Some people believe it is important for universities to provide funding for student entertainment, such as movies or concerts on campus. Other believe that university money should only be used for academic purposes. Which view do you agree with? Explain why.

Part 1

(Authentic & Native English Sayings)

What makes a great university

 VS

what makes a successful student

What makes a good/great University

  • A high concentration of talented teachers, researchers and students: 优秀的人才。

- In most cases, world-class universities recruit students and faculty without concern for national borders. This enables them to focus on attracting the most talented people. no matter where they come from, and open themselves to new ideas and apporaches.

- Harvard, for instance, has a student population that is 19% international; Stanford, 21%; Columbia, 23%. At the University of Cambridge, 18% of the students are from outside the European Union. The U.S. universities ranked at the top of these global surveys also hire significant numbers of foreign academics, Caltech, for example, has 37%.

  • Sizable budgets:

 - The availablity of abundant resources sparks a circular chain of events that allows institutions to attract even more top professors and researchers, and thus even more money.

- Elite institutions have several sources of funding:

* government money for operational spending and research,

* contract research from public organizations and private firms,

 * and earnings from endowments, gifts and tution fees.

- American universities top the list both because they have large endowments, which cover immediate costs and allow the schools to focus on mid-term and long-term institutional priorities, and because their faculty are awarded lots of government research funding.

 - Per student, the richest private universities in the U.S. receive more than $40,000 in endowment income every year, compared with a mere $10,000-per-student at top Canadian universities. In Asia, though, the National University of Singapore has been successful managing its endowment, with a current portfolio of $774 million amassed through fundrasing.

  • Combination of freedom, autonomy and leadership:自由、民主、自治

- World-class universities thrive in an environment that fosters competitives ness, unrestrained scientific inquiry, critical thinking, innovation and creativity. Institutions that complete autonomy are also more agile, because they aren't bound by clunky bureaucracies and externally imposed standards. As a result, they can manage their resources efficiently and quickly respond to the demands of a rapidly changing global market.

- Finally, it is important to note that elite universities are not labelled by self-declaration; rather, their status is conferred by the outiside world on the basis of international recognition. The competition to be a world-class university, then, will continue to be a case where many are called but few are chosen.

What makes a successful student:

  • Pusue passion, not A's & Positive thinkingskills.: 成绩并不重要,与其追求高分,好的学业成绩,不如去发现自己的激情、兴趣和爱好。

- College student should be moved by curiosity, interest and fascination, not by making the highest on a test. As an adult, no one ever asks you what your grades were. Grades become irrelevant. Ambition and innovation are things that trump grades every time.

- College is not going to be easy; if it was easy, everyone would be walking around with a college degree. The best things in life are the things you have to work hard for and achieve on your own.

- It is really easy to slip into a pattern of negative thoughts, like the test was too hard, there is too much reading or there is no way to get everything done. You must change from negative thinking to positive, solution-oriented thinking. Instead of thinking you are to fail the test, think about how the test is going to be challenging and think of ways to prepare.

  • Take time to study:不要太在乎学习成绩,不代表不需要学习 - Learn & Study & Digest & Master.
    - Success in college relies on students preparing outside of class, so students should spend time reviewing notes and reading the textbook for each session. When you study, find a quiet space and cut off outside distractions. A good rule of thumb is to spend two hours studying for each hour you spend in class.

  • Avoid procrastinating & Organise your time:避免拖延。

 - No professor ever complained about her students finishing an assignment early. Setting aside time tocompelete one task will give ease your stress level, and make it more likely to compete others on time. On occassion, you may need to stay up all night to finish an assignment. Procrastinating will only make doing so more likely, and doing work early can help you get more regular sleep.

 - Try to avoid guilting yourself into your work. Extrinsic motivation, such as "I ought to do this so my parents don't get mad at me," isn't as strong as intrinsic motivation, such as "I want to do well on that exam so that my good grades will help me get into medical school." Setting positive goals for yourself and reminding yourself that your work will help you achieve them can help crushprocrastination.

 - Unlike in high school, no one will be tracking you and your activities in college, so you will have to do that yourself. Give each event and assignment a priority based on timing, and its importance to achieving your ultimate goals. Your shedule should not just be about academic work, so include time for personla activities and interests.

  • Get involved in a team or club & Attend on-campus events:参加集体活动。

 - You won't always be able to follow your passions in the classroom. Find groups and activities that you enjoy, or maybe involve practical applications for your academic work. These events are also a great way to meet new people and make friends.

- Colleges have access to a nearly unmatched variety of cultural, intellectual and atheletic events that are avaliable to students. Take advantage of these, and take part in the cultural life of the school, some of which you may never have the oppotunity to do again.

Part 2

(The recommended/easiest way to deal with/crack this topic)

 - If students are provided with more and better entertainment facilities, they migh have an easier access to relaxtion, which is definitely gonna be good for their study efficiency.

Relax:

- College students nowdays have a lot of assignments and projects to deal with, and they have so many requirements to fullfil, so a lot them might encounter the problem of getting stressed out. Providing them with more ways to entertain themselves can always help them get a better academic performance.

- For example, as a student, I may have a lot of pressure since I have to work really hard everyday so that I can get the required score in the TOEFL exam for my dream school and further my study someday in the future. And whenever I feel very tired after a long time stressful study, I would go to some conert to help me temporarily escape from the pressure. And usually I can have a better study efficiency before I go back to my study again.

So I think funding for student entertainment definitely outweighs funding for academic purposes.

Part 3 ( sample )

Assertion:

Personally speaking, I think if students are provided with more and better entertainment facilities, they might have an easier access to relaxation, which is definitely gonna be good for their study efficiency.

Reason1:

First of all, college students nowdays have a lot of assignments and projects to deal with, and they have so many requirements to fulfil, so a lot them might encounter the problem of getting stressed out. Providing them with more ways to entertain themselves can always help them get a better academic performance.

Reason2:

For example, as a student, I may have a lot of pressure since I have to work really hard everyday so that I can get the required score in the TOEFL exam for my dream school and further my study abroad someday in the future. And whenever I feel very tired after a long time stressful study, I would go to some concert to help me teporarily escape from the pressure. And usually I can have a better study efficiency before I go back to my study again.

So I think funding for student entertainment definitely outweighs funding for academic purposes although students' academic performance is also very important.

▁▂▃▅▆ /A

But lashing out against international schools could prove risky.

lash: to criticize someone or something angrily

▁▂▃▅▆ §/B

Laoshan is a case in point.

For example

For instance

Take ... as an example

such as

say

speak of

▁▂▃▅▆ ¶/C

A provincial forestry official in south-weatern Yunnan province——the site of many protected areas——privately predicts that infighting will persist and that progress towards a more orderly system will be slow.

▁▂▃▅▆ /D

Since the election the S&P 500 index of shares has jumped 3%, led by stocks like banks and retailers that soar and sink with the economic cycle.

TE 特别喜欢用押韵的单词,头韵比如有 make and matain, friend and foe, wax and wane.

Merry to meet, melt and mint.

▁▂▃▅▆ /E

But there are three main reasons to doubt that a big boom will materialise.

boom:

a similar increase in the activity of a particular industry or part of a country’s economy

materialise:

1.happen or to become

2. appear suddenly and unexpectedly

... could prove risky

... is a case in point

... infighting will persist and progress will be slow

soar and sink

... will materialise
