I opened up my VPN with just one hour
remaining, I had to find a location in the US
[12:28] where we were ranking #1.
[12:30] Boston.. Nope
[12:34] Connecticut... Nope
[12:39] New York…
[12:40] The only thing holding me back were pictures
of bridges that I selected with 100% accuracy…
[12:46] I had done it.
[12:47] Yessss, we've got New York!
[12:49] And after checking 20 some odd locations,
we had confirmed sightings of an Ahrefs
[12:53] featured snippet in New York, Nebraska,
and Raleigh, North Carolina.
[12:58] And exactly five days later our post owned the
featured snippet from the capital of all 50 US states.
[13:06] All it took was a basic SEO
technique and a delicious burrito.
