It marked the moment when oil came of age.
【NYTimes】A Generation Grows Up in China Without Google
【Bloomberg】Google Is Courting Trouble in China
“The Chinese apps become useless as soon as you move abroad,” he said. But with Google and others, “whichever country you go to, you can still use these apps,” he added. “The return on investment is very high.”
(What happened to making the world “universally accessible,” the company’s mission statement?)
What’s the point, then? Money, of course, and the potential to reach China’s nearly 800 million internet users — more than twice the population of the U.S. Sundar Pichai, the chief executive of Alphabet’s Google unit, has said he wants Google to reach the whole world, and that includes China.
You can count the minutes until politicians ask Google to explain why it refuses to sell artificial intelligence for a U.S. military program but would help China’s government censor information from its own citizens.
You can count the minutes untile Moo said " do you homework!"
You can count the days until a high mark in the exam as soon as you study hard everyday.
Neither censorship nor the long odds of success have gone away.

Since the price of crude started tumbling in 2014, the world has had a glimpse of the havoc a debilitated oil industry can cause. When oil fell below $30 a barrel in January this year, stock-markets predictably plummeted, oil producers such as Venezuela and Nigeria suffered budget blowouts and social unrest, and some American shale companies were tipped into bankruptcy.
havoc: a situation in which there is a lot of damage or destruction, or in which something cannot continue in its normal way because of problems
debilitated: - - debilitate: make someone physically or mentally weak

Eventually, America ran into trouble too. The tech-stock bubble burst in early 2000, prompting a broader share price slump. Business investment particularly in technology, sank; and as share prices fell, consumers cut back. By early 2001 America, along with most of the rich world, had slipped into recession, albeit a mild one.
Germany's growth rate has tumbled to around 1%. But if the world economy does stumble, storing stability will be harder this time round because policymakers have so little room for maneuver.
▁▂▃▅▆ ▊★/E〓

- - fight with gritted teeth for
- - spare no effort for

【2】 - - encouage unity
- - remain devided
【3】It marked the moment when .. came of age
【4】the world has had a glimpse of
