http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/VcAA7Q7g95v4ECpOuDVhjw
The reason why exhaustion and burnout
are so common
链接:
http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20160721-the-reasons-why-exhaustion-and-burnout-are-so-common
1. sap her of all her energy
to make someone weaker or take away strength or an importantquality from someone, especially over a long period of time
eg:
Constant criticism saps you of your confidence.
Taking care of her dying mother had sapped all her energy.
2. mundane tasks
very ordinary and therefore not interesting
eg:
Mundane matters such as paying bills and shopping for food do not interest her.
3. Alongside the weariness came feelings of emotional despondency:" I was dedesenchanted, disillusioned and hopeless."
4. If the media are to be believed,
5.apocalypsenoun
UK /əˈpɒk.ə.lɪps/
US /əˈpɑː.kə.lɪps/
[ S or U ] a very serious event resulting in great destruction andchange
eg:
The book offers a vision of the future in which there is a great nuclear apocalypse.
一个非常好的副词:obsessively——unable to stop thinking about something; too interested in orworried about something
6. Or are periods of lethargy and detachment as inevitable a part of human life as head colds and broken limbs?
lethargy: having little energy; feeling unwilling and unable to do anything
detachment: a group of soldiers who are separated from the maingroup in order to perform a particular duty:
7. There is no doubt that exhaustion is a pressing concern today
8. take extended sick leave
Sick leave (or paid sick days or sick pay) is time off from work that workers can use to stay home to address their health and safety needs without losing pay.
burnout is just a "luxury version" of depression for high-flying professionals
only losers become depressive. Burnout is a diagnosis for winners, or, more specifically, for former winners
depression entails a loss of self-confidence, or even self-hatred or self-contempt, which is not the case for burnout, where the image of the self often remains intact
our brains are simply ill evolved to deal with the mordern working environment
the emotional need to prove one's worth through one's job
With no chance to recharge our minds and bodies, our batteries are constantly running dangerously low
blood, yellow bile, black bile, phlegm
11. What changes through history are the cause and effects that are aligned with exhaustion.
If history has taught us anything, it is that there is no easy cur for this malaise.
malaise: a general feeling of being ill or having no energy, or anuncomfortable feeling that something is wrong, especially withsociety, and that you cannot change the situation
eg:
They claim it is a symptom of a deeper and more general malaise in society.
We were discussing the roots of the current economic malaise.
12. ride the peaks and throughs
draw boundaries between work and leisure
13. There is something very reassuring to learn that one is not alone in the way one feels, that others have felt the same——although in different circumstances.
You are not alnoe.
http://www.ximalaya.com/12887848/sound/34285874
文章就讲了现代人的这种exhaustion, llike a badly insulated wire, 原因是email and social media drain our reserves, 我觉得自己倒不是,平常根本不玩手机,只有在宿舍里看会微信文章(中英文),其他没wifi时就背下单词、读下英语、看会书(Think fasy and slow)
Fatigue and exhaustion may just be part of the human condition. 这句话我倒是挺认同的,而不是as a sign of spiritual weakness, 估计大部分原因还是因为这个:It mainly manifests in the anxiety of underperformance and a sense of not being good enough——of not living up to these expectations. (live up to不辜负)
二
George Saunders's Advice to Graduates:
Err on the side of kindness
链接:
http://www.wnyc.org/story/george-saunderss-advice-graduates/
Down through the ages
over the course of his life
In the interest of confidentiality
sensibly reservedly mildly (这三个词很棒)
prioritize our own needs over the needs of others
it starts out all rainbows and pupy dogs
You do well in high-school, in hopes of getting into a good college, so you can do well in the good cologe, in the hopes of getting a good job, so you can do well in the good job so you can...
Success is like a mountain that keeps growing ahead of you as you hike it
So be a good and proactive and even some what desperate patient on your own behalf
Travel, get rich, get famous, innovate, lead, fall in love, make and lose fortunes, swim naked in wild jungle rivers
The importance of better internal communications
链接:
http://www.economist.com/news/special-report/21720075-heavy-spending-infrastructure-helping-integrate-region-importance
1. promenade
a path for walking on, especially one built next to the sea:
eg:
We strolled along on the promenade eating ice creams.
2. white-elephant projects
something that has cost a lot of money but has no usefulpurpose
3. In an effort to make itself more attractive
4. furiously
in a very angry way:
eg:
"Get out of here!" she shouted furiously.
5. It has outgrown its command centre
outflow
outgas
outgoing
outgoings
outgrowth
outgun
outhouse
outing
an occasion when a company's shares are sold to the public for the first time

【Economist】United Airlines: Air rage
2017-04-15 englishmags
http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/yo5g-hkudft_7xnYy1RpWQ
1. Streaming services are undoing the cable business.
2. Travel search engines rank airlines based on price rather than friendliness or quality of service.
3. The airline might give you a bloody lip while kicking you from your seat, 1-start!
4. You only technological hope for better service is your smartphone camera and the viral pus hof social networks.
On Growing:7 Lessons
from the story of Wechat
链接:
http://blog.ycombinator.com/lessons-from-wechat/?from=groupmessage&isappinstalled=0

Original 2017-04-14 Anu Hariharan
http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/Aqarg2HtZOYu2VKgQWUmnQ
1.Xiaomi's MiTalk was the leader at the time with 5M registered users.
2.This move rose the tide on messaging users overall, pushing the number of registered users on the platform up to 50M by Novermber 2011, allowing Wechat to overtake Xiaomi's MiTalk as the leading messaging app in China.
3.The feature (Shake) served two purposes:
a) give people a way to engage when they’re new to the product,
and b) it had the side benefit of creating a take-notice element to WeChat in the offline world, very much like people on Pokemon Go.
4. ..... limited a user’s social network to a certain number of close friends and connections with strong ties. Instead of exactly replicating what Path did, WeChat understood that the true motivation behind this use case and drew a parallel with an old Chinese philosophy called “circle cultures,” meaning smaller circles are much stronger at the core and as the circles get bigger, the ties get weaker.
5. Where Twitter/Weibo were tools for businesses to broadcast and brand, WeChat (via OAs) became a channel for direct communication with customers.
6. However, WeChat was the first to create a marketplace for illustrators who can earn tip money via “rewards” from WeChat users who like their stickers. Users could choose to reward any amount up to RMB 200 ($25 USD).
7. Often they use the product in the middle of the night as a “single user” to pay attention to details and identify bugs early on.
8.This makes receiving a Red Packet in the presence of a group of people like a lottery combined with a fortune cookie – you have no idea how much money you will receive before you open the packet, and getting more than others can be a sign of good luck. This good luck implication also makes it a perfect game among close acquaintances at a party.
实质——luck
9.To minimize the impact on user experience, WeChat limited the number of native ads shown in a user’s WeChat Moments feed to one per day (compared with Facebook’s limit of one ad every ~10 posts in News Feed).
10. Vendors can also reward a user who redeemed a coupon by giving the user another coupon for use and sharing, thereby extending the exposure of their products and services.
Vendors:
someone who is sellingsomething
coupon:
a piece of paper that can be used to get something without payingfor it, or at a reduced price
11. While WeChat does have KPIs, these are typically shared only among department heads. The drumbeat-message engineers receive every day is “are you creating morevalue for the user?”
12. Wehat’s elevation of the QR code ..... is a label of abundant online information attached to the offline world”.
QR codes never took off in the U.S. for three key reasons:
(1) the #1 phone and the #1 social app didn’t allow you to scan QR codes.
(2) Because of this, people had to download dedicated scanner apps, and then the QR code would take them to a mobile website, which is arguably more cumbersome than simply typing in the URL or searching for the brand on social media.
(3) Early use cases focused on low-value, marketing related content and at times was merely spam.
13. While it is heartening to see users browsing the content on Moments, the team gets worried if they see too much time being spent on marketing content on Moments at any point in time because low quality content can distract users and reduce value long term.
14. To summarize, the WeChat team found ways to be scrappy, compete with their own products, built features that answered cultural needs and emphasized group interactions and most of all they have relentlessly focused on creating a simple tool that could extend into the hands of every mobile consumer. At this point, WeChat is not only an app — it is simply the internet. Which makes it easy to see why WeChat is becoming an inspiration to many hopeful startups.
