 规则7 

在独立分局之后用毛猴引导一系列具体事物、同位语、解释或起例证作用的引语。

冒号后内容和冒号前的分句是紧密相关的。

: 比 , 效果更强

: 的分隔作用比 ; 弱

: 比 —— 正式

冒号常跟在独立分句之后，且不能插在动词与其补足语或介词与其宾语之间。

错例：

Your dedicated whittler requires: a knife, a piece of wood and a back porch.

Understanding is that penetrating quality of knowledge that grows from: theory, practice, conviction, assertion, error and humiliation.

正例：

Your dedicated whittler requires three props: a knife, a piece of wood and a back porch.

如果两个独立分句中第二个分局阐释、详述了第一个分句的含义，则以冒号连接两句。

冒号也可引导用于补充前句的引文。

冒号还有一些形式功能：置于正式信函的称呼语后；表示时间是用于分隔小时和分钟；隔开书名和副标题；在《圣经》中分隔章名和节名。

用破折号表示突然的停顿或中断、引导较长的同位语或总结性语句。

破折号比逗号分隔作用强，但它不毛及冒号正式，也不如括号严谨。

The rear axle began to make a noise——a grinding, chattering, teeth-gritting rasp.

The increasing reluctance of the sun to rise, the extra nip in the breeze, the patter of shed leaves dropping——all the evidences of all drifting into winter were clearer each day.

只有在其他常用标点不足以满足需求时，才使用破折号。

错例：

Her father's suspicions proved well-dounded——it was not Edward she cared for——it was San Franciso.

Violence——the kind you see on television——is not honestly violent——there lies its harm.

正例：

Her father's suspicions proved well-dounded. It was not Edward she cared for, it was San Franciso.

 规则9 

主语的单复数决定谓语动词的单复数。

插在主语和谓语间的其他成分不影响谓语动词的单复数。

在关系从句中，one of.....或类似的表达之后使用谓语的单数形式是一个很常见的错误。

错例：

One of the ablest scientists who has attacked this problem....

One of those people who is never ready on time....

正例：

One of the ablest scientists who have attacked this problem....

One of those people who are never ready on time....

each, either, everyone, everybody, neither, nobody, someone后接单数形式动词作谓语。

none表示 没有一个 或 一个都不 时，谓语单数；

none指代一个以上的人或物时，谓语复数。

and 练接的两个及以上主语名词搭配复数动词，但某些复合主语，尤其是惯用语，由each或every修饰的，为不可分割的整体，谓语单数。

The long and the short is ....

Bread and butter was all she served.

Given and take is essential to a happy household.

Every window, picture and mirror was smashed.

单数主语与其他名词通过with, as well as, in addition to, except, together with, no less than 相连，谓语单数。

有些名词形式是复数，但意义为单数，需搭配单数动词，此类需慢慢积累。

特例： the contents of a pottery

这里需要分情况：罐子里是装的是果酱？单数。玻璃弹子？复数。

学校里处处是景，每逢花开，油菜、樱花、桃花、紫荆、白玉兰、牡丹、玫瑰.......花瓣散落满地，有时候树下一地的碎片，美腻。

一年四季这里都是景，雾、雪、花、水、人。

年年岁岁花相似

岁岁年年人不识
