- - 四十五岁年老时间紧迫,脑子不如年轻人灵光,硬件条件不如我们有手机电脑互联网,去培训师那里请教他人还被嘲笑挖苦;

▁▂▃▅▆ /A

Profits that heady smack more of an oligopoly than of a cut-throat battle forbusiness.

- heady: adj, affecting you in a strong and pleasant way

- smack:  01 n, a hit with your flat hand or with a flat object

02 v, to hit something hard and noisily

03 adv, noisily and with great force

- - - more of an oligopoly than of a cut-throat battle

- - - more of ... than of  ...

        更...而非...

- - -  of + a/an + n

- - - Would that things were simple.

▁▂▃▅▆ §/B

In chasing performance, investors are pursuing a chimera.

- chimera:  01 formal a plan or course of action that is not possible to achieve
02  a frightening imaginary creature in old stories.(It has a lion’s head, a goat’s body, a long tail, and it breathes fire.)

- chase

- pursue

▁▂▃▅▆ ¶/C

When a hot new tool arrives on the scene, it should extend the frontiers of economis and pull previously unanswerable questions within reach.

What might seem faddish could in fact be economists piling in to help shed light on the dicipline's darkest corners

Some economist, however, argue that new methods also bring new dangers; rather than pushing economics forward, crazes can lead it astray, especially in their infancy.

- piling: pile,  put a large number of things on top of each other

- craze: something that suddenly becomes very popular, but for only a short time

- astray: become lost or go to the wrong place

- - - When something arrives on the scene

- - - What might seem faddish could in fact be ...

- - - new methods also brings new dangers

- - - pull previously unanswerable questions within reach

- - - pile in: enter a place in large numbers, especially in a way that is not organized

- - - shed light on: provide new information that helps you understand something

- - - lead it astray: go wrong or do something wrong

▁▂▃▅▆ /D

In August, Olivier Blanchard, a heavyweight macroeconomist, wrote a plea to colleagues to be less “imperialist” about their use of dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models, adding that, for forecasting, their theoretical purity might be "more of a hindrance than a strength".

- macro-: large, or considered in a general way used with some nouns and adjectives

- plea:an urgent or emotional request for something

- imperialist: wanting to take control of other countries

- equilibrium:  a situation in which there is a balance between different forces or aspects

- hindrance: something that delays or prevents progress

- - adding that,

- - more of a .. than ..

- - wax and wane

- - soar and sink

- - condone and condemn

- - in theory, in practice

- - rhetoric and substance

- - friend and foe

- - virtues and vices

- - boom and bust

- - carrot and stick

- - make and maintain

- - bedger and pester

bedger: try to make someone do something by asking them many times

pester: keep annoying someone, especially by asking them for something or asking them to do something

rhetoric: a style of speaking or writing that is intended to impress people but is not honest

substance:  the fact that something is based on accurate information

▁▂▃▅▆ /E

Much has been made, among EM Drive fans, of the fact that Dr White's paper was peer-reviewed.

Much has been made of the fact that in August I plan to extract the classical framwork of sentences from the Economist.

【1】more of an oligopoly than a cut-throat battle for business

【2】In chasing ..., .... are pursuing ...

【3】When something arrives on the scene

What might seem faddish could in fact be ...

pull previously unanswerable questions within reach

【4】more of ... than ...

【5】Much has been made of the fact that ...
