Eventually, America ran into trouble too. The tech-stock bubble burst in early 2000, prompting a broader share price slump. Business investment particularly in technology, sank; and as share prices fell, consumers cut back. By early 2001 America, along with most of the rich world, had slipped into recession, albeit a mild one.

Germany's growth rate has tumbled to around 1%.

But if the world economy does stumble, storing stability will be harder this time round because policymakers have so little room for maneuver.

Investors also focused on whether OPEC members will agree to cut oil production, and thus lift oil prices (and oil-industry profits), at their forthcoming meeting.

句型:cut A and thus lift B

How to get a high grade? Cut your sleeping time and then lift the studying activity.

Traffic from China has also waned following the victory of the pro-nationalist party in Taiwan's presidential election, which has soured cross-strait relations.

wane: If a feeling or power wanes, it becomes weaker or less important.

wax: to become bigger or stronger  mainly literary

If a relationship or situation sours, or if something sours it, it stops being successful or satisfactory.

Chances are high that money soured the relationships among friends.

The election of Donald Trump is expected to smooth final consent for the project.

consent: permission to do something

agreement, acquiescence, approval, assent, compliance, go-ahead

句型: smooth final consent for

They had better smooth the final consent for the program.

IN 2012 he dismissed climate change as a coax cooked by Chinese.

hoax:恶作剧

trick, deception, fraud, practical joke, prank, spoof (informal), swindle

这个用法很幽默了,cook 本来有做饭的意思,cook up 是虚构、伪造, invent a story, excuse, or plan

句型: cook up a coax

dismiss: to refuse to accept that something might be true or important

His argument was dismissed as a coax cooked by himself.

Plenty of Mr Trump's voters dismiss climate change itself as a phoney fad peddled by "bicoastialetites".

phoney: not real and intended to trick people

peddle: to try to make people believe a story, explanation, or idea, especially when it is wrong

句型:peddle a phoney fad

His reason was peddled as as a phony fad in such an age.

cut A and thus lift B

sour the relationship

smooth final consent

dismiss X as a coax cooked up by

dismiss X as a phoney fad paddled by
